“The Drip 💦 is Real on These 11 Songs” features some stellar, drippin’ music courtesy of Cardi B, Jack Harlow, Lil Baby & Gunna, and Tory Lanez.  

“Lemme tell you ‘bout the drip / Credit credit charged up, hope my mom don’t flip / Gucci gun, Margiela clip / Got the Louis V beat and the Fendi ad-lib.”  Tiny Meat Gang (YouTube personalities Cody Ko and Noel Miller) seem to nail the ‘drip’ action ‘right on the head’ on their parody track, “Drip.”  The thing is, the artists featured on this #TeamDrip, drippin’ playlist seem to take things more seriously.  Previously the playlist 10 Urban Songs That Either Drip or Drop incorporated five songs that fit the criteria of being #TeamDrip.  The criteria? Feature the word ‘drip’ in their respective song title.  Those five songs are reprised on The Drip 💦 is Real on These 11 Songs, which adds six newbies to the fold, courtesy of The Backpack Kid, City Girls, Jack Harlow, Lil Baby & Gunna, T.I., and Tory Lanez.

1. Jack Harlow, “Drip Drop”

Ft. CyHi The Prynce

Loose • Generation Now / Atlantic • 2018

“Yeah, this shit knockin’ / And she, and she, she tryin’ give noggin’ / Tryin’ show the youngin’ what the tip-top is / But see me, I’m just tryin’ see what the drip-drop is.” If you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing Jack Harlow yet, you’re totally missing out.  The young rapper from Louisville, Kentucky doesn’t look like your typical hip-hop artist, but proves he has bars, particularly on his brief single “Sundown” from his 2018 album, Loose. As awesome as “Sundown” is, the song at hand, “Drip Drop,” is ‘the cat’s meow’ itself, bringing CyHi The Prynce along for the ride.

Throughout his verse, Jack Harlow spits plenty of game, aka he ‘talks a lot of shit.’  That’s pretty typical of rap, as Harlow focuses on flexing and most of all, sex.  CyHi The Prynce brings the same attitude to the second verse asserting at the top, “Drip droppin’ / Call the maintenance man, I don’t fix faucets.” For CyHi, it’s material and of course, sexing.  His best line?

“She vegan so I hit her with the eggplant🍆, huh
Her daddy rich so, so I’m Stedman, huh.”

2. Cardi B, “Drip”

Ft. Migos

Invasion of Privacy • Atlantic • 2018

“Came through drippin’ (drip drip) / Diamonds on my wrist, they drippin’.” Cardi B had an incredible year in 2018, releasing her Grammy-nominated debut album, Invasion of Privacy. Assisted by Migos, Cardi and the boys flex hard, slaughtering the competition (and haters) on this drip anthem, which incorporates numerous pop culture references including ultra-lux rides (Mercedes, Bentley) and celebrities (Kimbo Slice, Tina Turner, and Cal Ripken, Jr.) among other things.

3. T.I., “Big Ol Drip”

Ft. WATCH THE DUCK

Dime Trap • Epic • 2018

“All that stuff you buyin’, it don’t mean shit / On some boost your self-esteem shit ‘cause you ain’t seen shit / Callin’ me an activist, stumbled on it by accident / You can see I’m passionate but not a politician though.” In the 00s, T.I. was one of the biggest, most popular, commercially successful rappers.  The Grammy-award winner was definitely a fixture beyond the Atlanta rap scene.  The 10s weren’t quite as kind, but nonetheless, ‘King of the South’ returned in 2018 with a respectable new album, Dime Trap. On the song “Big Ol Drip,” T.I. continues a trend of ‘drip’ songs, assisted by WATCH THE DUCK, who also appeared on his 2014 album, Paperwork.

DUCK further amplifies the soulful dimension of the record with his distinct, gritty vocals:

“You don’t know the risk if you ain’t carried the weight
If you ain’t never been down the road that wasn’t already paved
Some shit I don’t remember, and some I’ll never forget
Ain’t nobody give me nothin’, ain’t nobody tell me shit
Big ol’ drip.”

As always, T.I. brings the heat, with a compelling flow and respectable bars on both of his verses (excerpted at the top of the blurb). The production itself has old-school qualities, combined with delightful southern rap cues – brassy synths and a sick beat.

