“They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
Eww, gross! Legendary Canadian folk singer-songwriter elaborates on her beloved classic, “Big Yellow Taxi”: “With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swingin’ hot spot.”  Early on, it’s clear that mankind is harming the planet, destroying natural beauty for far less important, meaningless things.  A parking lot, really? “Big Yellow Taxi” is the 10th track on her 1970 platinum-certified album, Ladies of the Canyon.  A top 40 hit for Mitchell, “Taxi” peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mitchell wrote and produced it.

Mitchell continues to criticize humans’ decisions as “Big Yellow Taxi” progresses.  Capitalism rears its head in the second verse, where trees are replaced with a tree museum, and charged to see them 👀!  In the third verse, insecticides draw Joni’s ire: “Give me spots on my apples / But leave me the birds and the bees, please.” The fourth and final verse is the least clear, but some “old man” exits Mitchell’s life (“And a big yellow taxi took away my old man”).  As awesome as the verses are, the chorus is the crème de la crème, in its memorable, tuneful, and unforgettable glory:

“Don’t it always seem to go

That you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone

They paved paradise, put up a parking lot

(Shoo-bop-bop-bop-bop

Shoo-bop-bop-bop-bop).”

Throughout “Big Yellow Taxi,” Joni Mitchell delivers; she brings it. Her vocal performance is authentic, beautiful, and commanding but easygoing.  The production is simple – not too much.  Supported by assertive acoustic guitar, percussion, and background vocals, this song is incredible without being flashy.  Sound and powerful thanks to a prudent message, Joni did her ‘big one,’ PERIOD!
