A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021๐ŸŽง [๐Ÿ“ท: Anna Shvets, Annette Dawm, Barcelos_fotos, Brent Faulkner, Brianna Amick, cottonbro, The Musical Hype, Nicholas Swatz, Pexels, Sharon McCutcheon, Ylanite Koppens]A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021 ๐ŸŽง features Arca, Asbjรธrn, girl in red, KAYTRANADA, Lil Nas X, Rina Sawayama & Years & Years.

On The Musical Hype, we keep it progressive (just in case you hadnโ€™t noticed). ย We love to celebrate people of all different walks of life, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, and otherwise and definitely ARE NOT about hatefulness, injustice, or racism.ย  One particular area of emphasis, since the inception of the site in 2016, has been highlighting the LGBTQ+ community ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ.ย  Often, this is a community that offers plenty of intriguing music yet doesnโ€™t always get its just due.ย  Furthermore, so many of the songs from these incredibly talented artists are quite personal, relatable (regardless of gender or sexual orientation), have a message that can be educational, enlightening, and/or teachable, and worthy of wider recognition.ย  The point is, weโ€™ve tried to feature these musicians as well as compile compendiums with some highlights.ย  Once again, that is our goal with the 30-song list at hand, ๐ŸŽง A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021.

Obviously, ๐ŸŽง A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021 only scratches the surface. ย Yes, we highlighted some, but there are so many others who didnโ€™t get their shine on here โ€“ we suck! Still, this list features both better known LGBTQ+ artists/allies as well as some artists who deserve more attention.ย  Often, weโ€™ve simply expanded lists, much like 2020โ€™s ๐ŸŽง A Compendium Comprised of 100 Notable LGBTQ+ Songs ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ.ย  On A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021, with an exception, we mostly focus on songs that werenโ€™t previously compiled on the โ€˜big list.โ€™ Our newest list features ๐ŸŽ™ Arca, ๐ŸŽ™ Asbjรธrn, ๐ŸŽ™ girl in red, ๐ŸŽ™ KAYTRANADA, ๐ŸŽ™ Lil Nas X, ๐ŸŽ™ Rina Sawayama, and ๐ŸŽ™ Years & Years among others. So, without further ado, whether you are reading and listening to this during PRIDE month or otherwise, I hope you find a new bop or two to add to your listening rotation from A Must-Hear PRIDE ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Compendium: 2021!

1. Lil Nas X, โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Columbia โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Lil Nas X, "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œIโ€™m not fazed, only here to sin / If Eve ainโ€™t in your garden, you know that you canโ€ฆโ€ Woo!ย  ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning, genre bender ๐ŸŽ™ Lil Nas X returned with a hot, controversial new single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ€. Nas X, who came out as gay ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ when acquiring his success with ๐ŸŽต โ€œOld Town Roadโ€ has embraced his sexuality and identity โ€“ AWESOME!ย  On โ€œMONTERO,โ€ he reflects on his own experiences with his sexuality โ€“ he is Montero Lamar Hill, after all.ย  Fueling the fire musically is sleek production courtesy of ๐ŸŽ› Roy Lenzo, ๐ŸŽ› Omer Fedi, and ๐ŸŽ› Take A Daytrip.ย  That said, itโ€™s the lyrics and narrative that make โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ€ truly special. The eyebrow raising music video is something in its own right, making conservatives totally lose their ๐Ÿ’ฉ.

Lil Nas X keeps things short but totally sweet on โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name).โ€ The sweet part are the many experiences he references associated with many gay men at some point or other. On numerous occasions, he expresses desires including โ€œI wanna feel on your ass in Hawaii / I want that jet lag from fuckinโ€™ and flyinโ€™ / Shoot a child in your mouth while Iโ€™m ridinโ€™โ€ and arguably, more intriguingly, โ€œNever want the niggas thatโ€™s in my league / I wanna fuck the ones I envy, I envy.โ€ The latter lyric from the second verse is ear-catching because of the layers โ€“ crushing on someone more fit, handsome as well as potentially someone who is heterosexual as opposed to homosexual. The other notable thing expressed by Nas X is the plight of being a gay (LGBTQIA+ ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ) individual whether itโ€™s being trapped in the closet, religious tension, or any number of factors. Lots to unpack on this bop, and everyone should take the time to do so regardless of your sexuality.

