1. Elton John & Dua Lipa, βCold Heart β PNAU Remixβ
πΏ The Lockdown Sessions β’ π· Mercury β’ π 2021Β
π΅ βCold Heart (PNAU Remix)β kicks πΏ The Lockdown Sessions β the 32nd studio album by iconic musician, π Elton John β off with a bang!Β π PNAU β π Nicholas Littlemore, π Sam Littlemore, and π Peter Mayes β create a transformative remix, period. π Dua Lipa joins John on a delightful mashup sampling his classic, π΅ βSacrificeβ and the interpolation of another, π΅ βRocket Manβ.
From the onset, βCold Heartβ grooves hard. The production is brilliant β colorful, picturesque, and incredibly slick. John is the first voice heard, adorning the warm, groovy backdrop with lyrics from βSacrifice.βΒ Following verse and pre-chorus, a sublime sounding Lipa enters singing βRocket Manβ creating a super cool effect.Β I like the way that Lipaβs vocals are layered as βCold Heartβ progresses

2. Dua Lipa, βCoolβ
πΏ Future Nostalgia β’Β π· Warner β’ π 2020Β
Following up the electric π΅ βDonβt Start Nowβ, the crowning achievement of πΏ Future Nostalgia, is no easy task.Β π Grammy-winning pop artist π Dua Lipa does a bang-up job with βCool.β Thereβs nothing cold β at least, in a negative way β about βCoolβ which is memorable and well-rounded. Itβs an elite number from Dua Lipa.
π Stuart Price and π TMS give Dua Lipa a colorful backdrop to work with, incorporating the best of pop of old as well as that βfuturisticβ script.Β Most notably, she has the personality and pipes to construct a terrific performance.Β The chorus ranks among the biggest selling points β catchy and energetic AF.
βGot me losinβ all my cool
βCause I’m burninβ up on you
In control of what I do
And I love the way you move
Weβll get the heat and the thrill
Gives you more than any pill
Never runninβ out of juice
When itβs only me and you
You got me, you got me losinβ all my cool
I guess weβre ready for the summer.β
3. Migos, βAvalancheβ
πΏ Culture III β’ π· Quality Control Music β’ π 2021
βWoo, Papa was a rollinβ stone, but now I got rollinβ stones in the bezel (Ice) / Mama at home all alone, hustlinβ, tryna keep this shit together (Mama).β Woo indeed π Quavo! π Migos get off to a sensational start on πΏ Culture III with π΅ βAvalanche.β Β Here, those triplet flows are compelling, with memorable rhymes and one-liners.Β Itβs not all Quavo on this hook-less juggernaut, of course! π Takeoff and π Offset get into the action as well on this top tier moment from a lengthy, overstuffed LP.
Besides Migos themselves, arguably, the biggest draw on βAvalancheβ is the production (Quavo and π DJ Durel). π The Temptationsβ π΅ βPapa Was a Rolling Stoneβ fuels the fire.Β This is a sample I never envisioned would be as effective as it is on this trap banger.Β In this case, the precipitation π¨β β well β itβs lit π₯!

4. Chris Stapleton, βColdβ
πΏ Starting Over β’ π·Β Mercury β’ π 2020
βOh, girl, you know you left this hole / Right here in the middle of my soul.β π Grammy-winning country musician π Chris Stapleton shines on π΅ βCold,β among the best songs from his fourth studio album, πΏΒ Starting Over. On this five-minute-plus, gorgeous, minor-key βslow burnerβ, a passionate Stapleton is brokenhearted to the nth degree. βWhat am I supposed to say / If anybody ask me about you?β he sings on the second verse, adding, βGuess Iβll tell βem Iβm without you.β
At another point in this heartbroken gem, Mr. Stapleton asserts, this girl βCut me knife / And put my love on ice.β Man, oh man, I feel that pain! βColdβ is a masterful blend of country and rock, with a dash of soul.Β Even with its classic touches β classy strings and Hammond B3 β thereβs a crossover appeal.Β You donβt have to love country music to love this one β it stands on its own.Β
5. The Weeknd, βSnowchildβ
πΏ After Hours β’ π·Β Republic β’ π 2020
With a title like π΅ βSnowchild,β it should come as no surprise that π The Weeknd references drug use on this gem from πΏ After Hours. Β βI was singing notes while my niggas played with six keys / Walking in the snow before I ever made my wrist freeze,β he sings on the reflective first verse.
As evidenced by those lyrics, βSnowchildβ is more than drugs, though the π Dizzy Gillespie line is pretty rad (βI was blowing smoke, had me βDizzyβ like Gillespieβ). He explores his childhood, coming up and becoming famous, and of course, drip and sex. Itβs another winning moment from After Hours by all means.Β

