Lil Peep vs. An Argency: Head 2 Head No. 6 (2024) [📷: Brent Faulkner / The Musical Hype; An Argency, Lil Peep; Hernán Toro, Los Muertos Crew, RDNE Stock project, Thomas Ronveaux from Pexels]In the 6th edition of Head 2 Head (2024), Lil Peep and An Argency contend for the best rendition of “Benz Truck.”

Welcome to Head 2 Head! On Head 2 Head, we pit at least two musicians performing the same song, comparing their respective performances.  Then, after much deliberation, we deliver a verdict of which performance was the best, or at least, subjectively, which performance moved us more.  In the 6th edition of Head 2 Head (2024), Lil Peep and An Argency contend for the best rendition of “Benz Truck”. So, without further ado, let the Head 2 Head commence!

1. Lil Peep, “Benz Truck (Гелик)”

💿 Come over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1🏷 Lil Peep • 📅 2017

Lil Peep, Come Over When You're Sober Pt. 1 [📷: Lil Peep / AUTNMY]“Lil Bo Peep with a brand-new bitch / In the back of the club with the GothBoiClique / Iced out teeth on an iced-out whip / With the limousine tints, you can suck my dick.” Woo! It is tragic that Lil Peep (Gustav Åhr) died at only 21 years old.  As a rapper and singer, he brought a unique style and aesthetic to hip-hop. Furthermore, he was interesting in regards to his background, personality, sexuality,  and, most noticeably, his abundance of body ink. While alive, most of the world only got a taste of artistry, with his 2017 EP/mini album, Come over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 showcasing his potential. “Benz Truck (Гелик)” was among the songs to beat. It was produced by smokeasac.

“Friends switch up when you in a Benz truck

Always wanna fuck, tell a bitch, ‘Good luck’

Always wanna fuck ‘cause I just came up

Drugs in my nose, good drugs in my cup.”

Sure,  the verse isn’t particularly deep, but the vibe is quite compelling. Mercedes Benz is a luxury brand – truly elite automobiles.  For Lil Peep, the Benz truck represents his come up in the rap game. R.I.P. Gustav Åhr.

2. An Argency, “Benz Truck”

🎵 “Benz Truck” • 🗓 2018

An Argency [📷: An Argency]Lil Mirosh with a brand new bitch In the back of the club with the goth boy clique / Iced out teeth / On a iced out whip / With the limousine tints so you can suck my dick.” Ooh wee! With the exception of ‘Lil Mirosh,’ those lyrics were original melodically rapped by the late Lil Peep, who was also part of the collective, GothBoi Clique. “Benz Truck (Гелик)” ranks among the rapper’s most popular songs ( “Awful Things” takes top honors).  Belarus rock/metal band An Argency takes on the tall task of covering the 2017 emo-rap gem in 2018.  It’s safe to say, in the hands of Lil Mirosh and An Argency, the metal rendition of  “Benz Truck” rocks 🤘!

Those dark, minor key guitar riffs set the foreboding tone.  However, while the chorus remains catchy, Lil Mirosh is less melodic than Lil Peep, beginning the metal transformation with gritty, unsettling vocals. This cover goes hard – heavy, heavy, heavy! The second iteration of the chorus is wild, with no pitch to be found – those unclean vocals, baby! The verse is even wilder, with the angst at an all-time high, not to mention filthy vocals accompanied by equally filthy, nasty guitars! The intense lyrics and even more intense performance is IN YOUR FACE: “I don’t wanna wait now / But I know you gonna make me / Who you wanna hate now? / Pretty soon you’re gonna hate me.”  The energy is lit 🔥 – it’s hard to catch your breath listening to this one. That said, at the end, the final lyrics, “Suck my dick,” get a more melodic, kinder, gentler treatment after ample intensity.  Go figure! An Argency pays ode to the late musician sensationally.

The Verdict 👨🏿‍⚖️

So, here’s the moment of truth.  Who performed it better? Was it the original, “Benz Truck (Гелик)” by the late, great, GothboiClique standout, Lil Peep or the heavy, angst-filled cover courtesy of An Argency?  Lil Mirosh and An Argency ‘kick ass and takes names’ with their metal rendition of of this emo-rap joint BUT “Benz Truck” will forever belong to the one and only Lil Peep.  Gustav Åhr died far too young 😢, but he left a surefire banger with this joint right here!