4. Lil Baby & Gunna, “Drip Too Hard”

Drip Harder • Quality Control Music / 300 Entertainment • 2018

Lil Baby has had a great year in 2018 – understatement. His brief, collaborative record with Drake, “Yes Indeed”, helped to ‘fuel the fire’ for a successful album, Harder Than Ever. Post-studio album, Lil Baby teams up with Gunna forces for the 2018 mixtape, Drip Harder. Given the drippin’ title, it’s not shocking that the tape also has a ‘title track’ or sorts, the brief, ‘flex’ banger, “Drip Too Hard”. “Drip Too Hard” clocks in at just about two-and-a-half minutes, similar to “Yes Indeed.” Baby performs the first verse, rapping about luxury, drugs, and status.

The chorus that follows up is lengthy and not exactly ‘catchy.’

“Drip too hard, don’t stand too close
You gon’ fuck around and drown off this wave
Doin’ all these shows, I’ve been on the road
I don’t care where I go as long as I get paid
Bad lil’ vibe, she been on my mind
Soon as I get back, she gettin’ slayed…”

Gunna performs the second verse, referencing material (“Diamonds dancin’ in the dial like this shit is a parade”), “bitches gettin’ saved” (Totally not Biblical), and status. Sure, the record fits our needs on this bitchin’, drippin’ list to a ‘T,’ but it’s certainly NOT transcendent.

5. City Girls, “Drip”

Girl Code • Quality Control Music / Motown / Capitol • 2018

“Drip-drip-drip on a hundred / Y’all hoes hate… / Icy, this pussy pricey, these niggas like / Wanna buy me and fly me private, won’t ask politely / We’re the hottest, these bitches know it, these niggas too / I will call a bitch my sis and be fuckin’ on my boo.” Wow… that’s pretty cold right there… Anyways, “Drip” appears as the 10^th track on City Girls’ 2018 sophomore album, Girl Code (their debut project, Period, was also released in 2018).  City Girls saw their profile elevated thanks to appearing in one of 2018’s hottest songs, Drake’s ubiquitous “In My Feelings”.

For the girls, they aren’t playing around, yet in one sense, they are literally (a f-word comes to mind) . JT asserts on the first verse, “I be doin’ shit bitches never do / I make a jealous bitch sick, yes, she got the flu.” Yung Miami is actually worse on the second verse, first asserting, “And my main boo never trip ‘cause this pussy good as shit,” before taking things to an even freakier level.

“Pull them Bickies to the side, I call that designer head
Eenie, meenie, moe, I fuck him, I fuck his bro
Do they love me? I don’t know, ‘cause I’m all about my dough
Nigga, I don’t wanna snuggle, let him fuck, he wanna cuddle
You know I got that drip, you look down, you see a puddle 💦.”

6. The Backpack Kid, “Drip on Boat”

Ft. Swaghollywood

SwagPack Kid (EP) • Winmore • 2018

“Too much drip on me, yeah I need a boat.” Definitely sounds like a lot of drippin’ there The BackPack Kid.  Who is The BackPack Kid? Ah, he’s the Georgia teen (Russell Horning) who created the viral dance sensation known as the Floss. Horning has done very well from himself since achieving viral success, including appearing on SNL with Katy Perry, as well as appearing in the music video for “Swish Swish”.  2018 saw Horning release his debut, 10-minute EP, SwagPack Kid, featuring the song at hand, “Drip on Boat.”

The BackPack Kid is assisted by Swaghollywood on the first half of the chorus, before he drops the aforementioned lyrics.  Naturally, on the pop-rapped verses, Horning brags about how awesome he is, much like most rappers. Give him credit though – he does it sans profanity and tasteless, objectifying references to girls. 

“Too much drip on me, gotta learn how to float
I got on designer from my head to my toes
I ain’t asked for help, yeah, I did it on my own
I don’t see a hater, you can get up out my zone.”

7. Rich the Kid, “Drippin”

Ft. Chris Brown

The World is Yours • Interscope • 2018

“Baby girl like the ocean / Deep sea when I’m stroking / She changed her hair, I don’t notice / But that pussy keep me focused…” One word perfectly describes Rich the Kid and “Drippin,” which appears on his 2018 debut album, The World is Yours: cliché.  You could also throw ‘shallow’ into the mix, because sex dominates the record.  Honestly, “Drippin” focuses specifically on the female genitals. Also, in the drippin’ mix are references to foreign cars (Ferrari, Rolls-Royce Wraith), lux brands (Chanel), and long hair (Rapunzel).

