1986 – 2026: 40 Songs for 40 Years features songs by Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Hozier, Mariah Carey, The Weeknd, and Whitney Houston.

The year 1986 is a very special for ya boi.  Why? That is the year I was born, specifically on September 2.  I’m a Virgo ♍️ through and through, though I don’t follow astrology consistently.  To celebrate my big 40^th birthday, I thought, what better way than to do what I enjoy – music and writing.  So, I decided to compile a playlist of songs from every year of my life, hence 1986 – 2026: 40 Songs for 40 Years. Because this is a big list, even though you’re seeing the finished product for the first time on my 40^th birthday, this list was in the works and completed well in advance.  The idea was to pick songs I liked or connected with, including some considered the best of the year they were released.  And believe me, there were times I went back and forth, including some over others, because only one song per year.  Are there a few slight exceptions? Yes, but for the most part, the list features songs from 1986 to 2026. FYI, the same artists could be included as many times as I saw fit – it’s my birthday, after all! 1986 – 2026: 40 Songs for 40 Years features songs by Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Hozier, Mariah Carey, The Weeknd, and Whitney Houston. So, without further ado, first and foremost, happy birthday to me, and let’s begin where it all started in 1986!

1. Patti LaBelle &  Michael McDonald, “On My Own”

Winner In You » MCA Records Inc. » 1986

 Patti LaBelle (b. 1944) experienced a resurgence of sorts in 1986.  She’d had plenty of success before this, with LaBelle (“Lady Marmalade”) and as a solo artist (“If Only You Knew”).  Even so, “Own My Own” gave the R&B veteran a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. This gorgeous, lush duet between two awesome, distinct, and powerful voices – Michael McDonald (b. 1952) is the man – propelled her only platinum-certified album, Winner in You, to number one on the Billboard 200.  Notably, “On My Own” was certified gold.

Not only does “On My Own” feature two legendary musicians, but it’s also written and produced by a legendary team: Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager.  The form features standard sections (verse, chorus, bridge) but isn’t written ‘predictably’ either.  LaBelle sings the first verse expressively while also showing tremendous control. She follows with an abbreviation of the chorus, essentially. As for McDonald, he matches her in the second verse, also singing with great expression, followed by the full-fledged chorus: “On my own / Once again, now / One more time / By myself.”  They then sing collaboratively on the bridge, followed by a Patti chorus, another McDonald verse, and the most powerful chorus yet, performed jointly.  LaBelle and McDonald let loose in that extended closing chorus, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

2. Whitney Houston, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”

Woo, that’s #ICONIC!!! She just wants to dance and be in love with someone, sigh (understandable and relatable). Despite living just 48 years 😭, the musical legacy of Whitney Houston (1963 – 2012) endures, given a catalog filled with hits, including the beloved “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”.  “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” written by Shannon Rubicam and George Merrill, graces Houston’s sophomore album, Whitney, released in 1987.  Spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is one of 11 number-one hits and 23 top-10 hits by Houston.  

It goes without saying that “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” is an incredibly fun and infectious listen.  It is up-tempo, and the minute the song begins playing, it is instantly recognizable.  One of the quintessential numbers of the 1980s, it never loses its luster beyond the decade, which is a testament to its legendary, classic status. As excerpted, the chorus is the centerpiece – the crème de la crème.  Houston shows off her immense musicianship, singing with ample energy, showing off an incredible personality, and most of all, wowing with THE VOICE.  Beyond the elite singing and the chorus, the verses and the pre-choruses are memorable too, setting up that magnificent chorus. In the second verse, she asserts, “I’ve been in love and lost to my senses / Spinnin’ through the town / Sooner or later, the fever ends / And I wind up feelin’ down.” Again, relatable – who doesn’t want to find love to rid themselves of loneliness? The sound is also marvelous, featuring arranging and production by the great Narada Michael Walden.  All told, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” speaks for itself – a true pop classic. Honestly, “Don’t you wanna dance? Say you wanna dance…” C’mon, baby!

3. George Michael, “One More Try”

Faith » Sony » 1987

The timeless “One More Try” was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from Faith, the biggest album of George Michael’s career, which ultimately won the Grammy for Album Of The Year at the 31^st Annual Grammy Awards. Had Michael never released another album, Faith would have been enough to cement his legacy. “Now I think it’s time / That you let me know / So, if you love me / Say you love me / But if you don’t / Just let me go.” “One More Try,” an utterly sublime ballad, plays to his strengths, allowing him to flaunt his gorgeous tone.  

Running nearly six minutes long, Michael milks “One More Try” for all it’s worth, and who can blame him! Even better than Michael’s ravishing good looks was his marvelous instrument.  Regarding production, “One More Try” is firmly planted in the 80s. The backdrop, fueled by electric keyboard (the patch, pads, and synths) sounds little like the music of the aughts and beyond.  Despite lacking flashiness or pizzazz, the sound feels right. Beyond the vocals, shout out Michael’s songwriting skills. The result is a personal, authentic song that shines thanks to simplicity and sheer artistry.  The chorus is the centerpiece, thriving off love and heartbreak:   

“And teacher  

There are things that I still have to learn  

But the one thing I have is my pride  

Oh, so I don’t want to learn to  

Hold you, touch you  

Think that you’re mine  

Because there ain’t no joy  

For an uptown boy  

Who just isn’t willin’ to try.” 

All told, “One More Try” is a classic that remains potent nearly 40 years later.  Notably, the ballad has been covered multiple times, including by Mariah Carey and Divine.

4. Phil Collins, “I Wish It Would Rain Down”

Highly decorated musician extraordinaire Phil Collins (b. 1951) delivered another big-time pop hit with “I Wish It Would Rain Down”.  The track hails from his Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum, 1989 album, …But Seriously. “Another Day In Paradise” earned …But Serious its sole Grammy, but it was a big one – Record of the Year! But this isn’t about paradise but rather rain! “I Wish It Would Rain Down” was nominated for no Grammys, but it was one of 14 top 10 pop hits for Collins. It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990.

So, what makes “I Wish It Would Rain Down” such a special Phil Collins song? Phil Collins, first and foremost.  He delivers one of the best performances of his illustrious career. In the verses, he sounds sweet and nuanced, supported by fabulous vocal production. As the song progresses, from the second chorus and beyond, including the bridge, Collins shows off the sheer power and versatility of his instrument.  His performance is impressive to the nth degree.  Upping the ante vocally as well is the inclusion of a gospel choir, beginning during the second chorus. Instrumentally, “Rain” is beastly from the get-go.  Bright and dynamic, Eric Clapton provides a serious lift with his electric guitar playing.  Other instruments that stand out are the keyboards (Collins) and the bass (Pino Palladino). The sound is firmly planted in that late 1980s, early 1990s adult contemporary aesthetic. The songwriting can’t be neglected either.  “You know I never meant to see you again,” Collins sings in the first verse, continuing, “But I only passed by as a friend, yeah.” In the second verse, he informs her, “Ooh, I never mean to cause you no pain / But it looks like I did it again, yeah.” Oh, snap! The melodies are tuneful in the verses, as well as that precipitation-filled chorus! Shout out the bridge, where the contrast melodically and melodically keeps “I Wish It Would Rain Down” engaging to the nth degree. “But I know in my heart of hearts / I know I’m never gonna hold you again, no, no,” he asserts.  Adding to the excellence of the timeless “I Wish It Would Rain Down” is the high-flying outro, where Phil and the choir continue to implore rain.