2. KAYTRANADA, โ€œWhat You Needโ€

Ft. Charlotte Day Wilson

๐Ÿ’ฟ BUBBA โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

KAYTRANADA, BUBBA [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]In 2019, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning producer ๐ŸŽ™ KAYTRANADA (Louis Kevin Celestin) released his sophomore album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ BUBBA.ย  Backtracking a bit, if you are unfamiliar with KAYTRANADA, Andy Kellman (AllMusic) provides some biographical info: โ€œKnown for J Dilla-inspired beats and woozy house grooves, a Montreal-based producer whose full-length debut won the 2016 Polaris Music Prize.โ€ ย Also, worth noting, Celestin is gay, something he discussed in a 2016 Fader article penned by Alex Frank.ย  On the โ€˜whatโ€™ song that hails from BUBBA, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWhat You Need,โ€ Celestin enlists the services of a fellow Canadian, ๐ŸŽ™ Charlotte Day Wilson, on vocals. Also, worth mentioning, Wilson is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ.

โ€œI never wanted you
To see this part of meNow all I can hope to do
Is tell you still
That itโ€™s what you need...โ€

โ€œWhat You Needโ€ appears on the second half of BUBBA, specifically the tenth track.ย  The production is a glorious mixture of groovy, sensual, and smoothness.ย  The synths that KAYTRANADA uses are marvelous, characterized by balance, decadence, and potency. The beat = stellar, stellar, STELLAR! ย Add Celestinโ€™s instrumental with those cool, smoky vocals of Charlotte Day Wilson, and the vibe is nothing short of killer.ย  The result is a great blend of dance, electronic, and R&B.ย  ย

3. Asbjรธrn, โ€œYoung Dumb Crazyโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ BOYOLOGY โ€ข ๐Ÿท Embassy of Music GmbH โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Asbjรธrn, โ€œYoung Dumb Crazyโ€ [๐Ÿ“ท: Embassy of Music GmbH]๐ŸŽ™ Asbjรธrn (Asbjรธrn Toftdahl Terkelsen) is a talented, 28-year-old pop musician from Denmark. The Danish artist proves heโ€™s no slouch, shining on ๐ŸŽต โ€œYoung Dumb Crazyโ€, the promo single from his upcoming third studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ BOYOLOGY.ย  On โ€œYoung Dumb Crazy,โ€ which Terkelsen wrote himself, he speaks from the perspective of an ex-boyfriend, but also, reflects on his own poor decisions within a relationship. โ€œIย put all the things into the song that I wished he would have said to me,โ€ he says, later adding, โ€œAs I wrote the song, I realised the double-perspective, the irony and my own hypocrisy.โ€ โ€œYoung Dumb Crazy,โ€ as you might suspect, is a must-hear.

Asbjรธrn, sun through blinds [๐Ÿ“ท: Johanna Hvidtved]Thereโ€™s plenty to heart about โ€œYoung Dumb Crazy,โ€ period. Produced by Asbjรธrn and ๐ŸŽ› Tom Stafford, the backdrop is warm, never crowding the vocalist.ย  More impressive are the lovely, cutting vocals by Terkelsen.ย  I love his tone, as well as the vocal production itself.ย  He delivers an authentic, expressive, and truly nuanced vocal performance.ย  Adding to the awesomeness is the sheer honesty of the lyrics and the personal tilt, as previously mentioned.ย  The crรจme de la crรจme is definitely the catchy, memorably penned chorus.ย  Somewhere around the 2:17 mark, โ€œYoung Dumb Crazyโ€ picks up intensity with some distinct vocal effects and colorful production touches. Itโ€™s a contrast to both what precedes and proceeds. All in all, he delivers the goods on โ€œYoung Dumb Crazyโ€ singing fantastically, writing great, personal, and reflective lyrics, and constructing a solid backdrop. Terkelsen adds another gem to the LGBTQ+ catalog and the pop catalog.

4. Arca, โ€œNonbinaryโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ KiCk i โ€ข ๐Ÿท XL Recordings Ltd โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Arca, KiCk i [๐Ÿ“ท: XL Recordings]โ€œI do what I wanna do when I wanna do it,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Arca (Alejandra Ghersi) asserts on ๐ŸŽต โ€œNonbinary.โ€ โ€œNonbinaryโ€ serves as the brief, experimental opener from the Venezuelan producerโ€™s 2020 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ KiCk i.ย  As to be expected, she writes and produces the record herself.ย  Furthermore, thematically, she speaks about being nonbinary.ย  Echoing the aforementioned opening lyric, Ghersi later states, โ€œI donโ€™t give a fuck what you think.โ€ Woo!

One of the big takeaways from โ€œNonbinaryโ€ musically speaking is the rhythmic aspect of the track.ย  Here, Arca raps aggressively over the ear-catching, minimalist backdrop. Eventually, the record expands in rhythmic scope and sound, becoming more dynamic. Ultimately, this is a colorful cut thatโ€™s a great addition to any LGBTQIA-related list, or any playlist comprised of truly unique, ear-catching music in general.

