Blanco Brown, “Nobody’s More Country” [📷: TrailerTrapMusic / BMG Rights Management]On “Nobody’s More Country,” Blanco Brown continues to attempt an eclectic, crossover brand of country music that falls way short.

Clichés and platitudes can be incredibly annoying.  Honestly, they can irk the heck out of you, particularly when attached to music.  Country and rap are notoriously known for clichés and platitudes, often the things I criticize artists within the genres for.  🎙 Blanco Brown, is a mix between country, hip-hop, pop – a little bit of everything.  That said, he falls under the umbrella of country music, in a more contemporary, experimental vein.  Experiments within country music can go horribly wrong and, coupled with those clichés and platitudes, lead to nothing short of a hot mess.  On his new single 🎵 “Nobody’s More Country”, early on, I found myself rolling my eyes as Brown’s attempt at an eclectic, crossover brand of country music falls way short.

To be fair, Blanco Brown has every right to perform the music he desires and be the artist he wants to be – he should be true to self.  Personally, however, I have a tough time buying what he’s selling and no, it has nothing to do with the fact that he is a black male country artist.   The problem is the material and maybe, properly selling his artistic identity. Specifically, on “Nobody’s More Country,” the twang is way over the top, the lyrics are generic (and cliché), and the music tries to be everything to everybody.  The result is, hence, a song by an artist that is simultaneously doing too much and not enough at the same time.  I’m sick and tired of hearing the things that Brown sings about here because I feel like it’s nothing more than rinse and repeat.  And to be clear, that problem goes beyond Brown himself – he’s not solely to blame. To make matters worse, you add hip-hop drum programming and try to add ‘swagger’ to this contemporary country record.  Yikes, yikes, and again, I say, YIKES!

Final Thoughts 💭

No, I’m not a fan of “Nobody’s More Country,” period.  Also, worth noting, NO, I wasn’t a fan of 🎵 “The Git Up”.  Still, I see more redeeming value in “The Git Up” compared to “Nobody’s More Country.” I see what Blanco Brown is trying to do, and I’m aware of various country-rap fusion acts (remember 🎙 Cowboy Troy years back), but the results aren’t cutting it in my opinion.  It just doesn’t hit for me.  Maybe others dig it, but as for me, it’s a resounding NO.