5. Mariah Carey, “Vision of Love”

Those memorable lyrics hail from the iconic Mariah Carey record, “Vision of Love”. Carey continues, “It took so long / Still I believed / Somehow the one that I needed / Would find me eventually.” Sigh! “Vision of Love” appears on the Grammy winner’s 1990 debut album, Mariah Carey. It’s a marvelous opening statement, setting the tone for a truly illustrious career.  Furthermore, “Vision of Love” spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, one of Mimi’s 19 (!) number ones.

The brilliant “Vision of Love” was written by Carey and Ben Margulies.  The record finds Carey singing about an infatuated heart that is ultimately fulfilled.  “I’m so thankful that I’ve received / The answer that heaven / Has sent down to me,” she proclaims.  Woo, that’s deep Mariah! Also, divinely romantic! Carey sings angelically, flaunting her anointed pipes.  Her tone! Those runs! The famous whistle tones! Producing this utterly sublime, big-voiced, high-flying ballad are Rhett Lawrence and Narada Michael Walden.  Given the time (again, 1990), “Vision of Love” sounds slick. Approaching four decades since its release, “Vision of Love” remains a crown jewel.  This is one of the best songs in the Mariah Carey catalog, period. R&B doesn’t sound like this anymore, mind you, but still, the moment this record comes on, it’s instantly recognizable.  It totally feels right, particularly given those love-driven vibes!

6. C+C Music Factory, “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”

Three words: “EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!” WOO! That is all you need to know!  Even three decades after “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” arrived, those repeated lyrics remain iconic – instantly recognizable. C+C Music Factory had a gargantuan dance smash on their hands with this groovy AF, no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Besides the multiplatinum single, the 1990 album, Gonna Make You Sweat, was also certified multiplatinum.

Rapper Freedom Williams is credited as a featured guest on “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).”  He should be, as his two verses are an integral part of the record beyond the memorable, titular lyrics (“And I’m here to combine / Beats and lyrics to make you shake your pants”). Perhaps more memorable from Freedom: “It’s your world, and I’m just a squirrel / Tryin’ to get a nut to move your butt.” Gah-day-ummm – a nut, huh? However, one of the biggest stories with the record is the robust sung vocals, which went uncredited – an absolute travesty. “Come on, let’s sweat, baby,” Martha Wash (NOT Zelma Davis) sings in the chorus, continuing, “Let the music take control / Let the rhythm move you / Sweat, sweat.” Yes ma’am! Wash is responsible for the best parts of the song yet didn’t receive her just due.  Why? She didn’t look the part. Ain’t that some 💩? Regardless, “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”, one of the best and biggest club-, dance-, and gay anthems, wouldn’t be anything without Wash’s epic pipes fueling the fire.  More could be said, but this dance joint speaks for itself.  It’s been kicking a$$ and taking names since 1990 – NO 🚫 CAP🧢!

7. Boyz II Men, “End of the Road”

Boyz II Men ranks among the best male groups of all time – it’s not debatable!  The collective owned contemporary R&B in 1991, period.  Heck, they even went on to have continued success through the late 90s 💪.  Their voices – those soaring, soulful harmonies – are truly God-sent.  Even if you don’t believe in God, you can believe in Boyz II Men.  During their run, they had numerous gems, though the Cooleyhighharmony slow jam “End of the Road” ranks at the top of their illustrious collection.

What makes “End of the Road” special? Besides the vocals, which are automatic, the songwriting is on point.  Thank the team comprised of  Daryl Simmons, Antonio “LA” Reid, and Babyface.  With those juggernauts, is there any way that Michael McCary, Shawn Stockman, Wanyá Morris, and Nathan Morris could miss? NO 👏 POSSIBLE 👏 WAY 👏! With love, specifically heartbreak, being the topic, “End of the Road” is relatable through and through.  Those ‘Boyz’ are struggling with the end, still desiring to be with their respective ex-lovers.  In the pre-chorus, Wanya asks, “Will you love me again like you loved me before? / This time, I want you to love me much more / This time instead, just come to my bed / And baby, just don’t let me, don’t let me down.” Ultimately, “End of the Road” is a once-in-a-lifetime song, PERIOD. The vocals are high-flying, and the harmonies are celestial. The Grammys took notice, awarding the R&B group Best R&B Performance by a Duo/Group with Vocal in 1992 for this transcendent gem. Furthermore, this 13-week, number-one Billboard Hot 100 hit also won a Grammy for Best R&B Song, awarded to Simmons, Reid, and Babyface. Approaching four decades later, “End of the Road” remains potent.

8. Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You”

Sorry to every other R&B artist who released music in 1992.  Why? Well, the best R&B song of that year belongs to one woman and one woman only. Pretty amazing how Whitney Houston totally transformed “I Will Always Love You,” a country song written by Dolly Parton, isn’t it?  There’s not much commentary needed for this highlight from The Bodyguard – Original Soundtrack Album – it speaks for itself.  This is the greatest of Houston’s many, many hits.  At her best, who could outperform her?  The best moment is the modulation (key change), where Houston takes things to a whole different level. “And I will always love you / I will always love you.” No matter who sings this masterpiece in the future, there will only ever be one definitive, truly iconic version.

9. Seal, “Kiss From a Rose”

British singer/songwriter Seal scored big with “Kiss from a Rose,” a ‘once in a lifetime’ pop song. The song to beat from his 1994 multiplatinum album, Seal,  marks the most successful moment in his career.  The gold-certified single spent one week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.  It earned three Grammys: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Seal composed the ‘90s classic. “Kiss” is elite thanks to top-notch musicianship. Selling points include a unique harmonic progression, a sublime, wide-ranging vocal performance, and a brilliant arrangement, orchestration, and production (Trevor Horn produced).  The songwriting is stunning, accentuated by Seal’s magnificent vocals.  The chorus is the crowning achievement:

“Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah

And now that your rose is in bloom

A light hits the gloom on the gray.”

Beyond the chorus, the verses have no shortage of lyrical highlights.  “There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea,” he sings quietly but expressively in the first verse, continuing, “You became the light of the dark side of me.” In the second, Seal asserts, “To me, you’re like a growing addiction that I can’t deny / Won’t you tell me is that healthy, baby?” More than three decades old, “Kiss from a Rose” is timeless.