โ€œI can be friendly or I can be fake
I can be real or I can lick a taste
Whatโ€™s it gonna take?
I can be sexy or I could be sad
Act bad just to be sweet
What a treat
It is to be
Nonbinary...โ€

girl in red, "two queens in a king sized bed" [๐Ÿ“ท: world in red / AWAL]โ€œTwo queens in a king-sized bed / Thereโ€™s no mistletoe above our heads.โ€ So, would it be safe to call ๐ŸŽต โ€œtwo queens in a king sized bedโ€ a queer/lesbian ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Christmas ๐ŸŽ„ song?ย  Yep, for sure.ย  Pretty rad ๐ŸŽ™ Marie Ulven, better known as ๐ŸŽ™ girl in red.

Initially, the record features piano-driven production (girl in red and ๐ŸŽ› Matias Tellez), before the addition of more sounds. Still, many of the sounds incorporated end up being keyboard-based.ย  The Norwegian singer delivers chill vocals, exhibiting a beautiful tone.ย  Furthermore, besides her radiant, passionate performance, I adore the vocal production.ย  Further confirming the โ€˜bop statusโ€™ of โ€œtwo queensโ€ is the passionate, catchy songwriting, particularly on the centerpiece, the chorus:

โ€œI donโ€™t have a lot to give
But I would give you everything
All my time is yours to spend

serpentwithfeet, DEACON [๐Ÿ“ท: Secretly Canadian]โ€œCanโ€™t love no man โ€˜til I measured his feet,โ€ alternative R&B artist ๐ŸŽ™ serpentwithfeet (Josiah Wise) asserts on ๐ŸŽต โ€œSame Size Shoeโ€. โ€œSame Size Shoeโ€ is arguably the best song from his sophomore album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ DEACON.ย  Later, Wise heeds the advice of his aunt singing, โ€œMy auntieโ€™s right, donโ€™t fuck a man / If his shoes are two times the size of your hands.โ€ Woo!

Besides the unique lyricism of the record, serpentwithfeet delivers an expressive, nuanced, and truly refined vocal performance. His best moments include the ad-libs, the bridge where he asks for his trumpet (you just have to hear it for yourself), and of course, the chorus.ย  The chorus, as to expected, is infectious to the nth degree: โ€œMe and my boo wear the same size shoe.โ€ Additionally, the production (Wise, ๐ŸŽ› Brandon Juhans, and ๐ŸŽ› Batu) allures as well.

โ€œHellboyโ€ was written by Chance alongside ๐ŸŽผโœ Mike Robinson and ๐ŸŽผโœ Seth Ennis.ย  It is a suggestive record without being truly explicit โ€“ you could say that it doesnโ€™t cross the line.ย  Robinson, in addition to writing, also serves as the producer on this sleek, sexy joint. The chorus is sure to get you hot and bothered:

โ€œOoh, thereโ€™s a fire burning
Baby do you feel it?
Donโ€™t you let it go, let it go out
Ooh, burning a simple blue
It's like a forbidden fruit
And I want it so, want it so.โ€

Furthermore, the post-chorus continues the irresistible, truly stimulating experience.ย  Understandably, Greyson Chance is indeed a โ€˜hell boy.โ€™

โ€œHands tied, bite your lip
Green light, flip and twist
Dark magic, red boot kick
Iโ€™m a hell boy, Iโ€™m a hell boy

The sound is balanced yet quite colorful and ear catching.ย  The best moment is undoubtedly the catchy chorus, the centerpiece of this standout record. You donโ€™t have to be queer to relate to โ€œChosen Familyโ€; the messaging is applicable to any number of situations.

Anyways, the confident, electrifying Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter definitely brings mad attitude, mad energy, and ample heat to the sleek single at hand.ย  Can we go on and characterize โ€œI Need Thatโ€ as #SLAY???

โ€œNo more lockdown make it hot now / Better do the damn thing when I drop now.โ€ Woo! From the start of โ€œI Need That,โ€ itโ€™s S-I-C-K-E-N-I-N-G! As Ekelle says regarding the conception of the record, โ€œWeโ€™re all going a little stir-crazy now a year into the pandemic, but this is a track to help pull you out of a rut if youโ€™re not feeling so sexy.โ€ True to her word, she brings a heaping dose of sexiness (and sex itself).

โ€œGive her what she really want

The clever, sensual lyrics donโ€™t stop there whether its โ€œWrestling around till weโ€™re soaking wet / Letโ€™s have a night that you wonโ€™t forgetโ€ (Ooh-la-la) or โ€œFuck what they all say hot like Iโ€™m flambรฉ.โ€ Throw in a catchy, infectious chorus and fine production work, and ladies and gentlemen, we have a certified B-O-P! As the excerpted lyrics suggest, this record is as colorful as its title.ย  Our beloved artist mostly raps, bringing an agile flow and rhymes that are entertaining AF.ย  Of course, as to be expected, Lewis speaks about his preferred topic of choice โ€“ BOYS.

