In the 84^th edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “BABIECA!,” performed by Spanish singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente.

All music genres are welcome. Songs, old and new, are welcome as well. So, without further ado, in the 84^th edition of Beaming with Pride (2026), we highlight “BABIECA!” performed by Guitarricadelafuente.

Oh, Guitarricadelafuente (Álvaro Lafuente Calvo) – what a beautiful, talented Spanish 🇪🇸 musician and actor.  Those lyrics hail from “BABIECA!” which opens his 2025 album, Spanish Leather.  Translated to English, Álvaro sings in the back half of the pre-chorus, “It’s on prime-time news / Your caresses are going to kill me / I have the power today, the delight / I lose control on the floor.”  Noted. So, what is a babieca, exactly? As a noun, in Spanish, it’s a dolt; a dumb/stupid person.  As an adjective, the dumbness remains part of the equation –  simpleminded; stupid.  Also, Babieca was a legendary warhorse of the medieval Castilian knight, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, aka El Cid (c. 1043 – 1099). Though the title’s a negative word, it’s not a dumb song at all.  Guitarricadelafuente composed “BABIECA!” with Jasper Harris, Pablo Drexler, Carter Lang, and Lucas Durán Forga. Xavi Veres and Jordi Pareta arranged it. Guitarricadelafuente, Jasper Harris, Carter Lang, and pablopablo (Drexler) produced it.

“BABIECA!” commences with warm, rich opening strings. In addition to strings, the keys, acoustic guitar, and programming are sweet.  The sounds catch the ear, including an awesome syncopated beat. Beyond the top-notch arrangement and production, the star of the show is Álvaro – Guitarricadelafuente! The gifted singer-songwriter delivers a beautiful, expressive vocal performance.  His tone is everything! Even if you don’t catch or comprehend everything he sings (it’s performed exclusively in Spanish), it’s an incredibly melodious song. A big theme is falling in love. According to Rolling Stone, it was “inspired by a nightclub where Guitarricadelafuente’s parents met.” In the chorus, Álvaro sings:

“Me sube la flor de tu perfume La vida te consume Bailé y me entretuve; es mi condena.”

“The scent of your perfume hits me Life consumes you I danced and got sidetracked; it’s my fate.”

The bridge also sheds light on the complicated nature of love.

“Nadie va a permanecer a la espera Deja ya de perseguir esa estela Tan fugaz que se ha incendiado Con la espuela en el costado Se termina el carnaval, te lo bebes de un trago Y salimos sin pagar.”

“No one’s going to stay and wait around Quit chasing that wake So fleeting that it’s caught fire With a spur on its side The carnival comes to an end, you drink it all away And we left without paying.”

Ultimately, “BABIECA!” is a surefire bop.  It is a marvelous way to begin Spanish Leather and a highlight from the singer-songwriter’s career to date.  Great vocals, songwriting, and production make this one a winner.