10. Coolio, “Gangsta’s Paradise” (Ft. L.V.)

The late, great Coolio (Artis Leon Ivey, Jr.) was an integral part of hip-hop/rap in the 1990s, with his biggest hit being the number-one, Grammy-winning single, “Gangsta’s Paradise”. “Gangsta’s Paradise” famously appeared in the film and soundtrack for Dangerous Minds and reappeared on his 1995 album, Gangsta’s Paradise. L.V. sang the chorus, which interpolates a 1970s Stevie Wonder joint, “Pastime Paradise”. Per Rolling Stone, getting Wonder to sign off on the use of “Pastime Paradise” was no easy feat.  After Coolio’s wife stepped in and convinced Wonder’s brother to meet with Coolio, and Coolio agreed to remove profanity and give Wonder writing credit (which yielded ample profit for him), it was cleared.

With a timeless chorus and epic production, the last and most important piece of the puzzle is Coolio.  He slays in his rhymes with an ultra-compelling flow.  Following the intro, Coolio famously raps, “As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death / I take a look at my life and realize there’s nothin’ left.” From there, “It’s on like Donkey Kong” for Coolio. “But I ain’t never crossed a man that didn’t deserve it / Me be treated like a punk, you know that’s unheard of,” he spits, continuing, “You better watch how you talkin’ and where you walkin’ / Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk.” Oh, snap! In the second, there’s the gem, “I’m 23 now, but will I live to see 24? / The way things is goin’, I don’t know.” There’s also the third verse, where Coolio rhymes, “They say I gotta learn, but nobody’s here to teach me / If they can’t understand it, how can they reach me?” He has a day-um point! Finally, can’t neglect to mention the refrain, which sometimes prefaces the chorus and concludes the record: “Tell me why are we, so blind to see / That the ones we hurt are you and me?” “Gangsta’s Paradise” is the type of classic record you could write an entire book about and still wouldn’t have completely analyzed it.  It’s the definition of timeless.

11. Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day”

“One Sweet Day” was not only the best R&B song from 1995, but arguably, it was the best song of the year regardless of genre. Mariah Carey (b. 1969) and Boyz II Men – Shawn Stockman (b. 1972), Wanyá Morris (b. 1973), Nathan Morris (b. 1971), and formerly, Michael McCary (b. 1971) – on the same song? Yes, please! That’s legendary star power to the nth degree – a formidable team to say the least, given the musicianship and sheer number of hits.  Carey, Boyz II Men, and Walter Afanasieff (b. 1958) wrote and produced it. “One Sweet Day” spent an impressive 16 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995-96.  It was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2023. Despite being a catalyst for shedding tears, “One Sweet Day” is uplifting thanks to the celestial, unforgettable chorus:

“And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven

Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way

And I know eventually we’ll be together

One sweet day.”

Shockingly, “One Sweet Day” won no Grammys but was nominated for Record Of The Year. Ultimately, it lost to another classic: “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal.

Kelly (Robert Kelly) is as controversial and embattled as they come. It is difficult to buy what the three-time Grammy winner is selling, given his issues with SEX.  Even as Kelly is ‘muted’ given his countless sins, one particular record remains timeless and unforgettable: “I Believe I Can Fly.” The least problematic hit in his discography, R. Kelly can thank the uplifting gospel-tinged R&B number for his Grammys.  Also, if there’s any way the musician can save some face, it’s through this unifying anthem. The lyrics feel incredibly authentic and sincere, coupled with Kelly’s smooth vocals and, eventually, his dizzying runs.  In addition to the pre-chorus above, the chorus is simply perfect, giving you chills every time it’s performed:  

“I believe I can fly 
I believe I can touch the sky 
I think about it every night and day 
Spread my wings and fly away 
I believe I can soar 
I see me running through that open door 
I believe I can fly.”  

Of course, the spirit hits with the backing choral vocals during the “I can fly” part, with Kells riffing.  For most of his career, Robert has embraced full-on salacious mode, but back in the tail end of ’96 and throughout ’97, he delivered a sincere, ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ gem.

13. Lauryn Hill, “Ex-Factor”

 Oh, snap! Grammy-winning hip-hop/R&B singer/songwriter Lauryn Hill captivated us with the soulful “Ex-Factor” from her 1998 masterpiece, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. “Tell me, who I have to be / To get some reciprocity.” Reciprocity, huh? Not a common lyric, which is part of the sheer brilliance! Those timeless lyrics hail from one of the truly great classics about exes. Pushing three decades since its release, “Ex-Factor” and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill carry ample weight.  The backdrop of “Ex-Factor” is fueled by a 1993 Wu-Tang Clan sample, “Can It Be All So Simple”. Considering the sample, in addition to Hill, there are multiple songwriters: Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, and U-God. Hill produced it.

“Ex-Factor” is a prime example of the plight of love, as well as how potent songs incorporating breakups can truly be. At one point, Hill sings, “And when I try to walk away / You’d hurt yourself to make me stay / This is crazy.” Crazy indeed, Ms. Lauryn Hill, but, again, exes and broken-off relationships are among the preeminent topics in music regardless of genre.  Throughout, Hill’s voice is magnificent. She oozes with soul and sings authentically and sincerely. You can feel her struggle with love.  Arguably, the best section of this 90s classic is the ‘breakdown’:

“(Care) Care for me, care for me

I know you care for me

(There) There for me, there for me

Said you’d be there for me

(Cry) Cry for me, cry for me

You said you’d die for me

(Give) Give to me, give to me

Why won’t you live for me?”

Delivering a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ song and performance, could anyone even challenge Ms. Hill for the crown regarding “Ex-Factor”?

14. Macy Gray, “I Try”

Macy Gray carved out her place in music history with one big hit, “I Try”. “I Try” appears as the fourth track on her 1999, multiplatinum debut album, On How Life Is.  While the record qualifies as a 1990s song, it first charted as a single in 2000.  “I Try” would chart for 27 weeks and peak at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Another accolade earned by this joint, which has become a pop culture gem, was a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, beating out a Britney Spears classic (“Oops!…I Did It Again”).  Notably, it was also nominated for Grammys for Record and Song of the Year.

So, what made “I Try” such a big deal? Regarding sound, this record is a fine blend of pop and neo-soul – the best of both worlds.  The production work (Andrew Slater) is superb, with the rich sounds of keyboard, organ, guitars and strings. Something else that makes “I Try” endearing is the distinct voice of Macy Gray, who truly is one of a kind.  Her instrument is incredibly raspy, but also quite expressive. The best moment of the song – the crowning achievement – is the chorus, DUH!

“I try to say goodbye and I choke

I try to walk away, and I stumble

Though I try to hide it, it’s clear

My world crumbles when you are not near.”