โ€œIโ€™m like a wildfire burning boys hearts,โ€ Myylo spits at one point, later captivating with the likes of, โ€œHokus Pokus witch bitch, I cackle in the dark.โ€ Wow! Of course, he rightfully throws a heartthrob into the mix: โ€œTimmy Chalamet, hit me up to eat his plum / Rum bum, bum, bum, he like how I roll my tongue.โ€ Yeah, heโ€™s exaggerating (I think), but who can blame him for loving some Timothรฉe Chalamet? Worth noting, thereโ€™s some singing on โ€œSavage Bopโ€ even if itโ€™s limited, plus, the production is idiomatic of hip-hop-infused pop.ย  Ultimately, on โ€œSavage Bop,โ€ Lewis oozes with personality and his songwriting style is incredibly entertaining.

11. Claud, โ€œWish You Were Gayโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œWish You Were Gayโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Claud โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Claud, "Wish You Were Gay" [๐Ÿ“ท: Claud]Sometimes, when a high profile, major label artist releases a song, you assume every song by other artists that follows it is a cover.ย  ๐ŸŽ™ Claud (Claudia Mintz) released their single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWish You Were Gayโ€ after ๐ŸŽ™ Billie Eilish released her own ๐ŸŽต โ€œWish You Were Gayโ€ from her Grammy-winning album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.ย  Clearly, these are two different songs from two very different artists, even if they share the same title.ย  Eilishโ€™s own record appears later on this gay-themed list but weโ€™ll show love to Claudโ€™s intriguing record here.

Claud tackles a prevalent issue in the LGBTQ+ community โ€“ falling in love with someone who is not gay.ย  Here, Claud longs for her love but knows that itโ€™s a long shot.ย  โ€œHoping that Iโ€™m a better replacement / For the guys that youโ€™re always out chasing,โ€ they sing on the first verse, continuing, โ€œOr should I accept things I canโ€™t change? / Hate it that I wish you were [gay].โ€ The chorus of this awesome ๐ŸŽผโœ Mintz and ๐ŸŽผโœ Doug Schadt penned track sums things up perfectly:

โ€œI wish you were gay so you could just hold me
Call me your babe instead of your homie

Shivum Sharma, "Diamond" [๐Ÿ“ท: Shivum Sharma]โ€œWhen you see the ground again / My Diamond in the sky,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Shivum Sharma sings radiantly on ๐ŸŽต โ€œDiamond,โ€ a must-hear, 2020 single from the southeast London artist.ย  He continues, โ€œWell, will you be found again / Blessed is your goodbye.โ€ Oh, the poetry of the chorus, and thatโ€™s a mere excerpt! Of โ€œDiamond,โ€ Sharma tells Daniel Megarry of Gay Times, โ€œDiamond is a tribute to the soft golden 70s soul Iโ€™ve grown up with.โ€

โ€œDiamondโ€ was written and produced by Sharma and ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Alex Burey.ย  The backdrop is dreamy and lush, a perfect match for Sharmaโ€™s expressive, nuanced voice.ย  The effect is one thatโ€™s soulful, yet in a sweet, โ€˜croonerโ€™ sort of way.ย  Sharma sounds particularly potent in his upper register โ€“ stunning (and sexy) to say the least.ย  In addition to the aforementioned excerpts from the chorus, the second verse is pretty sweet:

โ€œHe said, โ€˜Boy, you see my videos?โ€™
โ€˜Or we can leave our feelings at the doorโ€™
So, taken at the given cost
He gives me everything I need and more.โ€

In his feature in Gay Times, Sharma adds, โ€œAlthough itโ€™s a sad song, it carries a lot of sun with it.โ€ Indeed Shivum โ€“ itโ€™s definitely a diamond!ย

โ€œGay Street Fighterโ€ is quite ear catching to say the least with biting brass, infectious groove, and most importantly, the unapologetically G-A-Y lyrics from Lonsdale (โ€œIโ€™ll preach it louder for the back / The truth is (Everybody) / Everybodyโ€™s just a little bit gayโ€). Indeed, on this co-write/co-production with ๐ŸŽผโœ ๐ŸŽ› Tyler Minford he crafts a record where he doesnโ€™t give a fizzuck (๐Ÿ˜‚) what the haters say.ย  The chorus makes it crystal clear that the haters can kiss his a$$.

Stay tryna help you clean yo mess cause you done fuck it up
And even though you might not thank me for your happy life

According to Stereogum, who premiered the single, Tucker states โ€œโ€˜Gay Barโ€™ celebrates the incredible spectrum of characters dressed to impress at your average regional queer watering hole.โ€ Definitely sounds accurate judging the characterizations established lyrically.ย  There are a number of memorable lines such as personal favorites โ€œSaint Peter clad in leather / She was looking quite salaciousโ€ and, of course, โ€œCowboys dipped in glitter.โ€ Clearly, Tucker paints a picture where sheโ€™s in heaven โ€“ gay bar heaven!

