Trey Songz, Animal | Track Review 🎵

On the fifth single from Tremaine the Album, “Animal,” Trey Songz can’t control his sexual urges – she “brings out the animal.”

Ahead of Tremaine the Album, Trey Songz releases one final single, “Animal.” Like the singles preceding it, the R&B artist relies on sex as the motivation.  Playing true to its animalistic title, Trey offers no shortage of sensual metaphors, namely the reference to his anaconda. Interestingly, “Animal” isn’t overtly explicit.  It remains risqué, but ends up being less profane than some of the singles that arrived previously.

At the beginning of “Animal” – following the elephant trunk sound effect – Trey Songz lays his horniness out there for the world to see.  The chorus keeps it 100, in the most tasteful way possible:

“I ain’t gonna lie but baby, you get pretty wild, girl
When you take it off, take it off
When days turn to night, that’s when you show your other side
With all those freaky thoughts, freaky thoughts
You bring out the animal.”

After the chorus, the animal comes out hard and heavy.  Beyond the anaconda, Trey desires to “get to your forbidden fruit” and “Turn the bed into a jungle.” On the pre-chorus, he continues to think with his anaconda:

“I’m a dog, I’m a dog
I’m a eat that pussy cat.”

After referencing National Geographic on the second verse, Trey goes bolder on the third.

“I go ape up on the donkey (throw that ass)
I be throwin’ this banana all around
Put my face up in the monkey
No umbrella but the rain is pourin’ down.”

Tasteful doesn’t describe the verse, but somehow, he gets away with being sexually explicit with only offering one objectionable word.

Final Thoughts

“Animal,” once again, gives Trey Songz another potential hit.  Once more, yet another electrifying single sets up Tremaine the Album to be a captivating, sensual listen.  The new R. Kelly of sorts, Trey Songz continues to find ways to make sexually driven songs sound fresh and compelling.  “Animal” is no different.