Beyond the chorus, the songwriting – Gray, Jinsoo Lim, Jeremy Ruzumna, and David Wilder – is enjoyable and well-rounded.  Musically, another triumphant moment for this one-hit wonder is the key change. While Gray doesn’t have a voice characterized by a wide range, she shines on the ad-libs, singing in all her ultra-distinctive glory. All told, “I Try” exemplifies one-hit wonderfulness!

15. Britney Spears, “Oops!… I Did It Again”

Britney Spears has plenty of hits, but few are more beloved or iconic than “Oops!… I Did It Again.” “Oops!” is the title track – the main attraction on her 2000 album, Oops!… I Did It Again.  The song was nominated for a Grammy, losing to one-hit wonder Macy Gray (“I Try”). Unsurprisingly, it was one of 14 top 10 hits for Spears.  Perhaps more surprising is that “Oops!” didn’t peak higher than number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The production by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub is on point. The lyrics (Martin and Yacoub as well) are catchy AF. “I think I did it again / I made you believe we’re more than just friends,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “Oh, baby, it might seem like a crush / But it doesn’t mean that I’m serious.”  Even though Spears isn’t a powerhouse vocalist, she sounds great here – it’s giving #ICONIC! The centerpiece, the crème de la crème, is none other than the catchy, tuneful, and unforgettable chorus.

“Oops, I did it again

I played with your heart

Got lost in the game

Oh, baby, baby

Oops, you think I’m in love

That I’m sent from above

I’m not that innocent.”

Ladies and gentlemen, it is no secret that one song made Alicia Keys a superstar: “Fallin’”.  One of the Grammy winner’s four number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Fallin’,” which spent six weeks at the penthouse. The multiplatinum single graces Keys’ septuple-platinum debut album, Songs in A Minor.

So, what makes “Fallin’” so iconic? Well, it’s inspired by (and interpolates) the James Brown classic, “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”. While Brown provides a lift instrumentally, everything else about “Fallin’” is all about Alicia Keys.  She shows off her authentic, soulful pipes, a welcome addition to the then-booming neo-soul movement.  Lyrically, the focus is L-O-V-E, a universal, always ultra-relatable, and potent theme.

“I keep on fallin’ in

And outta love with you

Sometimes I love ya, sometimes you make me blue

Sometimes I feel good, at times I feel used

Lovin’ you darlin’, makes me so confused.”

The lilting 12/8 meter, the fresh production work (in 2001, of course), and the heartfelt, honest lyricism make “Fallin’” one of the great musical gems of the aughts.

17. Nelly & Kelly Rowland, “Dilemma”

Oh, snap! St. Louis rapper Nelly (Cornell Haynes Jr., b. 1974) and contemporary R&B singer Kelly Rowland (Kelendria Rowland, b. 1981) joined forces for one of the best and biggest hits of the 2000s, “Dilemma”. “Dilemma” is the 10^th track from Nelly’s 2002 multi-platinum album, Nellyville. Legendary songwriters Kenneth Gamble (b. 1943) and  Bunny Sigler (1941 – 2017), as well as producers Antoine “Bam” Macon and Ryan Bowser, composed “Dilemma.” The nearly five-minute-long song samples a Patti LaBelle (b. 1944) gem (“Love, Need and  Want You”) and D-Train (“Misunderstanding”). A dominant number-one hit, it spent 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. The biggest accolade is the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, as well as a nomination for Record of the Year.

“Dilemma” thrives off its smooth, tasteful production work. Both Nelly and Kelly Rowland have a terrific backdrop to fuel their musical fire.  Rowland delivers beautiful, playful vocals. Beyond the excerpted pre-chorus, Rowland eats on the dedicated, tuneful chorus.

“No matter what I do

All I think about is you

Even when I’m with my boo

Boy, you know I’m crazy over you.”

Kelly does an awesome job of setting the tone for Nelly.  Nelly brings pitched, melodic, pop-rap to the verses.  His cadence and flow are compelling and agile.  Throughout, he delivers his fair share of memorable lyrics. According to the rapper, “She got the hots for me, the finest thing my hood done seen.” He adds in the first verse, “I never been the type to (Never) break up a happy home (But, uh) / There’s somethin’ ‘bout baby girl, I just can’t leave alone.” Ooh-wee! A dilemma, indeed! He makes it clear in the second verse, “And there’s no way / Nelly gon’ fight over no dame.”  The dilemma continues as he tells her, “You and Derrty got ties for different reasons / I respect that, and right before I turn to leave / She said, ‘You don’t know what you mean to me.” While many key parts of this duet are performed separately, there are moments when Nelly and Kelly collaborate seamlessly.  Nelly adds consistent ad-libs to Kelly’s timeless chorus.  In the refrain, Kelly reciprocates Nelly’s references to different geographic religions with ad-libs. In the final chorus, they are locked in on three words: “You know I’m.” “Dilemma” remains a surefire vibe decades later.

Alicia Keys was ‘that girl’ back in the 2000s.  Her best albums were Songs in A Minor (2001) and her sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003).  The Diary of Alicia Keys is where one of the best songs of her musical catalogue hails from: “If I Ain’t Got You”. Keys is singing to her lover in this neo-soul classic.  The only thing that she wants is him – her boo.  This is best exemplified in the chorus, one of the most timeless of the aughts from my perspective:

“Some people want it all

But I don’t’ want nothing at all

If it ain’t you, baby

If I ain’t got you baby

Some people want diamond rings

Some just want everything

But everything means nothing

If I ain’t got you, yeah.”

Further making “If I Ain’t Got You” the bop that it is – the music and the production work. She delivers a passionate, soulful vocal, while the piano accompaniment is simply perfect. As a pianist, those arpeggiated lines are fun to play and lovely to the ears.  Beyond the piano, there’s additional ear candy:  a relatively simple drum groove, bass, smooth electric guitar, horns… Yeah, this just screams love and matrimony!

YEAHHHH!!! On Confessions, the 2004 masterpiece LP by Usher, “Yeah!” is a surefire attention-getter. “Yeah” serves as the banger – the club joint.  On the former, 12-week no. 1 single, the Grammy-winner receives some help from some of his southern friends: Lil Jon and Ludacris.  Both Lil Jon and Ludacris earned a Grammy courtesy of “Yeah!” winning Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. “Yeah!” continues to bang two decades later. Sure, crunk has long fallen by the wayside, but “Yeah!” remains fresh. The beat! Those minor-key synths! Usher exemplifies swagger:

“Yeah, shorty got down low said, come and get me

Yeah, I got so caught up, I forgot she told me

Yeah, her and my girl, they used to be the best of homies

Yeah, next thing I knew she was all up on me screamin’…”

Throw in Lil Jon’s exuberant shouts (“Yeah!”) and Ludacris’ nastiness (“If you hold the head steady, I’mma milk the cow…I won’t stop till I get ‘em in their birthday suit…”), and “Yeah!” showcases ultra-beast mode 💪.

