3.5 out of 5 stars

Pop collective OneRepublic prepares to release fourth studio album, Oh My My. After dropping promo single “Kids,” OneRepublic returns with “Future Looks Good.”Judging by the latest single, the future does indeed look good for the band.

“Future Looks Good” opens with rhythmic guitars. This is the main source of groove throughout the first verse. Ryan Tedder delivers clear vocals throughout the verse. One of the key lyrics hails from the first verse:

“You see I had this crazy dream last night / this man, he talked to me / he told me / everything that’s good and bad about my history”

The first chorus is sans percussion as well and overall, subtle:

“He said that you are / you are the future / and the future looks good”

Verse 2 builds up in regards to production, but still isn’t full blown. Tedder is more assertive vocally:

“Oh call me any time that / every time you’re losin’ it / and tell me / anyone and everyone who makes you feel like shit”

The second iteration of the chorus is fuller. The percussive component anchors.  “Future Looks Good” proves to be a positive, uplifting song about forgetting the past and embracing the future.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Future Looks Good” is another strong record from OneRepublic ahead of forthcoming album Oh My My. Like “Kids,” “Future Looks Good” has the future in mind as opposed to the past.  Even so, both singles are distinct of one another.  “Future Looks Good” is rock-solid.  Game changing? No, but definitely worthy of some spins.