The โ€˜hook-upโ€™ occurred with a straight guy (perhaps โ€˜questioningโ€™) and apparently, involves some nurturing from Mike.ย  โ€œHe was afraid / Tears streaming down his face,โ€ he sings on the second verse, adding on the third, โ€œI was proud to seem / Warm and mothering / Just for a night.โ€ Musically, the biggest triumph on โ€œJasonโ€ is Hadreasโ€™ falsetto โ€“ simply amazing.ย  From a sexual perspective, itโ€™s awesome to hear a scenario where a man still seems to be in the infancy stages of accepting and understanding his sexuality.

๐Ÿ’ฟ In a Dream (EP) โ€ข ๐Ÿทย Capitol โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Troye Sivan, In a Dream (EP) [๐Ÿ“ท: Capitol]๐ŸŽต โ€œRager teenager!โ€ is arguably the crowning achievement from ๐Ÿ’ฟ In a Dream (EP), the 2020 EP by South African/Australian pop sensation ๐ŸŽ™ Troye Sivan. ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ OZGO (Oscar Gรถrres) spoils us with his production skills with lovely warm pads, big, pummeling drums, and a great harmonic progression. Troyeโ€™s sound is โ€˜liberatedโ€™ throughout, particularly the pre-chorus and chorus. His vocals are top-notch, sounding incredibly masculine, expressive, and sexy simultaneously.

Examining key sections, the pre-chorus might be the best.ย  Itโ€™s more dynamic than the chorus, and establishes the โ€˜liberatedโ€™ sound:

โ€œI just wanna go wild
I just wanna fuck shit up and just ride
In your car tonight
In your bed tonight
I just wanna sing loud
I just wanna lose myself in a crowd
In your arms tonight
Or in his arms tonight.โ€

The pre-chorus is varied each time, keeping things fresh and providing variance. The chorus remains the same each time with no variation. Calmer, itโ€™s potent as well: โ€œHey, my lilโ€™ rager teenager / Tryna figure it outโ€ฆโ€. Besides those two sections, the instrumental outro is a nice touch. Great singing, great writing, and great production makes โ€œrager teenager!โ€ a gem.ย  The swear words also give it a little more pizzazz!

๐ŸŽต โ€œImagineโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021ย

Ben Platt, "Imagine" [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]Not enough folks partook of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Sing to Me Instead, the 2019 debut album by ๐ŸŽ™ Ben Platt. Of course, Platt had plenty of other success, including starring on ๐Ÿ“บ The Politician on Netflix.ย  For his sophomore album, however, the former ๐ŸŽญ Dear Evan Hansen star opts for a poppier sound, evidenced by single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œImagineโ€.

The key to any song that features Ben Platt in the leading role is that heโ€™s able to show how gifted he is as a vocalist.ย  Even with more modern sheen on the production end of things, โ€œImagineโ€ allows Platt to bless us with his prodigious pipes.ย  He has a marvelous tone, great range, and exhibits ample personality.ย  At first, I was slightly off put by the production and sound, but as โ€œImagineโ€ progresses, the pacing makes more sense, and Ben shows more passion, and assertiveness. Never in doubt is the songwriting, which is very personal for Platt and quite relatable.ย  Love is the theme โ€“ ever relatable.ย  Some of the best lyrics occur on the pre-chorus and chorus.ย  On the pre-chorus, Ben speaks of his partner, singing, โ€œYou say Iโ€™m your hero / But you are the one that saved me.โ€ Love it! Of course, the centerpiece, where Platt is really able to flex, is the chorus:

โ€œI canโ€™t imagine my life without you
I canโ€™t imagine one night without you
If something happened, donโ€™t know what Iโ€™d do
I canโ€™t imagine
I canโ€™t imagine, my life without you.โ€

Ultimately, โ€œImagineโ€ feels good, and, as always, Platt sings marvelously with a great topic/theme to work.

Sheโ€™s part of the ever-expanding LGBTQ+ musicians ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ delivering some truly fresh, compelling music.ย  If youโ€™re in need for a starting point for Parks, look no further than her latest bop, ๐ŸŽต โ€œCarolineโ€, set to appear on her 2021 debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Collapsed in Sunbeams.

