GrammySo, how did the 60th Grammy Awards nominations stack up? Check out our reactions, including those who were snubbed.

On November 28, 2017, the nominees/nominations were announced for the 60th Grammy Awards.  The nominations as a whole represented relevancy, a step that the Recording Academy has been easing into over the last couple of years in particular.  Notably, there’s great diversity in the nominees, with few left-field surprises.  Arguably, this is the best crop of nominations yet because it matches the current musical climate, for better or for worse.  Here are The Musical Hype reactions to the nominations in specific fields and categories including pop, rock, R&B, rap, and country.

Pop

Best Pop Solo Performance

Ed Sheeran, ÷ © Atlantic“Love So Soft” (Kelly Clarkson)

“Praying” (Kesha)

“Million Reasons” (Lady Gaga)

“What About Us” (P!nk)

“Shape Of You” (Ed Sheeran)

Notable Snubs: “Sign of the Times” (Harry Styles)

Reaction: Ed Sheeran is the sole male pop artist to get a nod here.  Furthermore, he has tough competition, despite the ubiquity that is “Shape of You.” This is a well-assembled category, with the only snub arguably being “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles.  Even so, who would you bump out in favor of “Sign of the Times?”

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

“Something Just Like This” (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay)

“Despacito” (Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber)

“Thunder” (Imagine Dragons)

“Feel It Still (Portugal. The Man)

“Stay” (Zedd & Alessia Cara)

Notable Snubs: None

Reaction: This category is fine – nothing particularly objectionable.

Best Pop Vocal Album

Lana Del Rey, Lust for Life © InterscopeKaleidoscope EP (Coldplay)

Lust for Life (Lana Del Rey)

Evolve (Imagine Dragons)

Rainbow (Kesha)

Joanne (Lady Gaga)

÷ (Divide) (Ed Sheeran)

Notable Snubs: Harry Styles (Harry Styles)

Reaction: There are a few issues with this category. An earlier nod for Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder” isn’t objectionable, but for the album Evolve as a whole? Meh – there are better choices.  The Coldplay EP Kaleidoscope was enjoyable, but was it worth nominating for a Grammy for Pop Vocal album? No way. If I were Harry Styles, this might be the category that makes me angriest.
