Beyoncé, MORNING DEW (DONK) | Song Review

Versatile pop superstar Beyoncé shines once more on her ultra-chill, sexy, and soulful single, “MORNING DEW (DONK).”

Ooh-la-la, Beyoncé! Can the versatile pop superstar do any wrong? No, and that was rhetorical, by the way! Ahead of the 20^th anniversary of her blockbuster sophomore album B’Day, Bey gave us a sultry, soulful bop with “MORNING DEW (DONK)”. Beyoncé wrote “MORNING DEW (DONK)” with The-Dream, DIXSON, Pharrell Williams, Cheeky Blakk, Ari Lennox, and Ant Clemons. She produced it with The-Dream, DIXSON, and Pharrell Williams.

“MORNING DEW (DONK)” has lots to love… and lots of love. It begins with the warm production: strings, rhythmic guitar, and a jazzy, soulful groove.  The vibes are S-E-X-Y. Of course, the star of the show is our superstar, Beyoncé, who brings it with her nuanced, sweet, and rhythmic vocals. Beyond the melody, Bey impresses with her ad-libs – those vocal runs are the sugar, honey, iced tea.  “MORNING DEW (DONK)” has its repetitive moments, but not one “donkey” needs to be shortchanged in the pre-chorus or chorus.  But before that, there are intriguing lyrics in the verses, too.  The tone is set we “As we sip champagne, watchin’ Purple Rain,” with Yoncé adding, “So give me that ‘A’ in biology; I’m graduatin’ soon (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’).” Damn, girl! The second verse compels too: “There’s a river inside that flows from our love / You can tap in but don’t, don’t tap out, oh / It’s a slip in the slide, that front to back love / Right there, baby, don’t tap out, tap out.” Damn, it got H-O-T! The chorus is the crème de la crème, of course:

“Girl, you sexy in the mornin’

You know you turn me on, babe

You know the sun rise for you (For you)

Give me that mornin’ dew (Mornin’ dew).”

Want more notes regarding the gem that is “MORNING DEW (DONK)”? Well, the vocal arrangement is delightful.  Those harmonies cook.  The clapping moments are also rad.  Musically, the key modulations are expertly navigated in a more surprising, less predictable fashion.  Once again, Beyoncé makes our ears perk up.
