Silk City (Mark Ronson and Diplo), alongside Dua Lipa, bring a house-infused, energetic, sexy single in “Electricity” that’s a lift to any playlist.
Silk City is a special project by renowned producers Mark Ronson and Diplo. Ronson has won five Grammys (Record of the Year twice, Pop album, Producer, Pop Duo/Group Performance), while Diplo has won two (Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronic Album). The collaborative duo has released various singles throughout 2018, including their latest, “Electricity.” For “Electricity,” Ronson and Diplo enlist one of pop’s brightest rising stars, Dua Lipa.
As expected, Dua Lipa sounds terrific on vocals, flaunting those distinct, husky, and powerful pipes from the jump. She has a great personality, at least musically, that translates well on this particular record. On the chorus, she “brings it on home”:
“And even if I could
I wouldn’t turn on you
And I wouldn’t stop the world for you
You know I wanna let you know, I’ll never let this feeling go
This love has no ceiling, I cannot deny…”
Additionally, there are vocal effects in play, adding even more color to the sound of the record. While Lipa is a force in her own right, she’s fueled by ‘electrifying’ production work. Who would expect any less from Ronson and Diplo? Silk City blesses the track with a danceable, house-flavored backdrop. The production is led by an infectious groove, piano straight out of the 90s, and bright, colorful synths. Notably, a bit more of Ronson’s vintage-sound influence arrives on the outro, which sounds as if it would’ve been at home on an even more throwback, soul-tinged record.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Silk City, alongside Dua Lipa, bring a record that’s a lift to any playlist. If you don’t feel the “electricity,” well, perhaps your power is completely turned off… something like that. Will it change the state of pop, dance, or your life? Nah, but this is the perfect end of summer song to extend summer into the fall.