20. Mariah Carey, “We Belong Together”

Really, is there any introduction needed? Mariah Carey was everywhere in 2005, experiencing a resurgence in popularity that many musicians could only dream of. “We Belong Together” was a big reason for that, spending 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Emancipation of Mimi gave Carey her biggest critical and commercial triumph in years.

“When you left, I lost a part of me / It’s still so hard to believe / Come back, baby, please / ‘Cause we belong together.” “We Belong Together” is simply an enjoyable, well-rounded R&B break-up song.  Mariah Carey misses her man and begs him to come back because, in her eyes, they “belong together.” It’s well-produced (Carey, Jermaine Dupri, and Manuel Seal) without being incredibly flashy. The production does get a lift from two samples – “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” (Bobby Womack) and “Two Occasions” (The Deele featuring Babyface). Its simplicity and straightforwardness serve it well.    The biggest selling point? The voice – “marvelous darling!”

21. Nelly Furtado, “Promiscuous” (Ft. Timbaland)

Timbaland sings in the chorus of one of 2006’s biggest, most inescapable pop hits, “Promiscuous” (Loose).  Naturally, the Grammy-winning lead artist, Nelly Furtado, responds to Timbo, singing, “Promiscuous boy, you already know / That I’m all yours, what you waiting for?” Clearly, the promiscuity is turned up to 10 on this flirty, fun, and sexy joint.  In addition to duetting with Furtado, Timbaland produces the joint alongside Danja.

Sex is written all over “Promiscuous” – how could it NOT be? “You just expect me to just let you hit it?” Furtado responds to Timbaland’s flirting in the first verse, continuing, “But will you still respect me if you get it?” A relevant question, Nelly.  Furthermore, she as a point at the end of the verse where she essentially tells this thirsty beast to slow down (“Boy, I’m tired of runnin’, let’s walk for a minute”).  The second verse is more of the same, with Furtado referencing a nursery rhyme and putting her own spin on it, ending it with the statement, “Chivalry is dead, but you’re still kinda cute.” Oh, snap! Timbaland, being the suave, promiscuous man that he is, asserts, “They call me Thomas, last name Crown / Recognize game, I’ma lay mine’s down.” Jesus!  The ridiculous lyrics and sexual innuendo don’t stop, which is part of the reason “Promiscuous” is so much fun to listen to.  Also, even though it is sexual, it’s non troppo – not overly filthy. Playing “Promiscuous” for your pastor would still be crazy work, but it’s not too bad 😈.

22. Rihanna, “Don’t Stop The Music”

Five words: “Please don’t stop the music.” 2007 was a huge year for Rihanna.  That statement is an understatement. The biggest album of her career, Good Girl Gone Bad arrived.  The album featured a crown jewel, a diamond-certified single, “Umbrella”, as well as several multi-platinum songs. The sextuple platinum “Don’t Stop The Music” peaked at no three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008 (it debuted in December 2007). The StarGate-produced gem received a lift from a famous sample: “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” by the late, great Michael Jackson. Specifically, beloved lyrics “Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-ko-ssa” (forgive the spelling) earned RiRi and MJ a lawsuit from Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango. It is one of the most memorable parts of this dance-pop gem, and MJ’s classic too.

The chorus of “Don’t Stop The Music” is infectious to the nth degree:

“I wanna take you away

Let’s escape into the music, DJ, let it play

I just can’t refuse it

Like the way you do this, keep on rockin’ to it

Please don’t stop the, please don’t stop the music.”

Yeah, more like HELL YEAH! DON’T STOP THAT MUSIC! Thematically, “Don’t Stop The Music” is focused on the dancing… and taking it beyond the dancefloor (“What goes on between us, no one has to know / This is a private show, oh”). Ooh-wee! The ‘beyond’ the dancing is kept suggestive – no bad language or explicitness to be found here.  After all, Good Girl Gone Bad arrived before Rihanna became edgier with her Rated R phase. To this day, “Don’t Stop The Music” is a dance-pop/contemporary R&B banger that kicks ass and takes names. Keep that music going!

Look no further than “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” one of the best songs in the illustrious musical catalog of Beyoncé.  The song, which rightfully won the Grammy for Song of the Year, appears on her 2008 double album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. “Single Ladies” is filled with fun. Produced by Queen Bey, The-Dream, and Tricky Stewart, “Single Ladies” remains fresh 15 years after its arrival.  The beat! The synths! Most of all, the assertive, attitude-laden vocals of Queen Bey with catchy lyrics make “Single Ladies” a surefire winner.  The minute you hear it, whether you’re a single lady, a married lady, or a fella, it makes you wanna dance – #INFECTIOUS.  The chorus is golden, with Beyoncé telling these boys, if you like it (aka her), you better lock it (her) down!

Oh, snap, Jay-Z (Shawn Carter)! What happens when you put two highly decorated musicians on the same track? Excellence.  At least, that’s the case with Jay-Z, a 25-time Grammy winner, and Alicia Keys, a 17-time Grammy Winner, who joined forces in 2009 to create a new anthem for the state of New York and New York City with “Empire State of Mind”. “Empire State of Mind” marked one of the brightest spots on Hov’s The Blueprint 3.  Notably, the beloved, dominant hit spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2024, it was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.  “Empire State of Mind” was nominated for three Grammys at the 53^rd Annual Grammy Awards, winning two of them (Rap Song and Rap/Sung Collaboration). JAY-Z, Keys, Al Shux, Angela Hunte, Janet Sewell, Sylvia Robinson (1935 – 2011), and Bert Keyes (1930 – 1987) penned the unforgettable late ‘00s gem. “Empire” samples a soul classic, “Love On A Two-Way Street” by The Moments; hence the writing credits for Robinson and Keyes. Hunte, Sewell, and Shux produced it.

Jay-Z draws first blood on “Empire State of Mind.” In the first verse, he characterizes himself as the new Sinatra, referencing the “Theme From New York, New York”: “I’m the new Sinatra, and since I made it here / I can make it anywhere, yeah, they love me everywhere.”  The rapper goes on to reference his drug-dealing days, asserting, “Catch me in the kitchen, like a Simmons whippin’ pastry.” Of course, Hov has come up on those Billboard charts, and he’s “Sittin’ courtside, Knicks and Nets give me high-fives.” Following Jay-Z’s verses, Keys gets the honor of performing the most memorable part of the song, the chorus, in all its glory.

“In New York

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of

There’s nothin’ you can’t do

Now you’re in New York

These streets will make you feel brand-new

Big lights will inspire you

Let’s hear it for New York, New York, New York.”

She’s a star, including in the bridge that appears after his third verse, but Jay-Z remains on point, dropping some of the best rhymes of his career. Beyond the Yankee game he mentions in the second verse (excerpted earlier), he adds, “You should know I bleed blue, but I ain’t a Crip though / But I got a gang of niggas walkin’ with my clique though.” In the third, he continues to highlight the city, spitting, “Good girls gone bad, the city’s filled with them / Mami took a bus trip, now she got her bust out / Everybody ride her, just like a bus route.” Woo! Ultimately, “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys is a once-in-a-lifetime song.

