Steve Aoki, Neon Future III [Photo Credit: Ultra]DJ/producer Steve Aoki enlists K-pop sensation BTS on his record “Waste it On Me,” the promo single from his 2018 LP, ‘Neon Future III.’

Good things happen when Steve Aoki is behind the boards – it’s a fact.  Even better things happen when Aoki collaborates with a big-time guest, BTS.  That’s exactly the ‘musical marriage’ that occurs on dance single “Waste it On Me.” The enjoyable collaboration appears on Aoki’s 2018 album, Neon Future III, which arrives November 9, 2018.

“Waste it On Me” features sleek production work by Steve Aoki, again, ‘as always.’ In particular, the initial subtlety is a selling point, before Aoki builds things up on the chorus. Specifically, the colorful, brassy synths used on the chorus stand out. Aoki’s contributions certainly contribute to the chill, easy-going, and ear-catching nature of the record.  Of course, he gets plenty of help.

BTS shine on their respective contributions. The crème de la crème moments come courtesy of Jungkook, who serves up smooth vocals on the first verse in particular. His breathy, youthful tone is awesome. On the following pre-chorus, joined by RM and Jimin, they soundly preface the song’s centerpiece, the chorus.

“And I know there’s no making this right, this right (This right)
And I know there’s no changing your mind, your mind (Your mind)
But we both found each other tonight, tonight (Oh yeah)
So if love is nothing more than just a waste of your time.”

The afore-referenced chorus is catchy, memorable, and tuneful, built on the typical repetition of modern-pop:

“Waste it on me, waste it on me
(Waste it on me)
Tell me, why not waste it on me? Waste it on me
(Waste it on me).”

The second verse, performed by RM, is also smooth, while the third, another RM contribution, blends melodic/pop-rap and straight bars. Even with a bit more rhythm and freer pitch or lack thereof, the verse offers up nothing too crazy.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Steve Aoki and BTS make a formidable team on “Waste it On Me.”  This is a pleasant dance/pop song that has incredible crossover appeal.  The production is awesome, the vocals are on point, and the songwriting is memorable and catchy enough.  This exemplifies ‘well-roundedness.’
