hen we think of π Jennifer Lopez, first and foremost, we think J. Lo or π΅ βJenny from the Blockβ.Β Sure, itβs been years since those days, but Lopez remains a fixture of pop culture, NO CAP.Β She returns with π΅ βOn My Way (Marry Me)β, a single from the film π¦ Marry Me.Β Surprisingly, rather than serve up a catchy, dance-pop/R&B-infused joint, Lopez gives us an adult contemporary pop ballad! To quote Logic, π΅ βLike Woahβ!The writing team for βOn My Way (Marry Me)β includes Β πΌβ Leroy Clampitt, and πΌβ Michael Pollack. As far as production, π Keith Hetrick and π Trevor Muzzy handle the boards. βOn My Wayβ commences with piano, clearly a different βbackdropβ for J. Lo! Despite an about face (to be fair, sheβs sung ballads many times), Lopez sings beautifully.Β Her tone is well-suited for this record, and she achieves the right feels.Β My favorite moment, unsurprisingly, is the chorus, which features the best songwriting and vocals:
βAnd every heartbreak was a yellow brick road Pointing me straight, just taking me home I was never lost; I was just passing through I was on my way to you.β
At nearly two minutes in, βOn My Wayβ picks up the pace, thanks to pummeling drums. Even with an increase in pace, it doesnβt stray too far from adult contemporary pop. Lopez serves up some nice nuances and ad-libs, including a little falsetto (for lack of a better word).
Final Thoughts π
All in all, βOn My Way (Marry Me)β is a respectable, well-rounded ballad from Jennifer Lopez.Β She sings well, and both writing, and production get the job done. No, the wheel isnβt reinvented, but this works.
