MNEK, Language [Photo Credit: Virgin]MNEK shines on his colorful, quirky, and thoughtful new socially-conscious record, “Crazy World,” and advance single from his debut LP, ‘Language.’

“Do you belong? / Somewhere in this crazy world.” The topic of the troubles of the world is nothing new in music.  Nonetheless, MNEK works wonder with this oft-used theme on his intriguing new single, “Crazy World.” “Crazy World” serves as the fourth advance single from the British pop musician’s debut album, Language (September 7, 2018).

“Crazy World” features unique, quirky, and somewhat gimmicky production.  The record sounds different from the norm, keeping things both fresh and interesting.  “Crazy World” features a busy groove, colorful synths, and epic backing vocals.  This is a fantastic vocal performance by MNEK. He sounds distinct, pure, soulful, and beautiful.  One of his best moments arrives on the third verse, where he delivers those sensational and expressive runs.

Beyond the execution of the production and vocals, there are some key lyrics focusing on violence, racism, and homophobia. On the first verse, MNEK sings, “They’re wondering why everything is so messed up / Orlando to Beijing and everywhere in between.” On the second, he shifts to racism: “A man is told he’s committed a sin… All because of the color of his skin.”  On the third and most dynamic, he focuses on sexuality: “A father is disappointed by his son… He’s told him that he’s in love with someone /… He’s coming out, he can’t keep it in.”

Final Thoughts

As aforementioned, “Crazy World” is a quirky single by MNEK.  That said, it works superbly.  The social references are killer, MNEK sounds fantastic, and the production is unique and colorful. Language is bound to be a special album.