6. Omarion, βIceboxβ
Ft. Timbaland
πΏ 21 β’ π·Β Sony BMG Music Entertainment β’ π 2006
βGirl, I really wanna work this out cause Iβm tired of fighting / And I really hope you still want me the way I want you / I said I really wanna work this out, damn girl Iβm trying / Itβs no excuse, no excuse.β Sometimes, playlists on The Musical Hype fail to include cuts that arrive prior to 2010.Β Obviously, pop music didnβt just begin in 2010, but to keep things a bit more βin the now,β the focus is often on some of the newer songs.Β In this case, we make an exception with an π Omarion classic, π΅ βIceboxβ (πΏ 21, 2006). Maybe βclassicβ is a bit of an overstatement, but in the context of the R&B singerβs discography, βIceboxβ ranks at or near the top.
While the pre-chorus is sweet, the most memorable lines from this π Timbaland-produced joint (alongside π King Logan and π Johnkenun Spivery) occur on the chorus.Β Thatβs where Omarion sings: βBut I got this icebox where my heart used to be / But I got this icebox where my heart used to be.β Timbaland assists as well as he follows O with the lyrics βIβm so cold, Iβm so cold, Iβm so cold, Iβm so cold.β Β Beyond the memorable lyrics, the chorus is dramatic.Β One easily believes and relates to how heartbroken the R&B singer is.Β Of course, it doesnβt hurt to have a superb backdrop to fuel the fire, sigh.

7. Christian French, βAvalancheβ
π΅ βAvalancheβ β’ π· Disruptor / Columbia β’ π 2021
βI thought Iβd always love you / But now I canβt / Oh, I started an avalanche.β Indeed, π Christian French, indeed. Β The good news, however, is π΅ βAvalancheβ, the pop single, is a surefire bop.Β Yeah, maybe things are messy in Frenchβs love life, or so the lyrics suggest, but this βFrenchβ original right here β fire.Β So, what makes βAvalancheβ a bop? Well, it starts with the authentic, expressive vocal performance.Β Listening to Christian sing these heartfelt, honest, and reflective lyrics, you buy what heβs selling β believable to the nth degree. Listening to him sing, and reading the lyrics, I can totally visualize and relate to the feelings conveyed.
βThese thoughts that started in my head
So cold had a snowball effect
Oh no, I tried, I canβt outrun
The damage is already done.β
When reflecting on the song and his own experiences during a difficult year via IG, it makes sense that heβs giving his all on this record.Β Beyond the vocals and songwriting dabbling in those matters of the heart β reneging on the love β βAvalancheβ benefits from sound, fitting production. Sure, French has unleashed an avalanche, he wonβt βsnowβ on your listening paradeβ¦ Okay, that made no sense, but what Iβm saying is, French delivers βthe goodsβ with βAvalanche.β

8. Run the Jewels, βwalking in the snowβ
πΏ RTJ4 β’ π· Jewel Runners LLC / BMG Rights Management β’Β π 2020
βJust got done walkinβ in the snow / Goddamn, that motherfucker cold,β π Gangsta Boo spits on the memorable, incredibly potent, and powerful chorus on π΅ βWalking in the Snow.βΒ βWalking on the Snowβ ranks among the crΓ¨me de la crΓ¨me of πΏ RTJ4, the fourth studio album by π Run the Jewels. π El-P and π Killer Mike get socially conscious, specifically focusing on racial inequality.
El-P calls out hypocrisy on the first verse: βPseudo-Christians, yβall indifferent, kids in prison ainβt a sin? Shit / If even one scrap of what Jesus taught connected, youβd feel different.β Killer Mike really goes in on the second verse, sporting contrasting production, spitting, βAnd you so numb, you watch the cops choke out a man like me / Until my voice goes from a shriek to a whisper, βI canβt breathe.ββ A collaborative verse between the two rappers is nothing short of awesome.

