Grammy-winning saxophonist Kenny G (Kenny Gorelick) is polarizing, at least to many jazz musicians. Regardless, the talented musician has earned plenty of success. His biggest hit is “Songbird.” “Songbird” opens his Grammy-nominated 1986 album, Duotones. How big was this song? It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single gold in 2022. That is impressive for an instrumental composition! Kenny G composed “Songbird.” Preston Glass produced it, with co-production by Kenny G.
“Songbird” is a vibe from the get-go. The arrangement is smooth. Synthesizers provide harmony and superb rhythmic lines. Kenny G is the star of the show. He carries the radiant melodies passionately via soprano saxophone 🤩. As G plays, he’s smooth as butter. Most of the time, it sounds as if he barely breaks a sweat. He plays every note tenderly, with care. ‘Buttoned up’ and refined most of the time, G does let loose with some impressive runs. Still, even when “Songbird” has more ‘frenzy,’ Kenny never loses his composure. There’s still control, poise, and a cool energy. “Songbird” speaks for itself. This is Kenny G at his best, no matter what the haters have to say!
