Can you feel those vibes, those surefire Throwback Vibez?! Throwback Vibez is a recurring column devoted to celebrating incredible songs from the past. An oldie can pump you up and put a smile on your face! The songs featured here highlight musical gems from the 20th century with occasional exceptions. All genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 106th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Lately,” performed by Jodeci.

“Lately, I’ve had the strangest feeling / With no vivid reason here to find.”
R&B quartet Jodeci earned their fair share of success in the 1990s. Two multi-platinum albums and one platinum album are no joke! Who are Jodeci? Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey, Joel “JoJo” Hailey, Donald “DeVante Swing” DeGrate Jr., and Dalvin “Mr. Dalvin” DeGrate.  Interestingly, their biggest hit is a Stevie Wonder cover, “Lately.” The gold-certified hit appears on the 1993 album, Uptown MTV Unplugged. The live recording also appears on Back to the Future: The Very Best Of Jodeci, released in 2005.  A studio version appeared on their 2026 greatest hits compilation, Always, Forever, Jodeci. “Lately” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the quartet their biggest hit.  Fun fact: it eclipsed Wonder’s modest number 64 peak on the pop charts 🤯!

Various Artists, Uptown MTV Unplugged [📷: UMG Recordings, Inc.]It can be an arduous task to make a cover sound like your own.  It’s even more arduous when you are covering a Stevie Wonder classic.  Jodeci is up to the task!  There is no rush on “Lately”; Jodeci takes their time, juicing every single note and lyric.  K-Ci and JoJo sing it at the end of the quartet’s set on Uptown MTV Unplugged. They provide an authentic, nuanced, and soulful vocal performance: great tone, divine runs, and marvelous synergy. They are accompanied primarily by piano initially. During the second verse, the band asserts itself:  guitar, bass, drums, and drum programming. Still, the sound and vibe remain unplugged. K-Ci and JoJo remain the stars, particularly when they let loose, giving “Lately” plenty of juice, oomph, and punch. They make this rendition their own. Best experienced by listening rather than analyzing and commenting, Jodeci does their big one on “Lately.” This epic K-Ci & JoJo performance predates the biggest moment of their career, “All My Life”.