Uber and Chevrolet also get thrown in the mix:  “And her hair real long like Rapunzel / My Puerto Rican bitch, she thick and keep the bundles / Pull up in it, oh I pull it out (pull it out) / Pussy good, need that shit like every time…” It should also be noted that Chris Brown serves as a featured guest on this record, which appeared on the original ‘drip’ list, 10 Urban Songs That Either Drip or Drop.

8. Tory Lanez, “DrIP DrIp Drip”

Ft. Meek Mill

LoVE me NOw • Mad Love / Interscope • 2018

“Stacks all on me / Big drip on me / Faucet on me / I’m dripping water… / She like it on me, ayy, she like it on me / Drip, drip, drip!” Believe it or not, Canadian rapper/singer Tory Lanez released two studio albums in 2018 – MEMORIES DON’T DIE and LoVE me NOw.  MEMORIES DON’T DIE had its moments, but it also continued to find Lanez struggling to find an artistic identity.  Whether he fixed that on LoVE me NOw I can’t personally attest to – it appeared on that non-existent ‘albums I skipped in 2018’ list.  But we give Mr. Lanez some credit for “DrIP DrIp Drip,” a single featuring Philly rapper Meek Mill.

 

Like the aforementioned lyrics suggest, Tory Lanez is hella confident about himself, as are the girls who are into him.  Shocker.  On the first verse, he comes right out and says, “She wanna fuck well it’s dependin’ y’know…,” later asserting “Thick bitches wanna ride.” It’s cliché AF, but hey, we’ve got a whole list of drippin’ going on ourselves so… Meek Mill is turned up as well, bragging, “Bad bitches been fucking me fast,” and shares with us that he “Had a threesome the same day I went to trial.”  The power of the drip, not to mention stimulation.

9. Luke James, “Drip”

Drip – Single • Island • 2017

“Deal with your emotion (ooh) deal with them / Dive into the ocean (ooh) dive in, dive in / Everything is open (ooh) everything is open baby / You’re the one that’ chosen (mmm oh) / Let it drip…” Grammy-nominated R&B musician Luke James is a stud – name me any man or woman that will deny that fact.  Besides his good looks, the man can also sing like a ‘mofo.’  Again, find me any man or woman that will deny that fact either.  The falsetto featured on  “I Want You” serves as the proof in case you needed any.  This isn’t about “I Want You,” or James’ looks, but rather his own contributions to the drippin’ experience, “Drip.”

“Drip” is chocked-full of sexual innuendo and sometimes outright sex, but also encompasses emotional support and encouragement.  Unlike many of the other drippin’ numbers that appear on this playlist, there is only one notable pop cultural reference: Janet Jackson.

“Feeling on your booty but I’d rather feel your soul (soul) soul
Girl I know you ain’t Janet but I like you in control.”

10. Future & Young Thug, “Drip on Me”

Super Slimey • Epic / Atlantic • 2017

“All this drop on me (Pluto) / Gotta keep an extra clip on me (I swear, yeah, yeah) / Keep it on me like ID (Future) / Ain’t no swag for free (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Freebandz).” On “Drip on Me” (Super Slimey),  Future and Young Thug brag about money and material things (shocker), while also rapping about hustling and trapping. In the process, the two idiosyncratic Atlanta rappers reference Pluto (Future), Foreign rides (Bentley, Rolls-Royce Wraith), ultra-lux watches (the ubiquitous Patek Phillipe) ballers (LeBron James), and iconic video games (Sonic the Hedgehog).

11. Offset & Metro Boomin, “Ric Flair Drip”

“Going to the jeweler, bust the AP, yeah / Slide on the water like a jet-ski, yeah / I’m tryna fuck you and your bestie, yeah / Chopper with the scope so do not test me / Ric Flair drip, go ‘woo’ on a bitch.” Offset flexes like a boss on “Ric Flair Drip,” which also pays ode to the famous wrestler, Ric Flair. Though it appears on his collaborative album with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, Without Warning, 21 Savage doesn’t appear on this particular, pop culture-rich joint.  Among the numerous pop cultural references? Luxury watches (Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillipe), luxury cars (Lamborghini, Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Wraith) and even more ultra-lux clothing (Balenciaga and Valentino).
