Indie-rock singer-songwriter beabadoobee thrills on the distorted “Switchblade,” the second single from her fourth album, Pylon.
“Switchblade” commences with ear-catching distorted guitar and sound effects – ROCK ON! There is no way you can’t describe the record as colorful. Beyond those gritty sounds, “Switchblade” is anchored by a distinct groove. As for beabadoobee, she never gets too high or too low. She sings the rhythmic melodic lines in an undertone. “Feeling worn thin, can I learn to trust again?” she sings in the second verse and concludes, “Growing old just seems to break everythin’ that we mend / Hold my lighter, courage flicker, burn and fade.” She packs a punch, undertone or not, including a timely f-bomb: “Growing up just means to fuck everything up again / Take my switchblade, self-defense is to be brave.” Word. The chorus is special:
“Either seether with this anger?
Can’t control this fever
That just takes it out of me
Takes it out of me.”
All told, the distorted, sometimes glitchy “Switchblade” is thrilling. Beabadoobee ensures that there is never a dull moment!