โ€œI was waiting for the bus one day / Watched a fight between an artsy couple escalate,โ€ Arlo Parks sings on the first verse, continuing, โ€œStrawberry cheeks flushed with defeated rage / Then he spilled his coffee as he frantically explained.โ€ Clearly, the poetic nature of Parks is front and center from the start of โ€œCaroline.โ€ย  This narrative-driven songwriting is one of the biggest selling points. Written with ๐ŸŽผ โœ Gianluca Buccellati, Buccellati also produces ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ.ย  Musically, โ€œCarolineโ€ is a straight-up vibe.ย  The backdrop is simultaneously chill and soulful.ย  The same can be said of Parks, who sings with incredible ease, yet manages to pack a punch.ย  Her voice just sort of floats โ€“ definitely a desirable quality. All in all, โ€œCarolineโ€ is a triumph where the songwriting, narrativizes โ€œseeing situations unfold without context,โ€ and the music, melody, and vocal performance are all elite.ย  Throw in a memorable chorus and โ€œCarolineโ€ is indeed a surefire hit.

Apolloโ€™s style is quite eclectic (R&B, pop, rock, Latin), best characterized under the alternative umbrella. Like the song โ€œIโ€™m Amazingโ€ that commences Apolonio, โ€œBi Frenโ€ drips in swagger.ย  Also, obviously, it raises speculation regarding the musicianโ€™s sexuality, which he doesnโ€™t really address (nor does he have to). That said, thereโ€™s clearly some connection that Omar had with this guy, mumble approach to performing or not.

On the second verse, Omar asserts:

โ€œI still like him, I still like him
I used to drive around your block without no license
Separate you and your bitch, Iโ€™m not no hyphen
I hate your bitch, so I dipped out and jumped the high fence
He talking โ€˜bout hi friend, Iโ€™m talkinโ€™ bout bi friend.โ€

YUNGBLUD, weird! [๐Ÿ“ท : Interscope]Alternative musician ๐ŸŽ™ YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison) is โ€˜one of a kindโ€™ โ€“ understatement.ย  Whatโ€™s really cool about him is his absolute fearlessness.ย  Musically, heโ€™s quite aggressive, bringing ample punch.ย  As a person, heโ€™s unafraid to push the envelope, constantly challenging conformity.ย  ๐ŸŽต โ€œMarsโ€ appears as a highlight from his sophomore album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ weird!. โ€œMarsโ€ was written by YUNGBLUD and ๐ŸŽ™ Matt Schwartz, while itโ€™s produced by a team comprised of ๐ŸŽผ โœ Mike Crossey, ๐ŸŽผ โœ Chris Greatti, ๐ŸŽผ โœ Zakk Cervini, and ๐ŸŽผ โœ Omer Fedi.ย  The songwriting is notable, as Harrison imparts the tale of a transgender girl looking for acceptance, particularly from her parents.

Harrison highlights her struggles throughout the song.ย  On the first verse, he asserts, โ€œBut she canโ€™t be herself when sheโ€™s somebody else.โ€ย  On the second, he sings, โ€œYeah, her Mum and Dad, they couldnโ€™t understand / Why she couldnโ€™t turn it off, become a better man.โ€ He goes on to sing on the chorus her desires to โ€œgo to California / There everyone would adore her,โ€ given the progressiveness of the state.ย  The chorus, is simple but nothing short of awesome as he asks, โ€œIs there any life on Mars?โ€ The first thing that comes to mind given the title, chorus lyrics, and the bombastic nature of this song? David Bowie, of course, which is clearly intentional. YUNGBLUDโ€™s progressive spirit shines bright on โ€œMars.โ€ The beautiful message of the song is nothing short of awesome.ย  All boxes are checked off: production, songwriting, and vocals.

The production is definitely a selling point. The synths are colorful, filled with exuberance, making โ€œcomme des garรงonsโ€ sleek AF. Itโ€™s also a winner thanks to Dunbarโ€™s amazing voice and perhaps more strikingly, the lyrics. โ€œComme des garรงons (like the boys)โ€ is personal and thoughtful, finding Dunbar reflecting on identity issues while fiercely embracing nonconformity on the chorus:

โ€œI donโ€™t wanna be the same

That said, like ๐ŸŽ™ Davis Mallory on ๐ŸŽต โ€œShirtless,โ€ I can appreciate legitimate eye candy thatโ€™s being served up.ย  In this case, that eye candy is quite decadent from Malloryโ€™s perspective.ย  He appreciates the confidence of the hotties, definitely the view, and how that view makes him feel, if you catch my drift.ย  A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ, let me remind you that the singer, songwriter, and DJ previously appeared on ๐Ÿ“บ The Real World: Denver and The Challenge.

