“Joanna, I love you / You’re the one, the one for me.” Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame R&B/funk collective Kool & the Gang excelled at making hits.  Among their best hits is “Joanna.” “Joanna” is the second track on their 1983 album, In the Heart. How successful was it on the pop charts? It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single gold. Jim Bonnefond, Ronald Bell, Robert Bell, J.T. Taylor, Claydes Smith, George Brown, Curtis Fitzgerald Williams, and Clifford Adams composed it.  Kool & The Gang, Jim Bonnefond, and Ronald Bell produced it.

The driving, rhythmic vibes are everything.  It features colorful production and an intriguing sound palette.  Highlights include the prominent bass line, guitar riffs, and horns. A nerdy selling point? The harmonic progression. Perhaps the biggest selling point is the high-flying vocals by J.T. Taylor. His vocals are expressive, nuanced, and ooze with soul. The lyrics are memorable while the melodies are tuneful. “I’m in love, and I won’t lie / She’s my girl and always on my mind,” Taylor sings in the first verse, and continues, “She gives me her love, and a feeling that’s right / Never lets me down, especially at night.” In the second verse, he asserts, “I’m promising you, take it from me / Take it home, baby, take it home, baby.” In the pre-chorus, there’s no doubt: “She’s the one, the one for me.” The chorus, excerpted earlier, is the centerpiece.  The bridge brings musical contrast, while the lyrics are simple: “Ooh, Joanna.” Ultimately, “Joanna” is another surefire classic from Kool & The Gang. Strong vocals, memorable songwriting, and vibrant production make this a winner.
