Benson Boone, The Time Of My Life | Song Review

Often shirtless, ‘flipping’ pop singer-songwriter Benson Boone returns with a pleasant, well-rounded ballad, “The Time of My Life.”

Looking at Benson Boone is easy, particularly sans shirt. See the cover of “The Time Of My Life”, and once more, Boone gives us undeniable eye candy. He’s handsome – can’t deny that!  Should I be starting a review talking about him being shirtless? Well, he’s shirtless a lot… Listening to him sing is more divisive for some. Sometimes, it’s not the voice but rather what he’s singing…  The ripped pop singer-songwriter has a better voice than he’s given credit for, truthfully, even if, say, “Beautiful Things” is grating.  Boone is back with “The Time Of My Life”, a single where he has hit it big (fame) yet she didn’t come along.  In the centerpiece, the chorus, he sings, “‘Cause now that every day’s a party / Every night’s a nightmare / I can’t lay down my head / Without wishing you came along.” Word.  “The Time Of My Life” was written by Boone, Jack LaFrantz, Jason Evigan, and Tunch Burns. Jason Evigan also produced it.

“The Time Of My Life” is what Benson Boone does best: balladry.  The singing is lovely.  He begins singing sincerely and tenderly.  It’s easy to buy what he’s selling, which is a big win.  A melodious song, the tunefulness also bodes well.  Revisiting the theme mentioned earlier, “Yes, I’m having the time of my life / But something about it feels off / I wish you came along.” Within the final minute, specifically the bridge, we get that Benson BOOM where he shows off his high-powered upper register, belting like a champ.  “And I’ll be standing here like a stone,” he sings, and adds, “Waves are crashing down, years are passing /… I will never let myself move on.” Also amplifying the final minute are background vocals and a wall of sound.  So, how does “The Time of My Life” stack up? It is pleasant, all in all.  Is it the most exciting or memorable song ever? Not in my humble opinion, but Boone gives us some great moments.  Respectable.  And he’s shirtless on the cover art…