25. Adele, “Rolling in the Deep”

Nine words: “We could have had it all / Rolling in the Deep.” Adele had already garnered buzz with her debut album, 19, which earned her first two Grammy wins.  That said, “Rolling in the Deep” from 21 definitely had a much bigger impact than “Chasing Pavements” could’ve ever hoped for (it was quite underrated BTW).  “Rolling in the Deep” was a ubiquitous number-one hit – a crossover masterpiece.

Where style is concerned, “Rolling in the Deep” fuses pop, soul, gospel, and retro superbly. Adele herself describes it as “gospel disco.” The minute I heard it, I knew she had a surefire winner on her hands.  In addition to powerhouse vocals and awesome production, the theme and songwriting are top-notch.  Basically, her man wronged her; she’s done with him, and there’s definitely going to be hell pay – “You’re gonna wish you – never had met me.”  No surprise that “Rolling in the Deep” won four Grammys by itself (including Record and Song of the Year), in addition to 21 winning two, most notably Album of the Year.  One of my favorite lyrics: “Finally, I can see you crystal clear / Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your shit bare.”

Oh, sugar-honey-iced-tea-holy-fucking-moly! Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter Miguel had one hell of a year in 2012. His sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream, was not only one of the best albums of 2012 but also one of the best of the decade.  Furthermore, the Grammy-winning Best R&B Song, “Adorn” is one of the truest of R&B gems of the 2010s – NO CAP.

“Adorn” commences Kaleidoscope Dream with an old-school R&B sound mixing 80’s sensibilities (particularly the drum programming) and soul-leaning cues. Miguel’s vocals are lovely, yielding superb nuances and spot-on falsetto. The songwriting is chivalrous.  Miguel seems to be focused on just her alone – monogamy – not multiple women. He’s sensual, mind you, on this exceptionally penned record, but he also seems genuinely dedicated to ensuring she’s his.  “Baby these fists / Will always protect you,” he asserts in the second verse, adding, “And this mind / Will never neglect you.” The chorus is simple but quite effective:

“You just gotta let my love

Just let my love adorn you

Please, baby (Would you be my friend, my freak?)

Yeah, you gotta know, you gotta know

You know that I adore you

Yeah,  baby.” 

“Adorn” is nothing short of excellence exemplified. This sexy joint is the song to beat in the Miguel catalog.

27. Katy Perry, “Roar”

Katy Perry sings in the first verse of her gargantuan, uplifting hit, “Roar”, which graces her 2013 album, Prism. Essentially, the Grammy-nominated pop artist did not use her voice and kept the peace at her own cost. That’s totally wrong! Thankfully, Perry changed her tune, realizing after she “Stood for nothing” and “feel for everything,” she needed to assert herself – find her roar if you will.  In the pre-chorus, she is strong, unwilling to be muzzled anymore, instead flexing her muscles.  “You held me down, but I got up,” she memorably sings, setting up one of the best choruses of the 2010s:

“I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter

Dancing through the fire

‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar

Louder, louder than a lion

‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar!”

Woo! Over exuberant production, Katy Perry shuts down antifeminists and asserts her power to be what and who she wants to be.  She doesn’t settle for others to make decisions for her, she is firmly in the driver’s seat.  The days of being passive are done: “I went from zero, to my own hero.”  Whether you’re a girl or woman like Perry who has far too long let others (men) keep you down, or you a boy/man who lets others run all over you and take your power, it is time to find your ROAR and make sure that the whole world can hear it loud and proud.  “Roar” NEVER grows old – it’s among Perry’s best.

28. Hozier, “Take Me To Church”

“Take Me to Church” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It marked a huge, breakthrough hit for Irish singer/songwriter Hozier (Andrew John Hozier-Byrne). The standout from Hozier (2014) was nominated for the Grammy for Song of the Year.  Listening emptily, it’s easy to see why it was a massive hit.  Who doesn’t enjoy a song that references sex?  Considering the depth of its subject matter analytically, it’s almost unbelievable that it achieved the commercial accolades it did. In a NY Mag interview, the Irish singer/songwriter describes the song as being about sex, humanity, and disdain for the church’s “teaching shame about sexual orientation.”  The lyrics of the song confirm those strong feelings:

“My church offers no absolutes

She tells me ‘worship in the bedroom’

The only heaven I’ll be sent to

Is when I’m alone with you.”

Furthermore, in the interview, he tackles the influence of the church in Ireland, and homophobia in Russia. Key lyrics, such as “We were born sick, you heard them say it,” confirm this. Throughout its course, “Church” amplifies blasphemous references to make a statement.  Ultimately, that statement is that all humans, regardless of sexuality, should be able to love and be with whomever they’d like.

29. The Weeknd, “The Hills”

Woo, woo, WOO! Grammy winning Canadian R&B artist The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) had everybody on board with his 2015 album, Beauty Behind the Madness, which was chock-full of hits.  That said, Beauty Behind the Madness isn’t a clean, family friendly album in the least.  A prime example of a huge hit being a bit edgy is the f-bomb laden, yet irresistible, dramatic slow jam, “The Hills.” 

In 2015, everybody was singing that glorious chorus, which commences with the lyrics, “I only call you when it’s half past five.” Besides the memorable chorus, there were many reasons why this record shone.  First and foremost, the distinct, beautiful vocals by The Weeknd.  As always, he sings with great expression, truly selling the lyrics.  Also, the lyrics – well – they’re pretty strong, delivering a pretty compelling narrative (“Drivin’ through the gated residential / Found out I was comin’, sent your friends home / Keep on tryna hide it, but your friends know”).  Throw in elite production work (Illangelo and Mano) and a tuneful melody to match those notable lyrics, and “The Hills” literally has ‘hit’ written all over it.

Only you to trust, only you.”

Amen, Amen! Kanye West is one of music’s most polarizing artists. He’s said some bizarre, off-the-wall, and truly despicable things throughout his career.  However, that career has been illustrious, spawning ample hits.  He’s an innovator who has 24 Grammy awards to his name out of 75 nominations (to date). Two of those nominations came from a marvelous, minimal, rap-gospel song, “Ultralight Beam”.  “Ultralight Beam” commences his somewhat messy 2016 album, The Life of Pablo.  Where does the gospel come into play? Well, this haunting number embraces his spiritual side, enlisting assists from Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price, The-Dream, and renowned gospel innovator Kirk Franklin.  “Ultralight Beam” was not a pop hit, settling for number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100, with just two weeks tallied. Despite modest performance, “Ultralight Beam” is incredibly memorable and has been certified by the RIAA as multiplatinum. Notably, this track features eight producers: West, Chance the Rapper, Swizz Beatz, MIKE DEAN, Plain Pat, Noah Goldstein, DJDS, and Rick Rubin.

