Billy Gilman, One Voice | 1 Hit WONDERful

In the 32^nd edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we highlight “One Voice” by Grammy-nominated country singer Billy Gilman.

It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 32^nd edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “One Voice”, the one-hit wonder by Billy Gilman.

Everyone loves a cute kid with an amazing voice, right? Right! Billy Gilman had just turned 12 years old when “One Voice” was released as a single at the end of May 2000. “One Voice” is the fourth track on his double-platinum debut album of the same name. Gilman charted only two songs on the pop chart, both of which hail from One Voice. Only “One Voice” reached the top 40, and barely; it peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, Gilman was nominated for a Grammy: Best Male Country Vocal Performance. “One Voice” was written by Don Cook and David Malloy. Blake Chancey and Cook produced it.

“One Voice” was the perfect single for Billy Gilman. Clearly, he wasn’t your average 12-year-old. His voice is boyish, as to be expected, but it’s also clear, pure, expressive, and ripe. The first note you hear Gilman sing, the potential is through the roof. Gilman masterfully brings the tuneful melodies to life and sounds much more musically advanced despite being a pre-teen.  This is a big ballad, but Billy was up to the task.  The songwriters did a nice job of keeping his age in mind: “A house, a yard, a neighborhood / Where you can ride your new bike to school.” But, thematically, it’s also ambitious. In the third and final verse, Billy asserts, “Yesterday, while walking home / I saw some kid on Newberry Road / He pulled a pistol from his bag / And tossed it in the river below.” Hmm, thought-provoking. On the bridge, Gilman is incredibly positive, encouraging us by saying, “One dream can change the world.” Amen! The chorus, varied with each iteration, is the crème de la crème. The final chorus plays out a little something like this:

“Thanks for the help

Down here on earth

A thousand prayers, a million words

But one voice was heard

One voice was heard

One voice was heard.”

Accompanied by a gorgeous instrumental, including lush, soaring strings, “One Voice” is simply divine.  Would a 12-year-old record a song like this in the 2020s? Honestly, probably not.  But there is something special about the innocence captured, as well as hoping, petitioning, and praying for a better, more equitable world. While Gilman wouldn’t become a superstar, he left his mark with this ballad.
