“Lady love, your love is peaceful / Like the summer’s breeze,”
multifaceted musician Lou Rawls (1933 – 2006) sings on his hit, “Lady Love”. Rawls continues, “My lady love, with love that’s tender / As a baby’s touch.” Ooh-wee! “Lady Love” is the opening track from the three-time Grammy-winner’s 1977 gold-certified album, When You Hear Lou, You’ve Heard It All.  A success on the pop charts, it peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, the album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. “Lady Love” was written by Sherman Marshall and Von Gray. Gray produced it with arranger Jack Faith.

“Lady Love” is the crème de la crème of When You Hear Lou, You’ve Heard It All, PERIOD. It starts with the high-flying music itself.  Divine, “Lady Love” features sensational orchestration (Faith) and production. The horns are bright and provide bite while the strings are lush and warm to the nth degree. The percussion (congas) and drums provide a formidable, rhythmic foundation. The groove is EVERYTHING.  The music is awesome, and so are the expressive, refined baritone vocals of Lou Rawls. His voice was truly one of a kind.  While he never breaks a sweat, Rawls is assertive and gritty without ever overdoing it. He gets a lift from the background vocals, even though he does the heavy lifting. Throughout, there are marvelous melodies and catchy, memorable lyrics. “Lady love, your love is cooling / Like the winter snow,” he sings, and continues, lovingly, “My lady love, with love that’s cozy / As a fire’s glow.”  Matters of the heart drive and excel on “Lady Love”. To reiterate, this song cooks thanks to Lou’s fantastic baritone, radiant orchestration and production, and memorable, thoughtful, and well-rounded songwriting.
