“Caribbean Queen / Now we’re sharing the same dream / And our hearts they beat as one / No more love on the run.”
Aww, the feels, the feels, the feels! Grammy-winning Trinidadian British singer-songwriter Billy Ocean (Leslie Sebastian Charles, b. 1950) concocted a big-time hit with “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run). “Caribbean Queen” is the opener from his 1984 double-platinum album, Suddenly. Not only was the album certified by the Recording Industry Association of America, but “Caribbean Queen” was certified gold.  It became the first of three number-one hits by Ocean, which is quite impressive. Also, it won Ocean the sole Grammy of his career for Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards. Ocean and producer Keith Diamond (1950 – 1997) composed this unforgettable ‘80s classic.

“Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” leaves no doubt in anybody’s mind that this lady is special! In the centerpiece, the chorus, excerpted earlier, Billy Ocean has established that he’s found his person – “no more love on the run!” Before that, he sets up how this love came about.  In the first verse, her painted jeans enticed him so much so that “In the blink of an eye I knew her number and her name.”  Billy had some game… I wish I could say the same… Anyway, in the second verse, he continues to be taken, asserting, “Electric eyes that you can’t ignore / And passion burns you like never before.”  He admits he had fun in mind, but ultimately, fell in L-O-V-E.  A lengthy track – nearly eight minutes in its standard version versus eight-and-a-quarter with the extended mix – it’s well worth the time.  Sublimely produced, the ‘80s cues are abundant, from vibrant keys and synths to crisp rhythmic guitars, a robust bass line, and an electrifying groove.  For bonus ear candy, what about those strings and that saxophone? Of course, the cherry on top is Billy Ocean, who wows with this ripe, expressive tenor.  Every note he sings sounds jubilant.  It’s incredibly easy to buy what he’s selling.  Of course, the songwriting is memorable, as mentioned earlier, and the track is melodious from start to finish. “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)is the sugar, honey, iced tea. The music speaks for itself – volumes, baby!