As expected, โ€œShirtlessโ€ features slick production work, courtesy of ๐ŸŽ› Joakim Buddee, who writes alongside Mallory.ย  The sound of the record is fittingly bright, energetic, and enthusiastic. Regardless of sexual preference, think about how you feel when you see someone whoโ€™s fine as hellโ€ฆ Thatโ€™s what โ€œShirtlessโ€ encapsulates.ย  The lyrics are โ€˜over the topโ€™ and dramatic, yet, when you think about it, weโ€™re all โ€˜over the top,โ€™ dramatic, and extra when it comes to crushes, fantasies, and such.ย  Sure, itโ€™s not the most poetic record, but there are some memorable moments lyrically including โ€œAll of your muscles and your veins / Oh, theyโ€™re driving me insane / Raise my hands and singing praise / Thanking God for what he made / And the sunโ€™s out / And your guns out.โ€ Jesus!

โ€œPay Your Way in Painโ€ commences with sort of this cabaret sound โ€“throwback in quality. Soon enough, it transforms into this adventurous joint with a blend of funk and electronic cues.ย  This quirky number is definitely alternative through and through. If nothing else, St. Vincent delivers an ear catching record that doesnโ€™t conform in any way, shape, or fashion.ย  I love the playful ways that she uses her voice here. The songwriting is also intriguing, telling a compelling story, characteristic of the artistโ€™s music of the past. Specifically, the character seems to be facing plenty of pain as the adversity is through the roof from lack of money, being judged, becoming homeless โ€“ itโ€™s a lot! โ€œPay Your Way in Painโ€ is quirky as albeit and we wouldnโ€™t have it any other way.

26. The 1975, โ€œJesus Christ 2005 God Bless Americaโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Notes on a Conditional Form โ€ข ๐Ÿท Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

The 1975, Notes on a Conditional Form [๐Ÿ“ท: Interscope]โ€œIโ€™m in love with Jesus Christ / Heโ€™s so nice.โ€ย  Honestly, a lot of people are ๐ŸŽ™ Matthew Healy, but we all know that you are an atheist/secular humanist, soโ€ฆ what gives?ย  Perhaps the front man of ๐ŸŽ™ The 1975 actually isnโ€™t speaking about his religious beliefs as much as the character he portrays on ๐ŸŽต โ€œJesus Christ 2005 God Bless Americaโ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Notes on a Conditional Form). Featuring uncredited vocals by ๐ŸŽ™ Phoebe Bridgers, โ€œJesus Christ 2005 God Bless Americaโ€ tackles faith and sexuality.

So, the opening lyric from โ€œJesus Christ 2005 God Bless Americanโ€ comes off incredibly spiritual โ€“ quite Christian.ย  However, the issue comes into play on the second verse, with Bridgers assisting: โ€œIโ€™m in love with a boy I know / But thatโ€™s a feeling I can never show.โ€ย  Why canโ€™t he show it? Well, thereโ€™s been plenty of friction between being homosexual and Christian. Often, Sodom and Gomorrah are cited in the purported sin.ย  Of course, the phrase โ€œAdam and Eve, Not Adam and Steveโ€ predates those โ€˜sinfulโ€™ happenings in Sodom and Gomorrah.ย  Back to the song though!

Bridgers has her own moment where sexuality comes to the forefront:

โ€œIโ€™m in love with the girl next door
Her nameโ€™s Claire
Nice when she comes โ€˜round to call
Then masturbate the second sheโ€™s not there.โ€

Wow.ย  Of course, because both Healy and Bridgers are Christian (in the context) of the song, โ€˜itโ€™s all goodโ€™ โ€“ NOT. The chorus is clearly the centerpiece of this alternative, singer/songwriter record.

โ€œFortunately, I believe, lucky me
Searching for planes in the sea, and thatโ€™s irony
Soil just needs water to be, and a seed
So, if we can turn into a tree, can I be the leaves?โ€

Examine the song further, and thereโ€™s another Biblical allusion to Faith being like a mustard seed.ย  Here, you can argue that Healy desires faith that he doesnโ€™t possess, while simultaneously, captures the plight of the gay Christian who is essentially a walking contradiction. The song has a lot to unpack, but itโ€™s definitely a worthwhile listen thatโ€™s worth discussing.

Shamir, Shamir [๐Ÿ“ท : Shamir]โ€œI used to think that love was fleeting / Youโ€™ll just end up hurt / But itโ€™s a cosmic game of meetings / That may never workโ€ฆโ€ A prime example of a gem arriving in the turbulence that is 2020 is ๐ŸŽต โ€œOn My Ownโ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Shamir) an intriguing, expressive rock record by Shamir Bailey, better known as ๐ŸŽ™ Shamir.ย  The nonbinary musician is definitely โ€˜one of a kind,โ€™ with a truly distinct, powerful set of pipes.

