In the 96^th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Bring It On Home to Me,” performed by Sam Cooke.

[nx_pullquote]“If you ever change your mind / About leaving, leaving me behind / Baby, bring it to me.”[/nx_pullquote] Rock Hall of Famer Sam Cooke (1931 – 1964) is rightfully designated as the King of Soul. Although short-lived, Cooke set the tone and established a high watermark for R&B/soul music. Among his soulful, unforgettable hits is “Bring It On Home to Me,” which appears on various greatest hits compilations, including The Man Who Invented Soul (2000). A success on the pop charts, it peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cooke composed “Bring It On Home to Me” while Rene Hall arranged it. Cooke and Hugo & Luigi – Hugo Peretti (1916 – 1986) and Luigi Creatore (1921 – 2015) – produced it.

“Bring It On Home” features a rhythm section (guitars, bass guitar, piano, and drums), saxophone (William Green), and a string orchestra (violins, violas, and cellos). Supporting Sam Cooke’s soulful lead vocals is another legend performing second (baritone) vocals: Lou Rawls (1933 – 2006). But the star of the show is The King of Soul himself, Sam.  Heartbreak and regret are firmly in play. In the second verse, Cooke admits, “I know I laughed when you left / But now I know I only hurt myself.” In the fourth verse, he admits even more: “You know I’ll always be your slave / ‘Til I’m buried, buried in my grave.” My, my, my! In the fifth and final verse, he still blames her for their breakup, but, in the final chorus, asserts, “But I forgive you, bring it to  me / Bring your sweet loving / Bring it on home to me.” All told, “Bring It On Home to Me” is a classic.  Why? Cooke is a vocal beast and a terrific songwriter.  The melody is tuneful, and the lyrics are memorable to the nth degree. Cooke and Rawls have awesome synergy.  The arrangement and production are classy, refined, and sophisticated – all the things.  What more needs to be said? The music speaks for itself, and it speaks volumes, baby! “Yeah!”