9. Adele, βCold Shoulderβ
πΏ 19 β’ π· XL β’ π 2008
βYou grace me with your cold shoulder / Whenever you look at me, I wish I was her.β I think we all know a little something about a cold shoulder, π Adele, sigh (more than enough to be honest).Β When one revisits the debut LP by the π Grammy award winner, two songs typically come to mind: π΅ βChasing Pavementsβ and π΅ βHometown Gloryβ.Β That said, our shoulder song at hand, π΅ βCold Shoulder,β is another bop from the gifted singer.
βCold Shoulderβ stands out first and foremost thanks to the vocals of Adele β sheβs an absolute gift. Typically, we hear her serenading us with balladry.Β Thatβs not what goes down on this lushly produced π Mark Ronson record (those strings, that driving, rhythmic groove!).Β Adele has some tempo behind her, while still delivering glorious, high-flying, soulful pipes. Adding to the allure of course is this narrative where her ex is totally ignoring her, and she hates it.Β A prime example occurs in the second verse as she sings, βThese days when I see you / You make it look like Iβm see-through.βΒ Perhaps the most interesting section of the song from a musical standpoint is the bridge β quite ear-catching.Β

10. Sabrina Claudio, βFrozenβ
πΏ About Time β’Β π· SC Entertainment, LLC β’Β π 2017
βThe flowers will be blooming / The leaves will be turning / And snow will be falling while weβre making loveβ¦β Ooh-la-la! If for some reason you havenβt heard rising R&B singer π Sabrina Claudio is a talented musician that deserves wider recognition.Β Before releasing her debut album πΏ No Rain, No Flowers in 2018, she dropped a mixtape, πΏ About Time (2017).Β Thatβs where our cold, icy triumph, π΅ βFrozenβ hails from.
Claudio delivers silky-smooth, sexy vocals throughout the course of βFrozen.β βFrozenβ is a radiant, romantic, and sensual slow jam.Β Her tone is quite appealing; she sounds breathy, singing with a sense of chill and poise. Even given this approach, Claudio still manages to deliver a sizable punch. Her upper register is gorgeous.Β The pre-chorus, a key part of the song excerpted above, continues:
βAnd the sun will be shining
The flowers still are blooming
Then leaves will turn again.β
So, where does the βfrozenβ part of βFrozenβ come into play? Sabrina isnβt singing about literal ice yβall.Β No, sheβs referring to frozen in the context of being at a βstand-still.βΒ This stand-still is positive though, per the chorus: βBut time will be frozen for usβ¦βΒ

11. AFI, βSnow Catsβ
πΏ AFI (The Blood Album) β’ π· Concord β’Β π 2017
βI am not scared enough / Prepared enough / You wanted me in distress / Iβve nothing left to fear / I am, I am here.β Well, that is declaratory π Davey Havok!Β The lyrics appear from π΅ βSnow Catsβ, one of the advance singles from πΏ AFI (The Blood Album), the 2017 album by goth-rock vets, π AFI.
βSnow Catβ commences with a respectable opening with arpeggiated guitar. It features clear vocals by the frontman, who sounds as compelling as ever. Β AFI, as a band, does a great job of establishing the theatric element of βSnow Catsβ early on. Throughout, the use of backing vocals adds a nice touch, particularly on the chorus. The first half of the verses are a bit too spare in production. The second half of the verses are fuller, with the chorus providing atonement. The bridge is heavier as well, distinguishing itself from verses and chorus. All in all, βSnow Catsβ is quite enjoyable.

