The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 84th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Got Theโ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Labi Siffre.ย

Labi Siffre, Remember My Song [๐Ÿ“ท: Parlophone]โ€œI got the blues, but I donโ€™t mind,โ€ British singer, songwriter, and poet ๐ŸŽ™ Labi Siffre asserts on his classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Got Theโ€. โ€œI Got Theโ€ appears as the opening track from his 1975 LP, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Remember My Song. The underrated, genre-bending musician often encompasses folk, jazz, pop, and soul.ย  In the case of โ€œI Got The,โ€ it is a soul joint. He continues singing in the first verse, โ€œAll I have to do is get to you / And then I feel just fine.โ€ย  So, even though he gets down, this person, or perhaps substance (see the rest of the verse), lifts him higher.ย  Given Siffreโ€™s knack for poetry, itโ€™s unsurprising that the lyrics are so compelling.ย  Notably, the first part of the record features a more lush sounding backdrop.ย  Eventually, things shift to the most famous instrumental portion of the song, the one that ๐ŸŽ™ Eminem sampled in his rap classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œMy Name Isโ€.ย

Siffre, who penned โ€œI Got Theโ€ ultimately signed off on Eminem sampling his classic, but itโ€™s a bit surprising.ย  Labi is gay, and at the time, Eminem was extremely raw โ€“ f-slurs and ample controversy.ย  Notably, if you interpret โ€œI Got Theโ€ as being addressed to a person, Siffre avoids specific pronouns.ย  Per a fabulous article penned by Tim Jonze for The Guardian, this was intentional:ย

By his third album โ€“ Crying Laughing Loving Lying โ€“ Siffreโ€™s lyrics were no longer written as if for the opposite sex. โ€œIt occurred to me that I couldnโ€™t do that any more,โ€ he says.ย

classicNotably, the pronouns arenโ€™t important โ€“ the effect of fulfillment is sufficiently captured with You. Through the course of this six-and-a-half-minute gem, Siffre shows utter musical genius.ย  His vocals are silky smooth, while the lyrics are potent.ย  Furthermore, the production โ€“ ๐ŸŽ› Big Jim Sullivan and Derek Lawrence โ€“ stupendous. If you have somehow neglected ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Got Theโ€ in your soul, vintage music rotation, it is time to right that wrong โ€“ itโ€™s marvelous!ย
