Kris Wu, Like That © InterscopeRising Chinese musician and actor Kris Wu sounds buttery smooth on his latest urban-contemporary/pop-rap single, “Like That.”

Chinese musician-actor Kris Wu crossed my radar back in late 2017 with his single, “B.M.”. Musically, Wu rightfully identifies as an urban artist – R&B and rap – but has previously been a member of a boyband.  After collaborating with Rich Brian and Joji on single “18”, Wu returns solo on the simply-titled single, “Like That.”

The biggest takeaway from “Like That” is how smooth Kris Wu sounds.  Mostly singing, though incorporating some pop-rap, he sounds as ‘smooth as butter.’ Need a great comparison as to how he sounds – look no further than Canadian superstar Drake.  Clearly, Aubrey Graham is an influence in some capacity.  Wu’s buttery smooth, rhythmic-melodic vocals match the easy-going, lush, luxurious-sounding backdrop.  With ample lushness, the motion of the production is created mostly via the drum programming, which trends on the subtler side of the spectrum as opposed to being hardnosed or overt.  The chorus is the centerpiece of the record.  It’s certainly not deep, but Wu expresses his feelings:

“I ain’t never seen a girl like that

Tell me if we take a chance like that

Got me spending all my cash like that

Keep on doing what I like like that.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Like That” is a light-hearted, pleasant single from Kris Wu.  The 27-year old proves he has some swagger. Is this game changing? Not by any means, but Wu is definitely worth checking out.