Perhaps Shamir is markedly different from anyone that you know personally or have ever met, but the theme and lyrics of โ€œOn My Ownโ€ are quite relatable.ย  The theme is, the plight of love/ being alone.ย  Yep, thatโ€™s a theme that always works, and the expressive singer nails it.ย  Worth noting, when discussing the song, Shamir tells Rolling Stone about a new angle it takes, given the pandemic: โ€œโ€ฆConsidering the pandemic, [โ€œOn My Ownโ€] โ€ฆ morphed into an accidental quarantine anthem, especially for the people who live alone like me.โ€ย  The aforementioned lyrics kick off โ€œOn My Own,โ€ following an energetic intro that sets the tone of the song.ย  From there, Bailey embraces being alone:

โ€œI donโ€™t mind to live all on my own
And I never did
And I donโ€™t care to feel like I belong
But you always did.โ€

Independent, following a breakup, Shamir does reflect on the possibilities for love in the future, but he also understands he doesnโ€™t need it, particularly if it isnโ€™t worth it, ultimately.ย  Of course, he does so with a kick ass, rhythmic, guitar-heavy backdrop (๐ŸŽ› Kyle Pulley does a superb with the production btw), and top-notch, upper-register pipes.

Lambert is a bit upset on โ€œRosesโ€ though.ย  Why? Well, he received ROSES but sans emotion โ€“ matters of the heart!

โ€œAnd all that I got was roses
Donโ€™t mean a thing without emotions
Baby, just do it right, focus
โ€˜Cause I just needed your love tonight, tonight, tonight.โ€

Basically, Lambert wants more of an emotional connection, so much so that on the second verse he asks:

โ€œIs it love or are we just fuckinโ€™?
Tell me, baby, you canโ€™t keep me waiting.โ€

29. Years & Years, โ€œStarstruckโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œStarstruckโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Polydor โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Years & Years, "Starstruck" [๐Ÿ“ท: Polydor]Once a three-person collective, ๐ŸŽ™ Years & Years vis now a solo act by front man ๐ŸŽ™ Olly Alexander. Despite the changes, Olly has totally got us ๐ŸŽต โ€œStarstruckโ€ with his new single. โ€œStarstruckโ€ was written by Alexander alongside ๐ŸŽผโœ Clarence Coffee Jr., ๐ŸŽผโœ Mark Ralph, and ๐ŸŽผโœ Nathaniel Ledwidge.ย  Ralph and Ledwidge produce this bright sounding, energetic pop cut. With a great backdrop behind him, Olly delivers assertive vocals that are colorful, nuanced, and filled with personality.ย  His tone is absolutely stunning.

In addition to his singing, Olly โ€˜puts in some workโ€™ with his pen, delivering some fun lyrics (โ€œIf I could bottle you up / I would sip ya like cosmic juiceโ€). Of course, the centerpiece is none other than the chorus which is hella catchy.ย  Furthermore, the brightness ascends to an even higher level.

โ€œI canโ€™t help it
I get starstruck around you
What can I do baby?โ€

Quite a relatable sentiment by all means.ย  In addition to the love-centric lyrics, โ€œStarstruckโ€ is well organized in regard to form.ย  Years & Years keeps it standard with verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and later, a breakdown section, which serves as a bridge essentially (โ€œStarstruck / Not giving you upโ€). Down two members? No problem for Years & Years, who continues to bring the heat on โ€œStarstruck.โ€ All boxes are checked off:ย  strong vocals, catchy songwriting, and ear catching production.

30. Kesha, โ€œBFFโ€

Ft. Wrabel

๐Ÿ’ฟ High Road โ€ข ๐Ÿท Kemosabe โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Kesha, High Road [๐Ÿ“ท: Kemosabe]๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated pop artist ๐ŸŽ™ Kesha brought ample spirit, energy (and f-bombs as well) on her colorful fourth studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ High Road. One of my personal favorites from High Road is ๐ŸŽต โ€œBFFโ€ featuring ๐ŸŽ™ Wrabel.ย  Worth noting, Kesha identifies as bi, while Wrabel identifies as gay.ย  This dynamic plays a role in this particular songโ€ฆ

โ€œBFFโ€ may not eclipse the most elite numbers from High Road, but the concept is more of a rarity than commonplace, musically speaking.ย  On this ๐ŸŽ™ Stuart Crichton production, Kesha sings about her best friend, who happens to be gay (see the connection).

โ€œIโ€™m callinโ€™ up my best friend, can we just hang out tonight?
Neither of our boyfriends are even invited
When Iโ€™m with my best friend, I feel like myself again
Always make me laugh until Iโ€™m cryinโ€™.โ€

Both artists reminisce about their many times together as friends, exhibiting their support and dedication for one another.ย  That dedication includes one of the most memorable lyrics, courtesy of Wrabel:

โ€œI knew you were nervous, and I thought itโ€™d make you laugh
So, I sent you a bag of candy dicks.โ€

Now thatโ€™s #Friendship + a pretty sweet LGBTQ+ bop.
