Grammy-nominated pop singer-songwriter sombr releases one of his most vulnerable songs yet with “My Body Isn’t Ready.”
“My Body Isn’t Ready” shines from the beginning. The intro is beautiful, enigmatic, and striking. “MBIR” features fantastic production, including guitar strumming and warm piano. The record is melodious throughout. There are tuneful melodies during the verses and especially the chorus. Of course, it’s not just the melodies that eat but the text, too. “And now I’m out of school,” sombr sings in the second verse, and continues, “And I met someone new / Does she like me for the things I do?” Perhaps those aren’t the deepest lyrics ever penned, but his insecurity is captured, which is the point of the song. The chorus, the crème de la crème, lays it out there:
“I like you, but my body isn’t ready
I want you, but the mirror won’t let me
I try to be the person you’re expecting
But I’m not ready, I’m not ready.”
Throughout, sombr delivers stellar vocals. I particularly love the sweetness of his falsetto moments. His vulnerability, relatable to the nth degree, takes the cake during the chorus. Later, the bridge does a fine job of differentiating itself from the verses and chorus. Still, it relates: “If I could crawl out of my own skin, would you let me in? / If we could just be those kids again, maybe I could swim.” All told, sombr delivers one of his better songs with “My Body Isn’t Ready”. There’ll be memes and jokes made, but, personally, I’m on board.