Following the sampled intro (excerpted above), Kanye West delivers the simple but memorable, tuneful chorus:  “We on an ultralight beam / We on an ultralight beam / This is a God dream / This is a God dream / This is everything / This is everything.” He follows with a simple verse, minimal but not dissimilar to some Christian songs (“Deliver us serenity / Deliver us peace / Deliver us loving / We know we need it…”).  After another iteration of the chorus, The-Dream, with the assist from the choir, delivers the memorable post-chorus: “I’m tryna keep my faith / But I’m lookin’ for more…” Kelly Price takes the reins in the second verse, which is more lyrically complex.  She caps it off with ample faith: “Oh, no longer am afraid of the night / ‘Cause I, I look to the light.” Word! Chance The Rapper enters with a sung bridge, also memorable, leading into an epic mostly unpitched rap verse with no shortage of one-liners.  Some of the lyrical gems include the opening “Foot on the Devil’s neck ‘til it drifted, Pangaea,” “Treat the demons just like Pam / I mean, I fuck with your friends, but damn, Gina,” which references Martin, his own musical highlight, “Sunday Candy”, and some Biblical allusions, led by “Know what God said when he made the first rainbow.” Of course, Kirk Franklin ministers in the outro, true to self, with the choir concluding with four key lyrics: “Faith, more, safe, war.” “Ultralight Beam” is minimalistic yet epic.  West crafted a rousing, spiritual masterpiece.

31. Kesha, “Praying”

Kesha gave us all chills on the Grammy-nominated single “Praying”, one of the best moments from her 2017 album, Rainbow.  “Praying” marked a departure – a stark contrast from her past work. A ballad, it’s clear from the jump she’s aiming for empowerment for herself and others who’ve been in an unfortunate situation.  By the end of the song, the powerhouse vocals are mind-blowing. Dr. Luke, who goes nameless but is implied throughout the song, is in the doghouse:

“‘Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell

I had to learn how to fight for myself

And we both know all the truth I could tell

I’ll just say this is I wish you farewell…”

It should also be noted that Rainbow features numerous instances of Kesha ‘stepping up her game,’ opting for empowerment and thoughtfulness over gimmickry and silliness.

32. Hozier, “Nina Cried Power” (Ft. Mavis Staples)

Grammy-nominated, Irish singer/songwriter Hozier (Andrew Hozier-Byrne) commences his 2019 sophomore album, Wasteland, Baby!  powerfully with “Nina Cried Power”. The songwriting by Hozier is impeccable – meaningful and thought-provoking.  Notably, in the first verse, many of the lines are framed with it’s not and it is, as evidenced by the lyrical excerpt.

Hozier is in full-on soul mode – think gospel, in an alternative sort of way. The soulfulness of the backdrop (Hozier and Markus Dravs), and his own powerful pipes, is fitting given his legendary collaborator, Mavis Staples.  Staples’ performance is like the cherry 🍒 on top, specifically her contributions on the chorus, the crème de la crème of the record:

“And I could cry power (power)

Power (power)

Power, lord

Nina cried power

Billie cried power

Mavis cried power.”

Staples is also electric in the bridge, where she asserts, “And I could cry power / Power has been cried by those stronger than me…” Speaking of the power, both artists pay homage to various musicians who were unafraid to protest via their songs.  These musicians mentioned in the song include legends like Nina Simone (duh), James Brown, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon 💪. Among the best songs of 2018, it peaked at number 13 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (and other genre-specific charts) though failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

History-making, black LGBTQ+ artist Lil Nas X is responsible for the countrified/melodic hip-hop smash “Old Town Road” (7 – EP) that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks! “Old Town Road – Remix,” the most popular version, features Billy Ray Cyrus singing the refrain (once), as well as the third verse. “Old Town Road” is quite charming for a variety of reasons, including lyrics that play off of clichés associated with country music. In the second verse, he kicks things off pop-rapping, “Ridin’ on a tractor,” and later adds, “Bull ridin’ and boobies / Cowboy hat from Gucci / Wrangler on my booty.” ‘Boobies’ aren’t idiomatic of country music, mind you, but the other stuff is.  The hip-hop beat, coupled with ‘country-folk’ guitars, fueled by a prominent Nine Inch Nails sample (“34 Ghosts IV”), adds to the sheer excellence. Although a novelty cut, it’s one for the ages!

34. The Weeknd, “Blinding Lights”

The best song from After Hours, as well as the best song of 2020, is “Blinding Lights”.  The former Billboard Hot 100 no. 1 hit is an epic pop song by Grammy-winning, Canadian R&B artist, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye).  Shockingly, “Blinding Lights” and After Hours, arguably The Weeknd’s best work to date was snubbed by the Grammys.  Of course, you can’t cry over spilled milk, so, let’s continue to rave over this musical excellence despite the fact it was WRONGED. “Blinding Lights”  commences enigmatically with a minor key (eventually settling into major) and moody synths.  This is before the groove settles in, one of the biggest selling points. There’s plenty to ❤ about this single, starting with its pop/pop-rock vibe. Max Martin and Oscar Holter produce alongside Tesfaye.

“Blinding Lights” features beautiful vocals; the form is straightforward, while the centerpiece should come as no surprise – the chorus:

“I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights

No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch

I said, ooh, I’m drowning in the night
Oh, when I’m like this, you’re the one I trust

Hey, hey hey.”

Thematically, The Weekend focuses on love, relationships, and sex – predictable, but always effective. All in all, “Blinding Lights” is superb, showing his versatility on this sick, utterly infectious pop record.

Woo! Ari Lennox (Courtney Salter)  is on fire on “Pressure”, period.  Her vocals are sassy and sexy – potent to the nth degree. The big draw is the personality she unleashes, in all its unrepentant sexiness. “So fine and spicy, baby, jump up on this (pressure) / I guess that’s why you like it, baby, come and get this pressure,” she sings on the infectious chorus.  Besides the chorus, Lennox ‘does the damn thing’ on the verse, proving she’s a surefire, bad chick.  “Too fuckin’ hot for all these clothes anyways,” she confidently asserts, continuing, “My body drippin’, boy, but you gon’ have to wait / But when you get it, lick it like a candy cane.” Day-um! Clearly, the sex is through the roof, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Although painfully underrated, the R&B singer/songwriter is incredibly talented. The utterly sublime, steamy single was produced by Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, and Elite. Not only is Ari Lennox is fierce AF on “Pressure,” but so is the backing instrumental, which has a dash of old-school. “Pressure” ranks among the best songs released in 2021.

