After delivering a superb debut album (Under Pressure), Logic follows it up with another incredible LP with The Incredible True Story.
Duplicating the critical success of a particularly awesome album is difficult. In Maryland MC Logicâs case, his debut Under Pressure was nothing short of terrific, if commercially underrated. Considering the favorable ratings for Under Pressure, it is amazing that Logic delivers another superb effort with sophomore album, The Incredible True Story. Give Logic credit for putting together am ambitious, conceptual effort. Even if its concept itself doesnât woo, its best material is sure to captivate.
âContactâ
Intro âContactâ establishes the concept, looking back upon Logicâs debut and looking forward to The Incredible True Story. The intro sets up standout âFade Away,â where Logic spits, âFade away, fade away / They gonâ know my name until it fade awayâŚâ Logicâs flow is crazy â fast-paced, motor-mouthed, and undeniably awesome. âI been there, I done that this rap shit I run that,â Logic boasts upon the first verse. He continues, rapping, âMotherfucker this far from a comeback, if one of us fall then we run back.â âFade Awayâ contains a skit at its conclusion, again connecting to the forthcoming track, âUpgradeâ in this instance.
âUpgradeâ unsurprisingly references Logicâs âcome up,â a favorite subject for him and almost every other MC in the game. While itâs appealing, the real heat comes with the one-two punch of âLike Woahâ and âYoung Jesusâ (featuring Big Lenbo), following scene âWhite People.â âLike Woahâ is smooth â soulful and throwback in regards to its production work. Itâs âall hail Logicâ as he asserts himself to be âPlatinum in this bitchâŚrunning the game.â He goes on to brag, âBack up in this motherfucker livinâ like a goddamn king / Tell me money ainât a thing now.â
âYoung Jesusâ
âYoung Jesusâ is arguably the best song from The Incredible True Story. Truly exemplifying Logicâs âtake âem back to the 90s!â shout out, Logic is on fire, whether heâs referencing Dennis the Menace, avoiding early fatherhood or cannibals among other things. The way he and Big Lenbo trade bars â kickass.
Things certainly donât fall off after âYoung Jesus.â âInnermissionâ (featuring Lucy Rose) shows candid Logic, spitting at one point,
âMy situation at home was alcoholics and drugs I never graduated but I made it to the summit Donât get me wrong, so many times I thought I would plummet Ffelt like I didnât have the heart and couldnât seem to stomach.â
âI Am The Greatestâ has more bite â itâs as aggressive as a four-letter word: âMotherfuckers get no love!â Explicit, unapologetic, and hard as albeit, âI Am The Greatestâ ranks among the crème de la crème. âLord Willinââ continues to find Logic in his zone, while âCity Of Starsâ is a lushly produced, mostly sung song. According to a tweet by the MC, he is breaking up with the preconceived notions of what hip-hop should be. Itâs not all singing, though â by the end, heâs a rapping machine once again.
âStainlessâ
If âCity of Starsâ doesnât do it, âStainlessâ (featuring Dria) should. Biting, emotional rhymes never seem to fail, starting with the aggressive opening salvo,
âMotherfuckers wanna get famous Bust guns and get dangerous Daddy graduated from Cambridge Money talks in every language.â
Logic doesnât stop there, referencing his own father at one point: âIf you go do like my daddy then she gonna be single and aloneâŚâ âParadiseâ is divided into two parts, with part two arguably being most impressive with its strings, not to mention a sharp reference to Erykah Badu. âNever Beenâ is another sound cut with throwback written all over. âRun Itâ eclipses both with Logic once more embracing and asserting his badass persona: âWho else you know wanna come up, do it like I does it?â
After the âLucidityâ scene, âThe Incredible True Storyâ concludes in superb fashion.
âMake music like thereâs no Grammy For the last line they might ban me I donât give a fuck though Cause I am me...â
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, The Incredible True Story is rock solid from start to finish. Whether it gains Logic more sales is debatable, but the quality is indisputable. Logic is clearly among the better rappers in the rap game, period. The Incredible True Story confirms such.