12. Bring Me the Horizon, βAvalancheβ
πΏ Thatβs the Spirit β’Β π· Sony β’Β π 2015
βItβs like an avalanche, I feel myself go under / βCause the weight of itβs like hands around my neck,β π Bring Me the Horizon front man π Oli Sykes sings on the chorus of π΅ βAvalanche.β He continues on the gigantic chorus of the seventh track from πΏ Thatβs the Spirit (2015): βI never stood a chance; my heart was frozen over / Anβ I feel like I am treadinβ on thin ice.βΒ Naturally, the lyrics of βAvalancheβ are associated with the devastating disaster that can potentially kill.Β Throughout the record, Sykes is clearly in a bad place, evidenced by the βchronicβ nature of the lyrics.Β βAnd no, itβs not a phase, βcause it happens all the times,β he sings on the first verse, while heβs seeking a cure β βan antidoteβ β on the second verse.
The thing is, why would Oli Sykes be looking for a βcureβ for an avalanche? That seems like incorrect terminology. Well, thatβs because heβs NOT talking about a literal avalanche β duh! Instead, heβs referencing his condition, ADHD.
βI need a cure for me, βcause a square doesnβt fit the circle
Give me a remedy, βcause my head wasnβt wired for this world.β

13. James Brown, βCold Sweatβ
πΏ Get on the Good Foot β’ π· UMG Recordings β’ π 1972
βWhen you kiss me / When you miss me / Hold my hand / Make me understand / I break out β in a cold sweat.β Woo! π James Brown was a vibe back in the day.Β Guess what? The late, great icon is still a vibe today!Β The man had countless hits including the incredibly sweaty π΅ βCold Sweatβ from his 1972 album, πΏ Get on the Good Foot. The lyrics were always few, but the groove and the βfunked-upβ arrangements were always on-point. βCold Sweat, Pt. 1β represents another surefire bop for the Godfather of Soul.
Like most of the feverish, sweaty, temperature songs that grace this list, βCold Sweatβ is about love (and sex).Β In the first verse, James Brown asserts, βI just want, our love to last,β later adding, βI just want to satisfy your pulse.β Interestingly, in the second verse, he shifts some of the focus to himself, singing, βI donβt care, about the way you treat me darling / I just want, you to understand me, honey.β Also, worth noting, Brown drops an important shout-out to his great saxophonist, π Maceo Parker.

14. Jet, βCold Hard Bitchβ
πΏ Get Born β’ π· Elektra β’ π 2003
βCold hard bitch / Just a kiss on the lips / And I was on my knees / Iβm waiting, give meβ¦β Give me what β βThat is the question!β Woo! Australian rock band π Jet doesnβt play around on π΅ βCold Hard Bitchβ β more like, they fuck around (or want toβ¦)! Β Frontman π Nic Cester adds on the chorus, βCold hard bitch / She was shakinβ her hips / So that was all that I need.β The unapologetic record appears as the ninth track on their 2003 debut album, πΏ Get Born.Β Clearly, the motivation for the guys in Jet are knocking boots, getting some, getting laid β having S-E-X.
Beyond the chorus, the verses are naughty β titillating for sure!Β In the first verse, Nic claims, βSpent all my rent / Girl, you know I enjoyed it, yeah.β Hmmβ¦ weβll leave that at that. In the second verse, heβs thirsty AF, trying to get her attention, and, in the pre-chorus asserts, βGonna take her home βcause sheβs over romancing / Donβt wanna hold hands and talk about our little plans, alright.β Again, βCold Hard Bitchβ has sex written all over it.Β The problem is, does this hottie thatβs being lusted over βgiveβ? Doesnβt seem like itβ¦
15. The Chi-Lites, βThe Coldest Days of My Lifeβ
πΏ A Lonely Man β’ π· Brunswick Record Corp. β’ π 1972
βColdest days of my life / They were the coldest days of my life / I had to run for cover.β My, oh my! Prepare to be sad in the happiest way!Β Thatβs right, soul collective π The Chi-Lites are responsible for one of the greatest, if saddest, soul records of all time.Β The eight-and-a-half-minute π΅ βThe Coldest Days of My Lifeβ is one of the best, most heartfelt soul songs EVER.Β Naturally, itβs love thatβs messed the fellas up on the ninth and final track from πΏ A Lonely Man (1972).
Despite βThe signs of springtimeβ intact with birds, βSome of us cried / Canβt you see, oh, canβt you see / The tears in my eyes?β The depression is ripe as The Chi-Lites petition God to βTake the pain awayβ because ββ¦ it couldnβt be much worse.β Yikes! The collective even asserts, βIt just couldnβt be much worse / Down below / It just couldnβt be that bad.β In hell? That seems to be the case!