36. Omar Apollo, “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me)”

“Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me)” is the crème de la crème of Ivory, the debut album by  Omar Apollo (Yes, “Tamagotchi” might have something to say about that). The intro of this soulful, heartbroken record says it all: “He don’t love / Me no more.” Most of Ivory focuses on a relationship in which Apollo has participated with another man and the various ways it has affected him.  “Evergreen” might be the biggest moment, as he can’t get him and the rejection off his mind. “Evergreen, he controls me / Was there something wrong with my body?” he asks in the first verse.  In the second, more light is shed: “She don’t know you like me / She could never love you more / More than me.” Apollo was so infatuated with him that he sometimes pray his ex falls in love. Nobody wants to see this incredibly gifted, handsome man in pain, but his pain on “Evergreen” is our listening pleasure.  Adding to the pleasure is the epic live version, “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All) [Live At NPR’s Tiny Desk]”, the highlight of his Tiny Desk concert for Latinx Heritage Month.

Troye Sivan embraces and doubles down on his sexuality on the club-infused, Grammy-nominated bop, “Rush”.  “Rush” serves as the opener and lead single of his third studio album, Something To Give Each Other.  It’s fabulous and gay AF. The music video seals the gay deal of “Rush”.  Still, even if Sivan had denied us a visual of appetizing fit, shirtless men, and sexual liberation, the sound of the record is giving gay gym / gay club.  This slick joint was produced by Styalz Fuego, NOVODOR, and Zhone.  Lyrically and thematically, sex is written all over this record.  Sure, there’s dancing, but it’s dirty dancing! “Trust the stimulation, don’t you let it break / Every stimulation, promise I can take,” Sivan sings in the first verse, adding, “What you wanna give? Boy, you better show me what / You’ve been schemin’ up.” WOO! The heat continues in the second verse, where Troye asserts, “Pass your boy the heatwave,” adding, “Kiss it when you’re done, man, this shit is so much fun / Pocket rocket gun.” Clearly, while listening to the heat and surefire bop that is “Rush”, you should be some place where it’s okay if you get a little, um, turned on!

And so, begins the Kendrick Lamar diss directed toward Drake, “Not Like Us”. The sound is intentionally clubby and commercial. Atypical of him artistically, Kendrick clowned Drizzy post-“Family Matters”. “Not Like Us” was produced by Mustard, Sounwave, and Sean Momberger. “They not like us, they not like us, they not like us.” The sleekness of the instrumental is a selling point, but the bars ‘take the cake.’ Early on, K-Dot spits, “What’s up with these jabroni-ass niggas tryna see Compton?” He adds, “Beat your ass and hide the Bible if God watchin’.” He’s willing to compromise his Christianity to F him up. There’s more, in the first verse: “Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophiles,” and, “Why you trollin’ like a bitch? Ain’t you tired? Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.” Gah-day-um! Verse two finds Lamar continuing to eat Drake TF up, bringing up skeletons in the closet: “Fucked on Wayne girl while he was in jail, that’s connivin’…” He clowns his moniker as the 6 God: “Devil is a lie, he a 69 God, ayy / Freaky-ass niggas need to stay they ass inside, ayy.” In the third verse, he criticizes his artistry, accusing him of using others for clout. One of the best jabs by K-Dot: “Let me hear you say, ‘OV-ho.’” “Not Like Us” is the third of three red-hot joints where Kendrick destroys his adversary.

Translated to English, the lyrics read, roughly, “Another beautiful sunset I see in San Juan / Enjoying everything that the departed are missing out on.” Grammy-winning Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 rapper, singer, and songwriter Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, b. 1994) shines bright like a diamond on his Grammy-nominated song, “DtMF”. “DtMF” is an acronym for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” which translates as “I Should Have Taken More Photos” in English. “DtMF” is the penultimate track from his 2025 Grammy-nominated album, also titled DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. Bad Bunny wrote “DtMF” with MAG, JULiA LEWiS, Scott Dittrich, and Tyler Spry. MAG, Dittrich, LEWiS, and Spry also produced the highlight with La Paciencia and Hydra Hitz.

“Pero queriendo volver a la última vez / Que a los ojos te miré,” Bad Bunny sings, and continues, “Y contarte las cosas que no te conté (Te parece’ a mi crush, jaja) / Y tirarte la’ foto’ que no te tiré (Acho, jura’o te ves bien linda, déjame tirarte una foto).” The intriguing lyrics, excerpted from the first verse, translate as “But wanting to go back to the last time / That I look into your eyes / And tell you the things I didn’t tell you (You look like my crush, haha) / And to take the pictures I didn’t get to take (Damn, I swear you look so pretty, let me take a picture of you).” In this captivating and colorful “DtMF,” Bad Bunny is in nostalgic, recollective, and regretful mode. In the chorus, the crowning achievement of the record, he regrets not making more memories. “Debí tirar más fotos de cuando te tuve /Debí darte más beso’ y abrazo’ las vece’ que pude [I should’ve taken more pictures when I had you / I should’ve given you more kisses and hugs whenever I could],” he sings, and continues, “Ojalá que los mío’ nunca se muden / Y si hoy me emborracho, pues que me ayuden [I hope my people never move away / And if I get drunk today, I hope they help me out].” Accompanied by a picturesque, sleekly produced backdrop (those keys and synths radiate, while the rhythmic groove provides a mean anchor once it enters), Bad Bunny is authentic, sincere, and on autopilot on this thoughtful Latin pop number. Even if you barely understand a lick of Spanish, “DtMF” is sure to move you and greatly enhance your playlist.

Ooh-wee! There you have it! RAYE (Rachel Keen) introduces “Nightingale Lane.”, the 11^th track from her highly anticipated sophomore album, THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. The five-minute ballad marks the second single from the project. RAYE co-wrote “Nightingale Lane.” with Tom Richards and Chris Hill. RAYE and Richards produced it.

“Nightingale Lane.” begins with a drum groove, which establishes the compound duple meter. Following RAYE’s spoken word intro (excerpted above), she dives into this moving ballad. She serves up polished, refined vocals.  She’s incredibly honest during the first verse: “Was a pain that made me colder now / After the oceans I cried, I’m made of steel.” A reminiscent pre-chorus marvelously prefaces the chorus, the song’s crowning achievement. “Nightingale Lane.” delivers a unique harmonic progression and also modulates, keeping the listener on their toes.  That modulation occurs during the chorus, where RAYE delivers powerful, rhythmic, and high-flying vocals. She oozes with soul.

“Somebody loved me once

And someday, somebody will again

Like the way you love me…

On Nightingale Lane…

Although we never made it

Strange, you showed me it’s true

I’m capable of loving someone the way I loved you…”

The second verse returns to the original key, much like the first verse. Strings add lushness.  Naturally, verse two flows better since the listener gets a clearer sense of where RAYE is going. The second chorus continues the excellence of the first, with RAYE continuing to sing her face off. The bridge is even more rhythmic, leading to a powerful outro. The sustained notes that RAYE sings here are EVERYTHING! “Nightingale Lane.” shows the incredible artistry and musicianship of RAYE. “Someone will love me / Like the way you loved me / On Nightingale Lane.” Amen!
