Ah, let the Face Off begin! The sun has set on Head 2 Head (2021 – 2025), but the musical competition has “only just begun”, Karen Carpenter! In Face Off, musicians compete to determine who delivered the best version of a song. In most cases, the musicians are performing the same song or a remix, rearrangement, or variation of the song.  Each performance will be evaluated for vocal or instrumental performance, production, and so on and so forth. After blurbing about each performance, I will briefly deliberate and deliver a verdict about who wins the Face Off.  Draws and ties are acceptable, but in most cases, one band, group, or musician will get the edge. In the 12th  edition of Face Off (2026), Jeffrey Osborne and Regine Velasquez face off for the best rendition of “On The Wings of Love.” May the best musician win!

Deliberation Verdict

1. Jeffrey Osborne, “On The Wings of Love”

Jeffrey Osborne » UMG Recordings, Inc. » 1982

Jeffrey Osborne, Jeffrey Osborne [📷: UMG Recordings]As a solo artist, R&B singer-songwriter Jeffrey Osborne (b. 1948) experienced the bulk of his success in the 1980s. One of his biggest hits during his most lucrative period was “On the Wings of Love”.  The R&B gem appeared on Osborne’s 1982 self-titled debut album. Osborne and Peter Schless wrote this brilliant pop hit, which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. The late, great George Duke (1946 – 2013) produced it.

There are so many pros to adore about this classic. Beginning with Osborne, he sounds stunning.  He never over-sings, displaying finesse and refinement while also being incredibly expressive and nuanced. The song is perfectly suited for him. Besides the vocals, the lyrics are beautiful, drenched in L-O-V-E and built upon chivalry. The crowning achievement, of course, is the chorus:

“On the wings of love
Up and above the clouds
The only way to fly
Is on the wings of love
On the wings of love
Only the two of us
Together flying high
Flying high up on the wings of love.”

Gorgeous! The production by Duke and the musical accompaniment are on point. The sounds that stand out include standard R&B/pop instrumentation, as well as strings. Those strings amplify the elegance and signal romance. “On the Wings of Love” is a classic that does not require extensive analysis or commentary – it speaks for itself. How was this high-flying gem NOT nominated for a Grammy? Jeffrey Osborne did his big one!

2. Regine Velasquez, “On The Wings of Love”

R2K » Viva » 1999

Regine Velasquez, R2K [📷: Viva Records]Filipino singer and actress Regine Velasquez (b. 1970) had an elephantine task: covering a Jeffrey Osborne (b. 1948) classic. “On The Wings of Love” marked one of the triumphs of Osborne’s career post-L.T.D. Velasquez proved she was up to the task of reintroducing the 1982 hit to a new generation and making it her own. “On The Wings of Love” is the opening track from her 1999 album, R2K.

The first thing one with a keenly perceptive ear notices is that “On The Wings of Love” is in a different key compared to the original. That is to be expected with two starkly different vocalists performing it. The key suits Regine Velasquez perfectly. The production is solid; the musical backdrop sounds warm, refined, and sophisticated. Some of the sounds that catch the ears are the keys, ripe electric guitar, and soaring strings. Regine sounds passionate as she sings. She sings with ease for most of the song – calm, cool, and collected. She does not force things, sounding as if she barely breaks a sweat. The chorus sections deliver some of her most elite moments. Velasquez ups the ante during the bridge section, losing some of her poise for more dynamic, powerhouse vocals.

“Yes, you belong to me

And I’m yours exclusively

Right now, we live and breathe each other

Inseparable, it seems

We’re flowing like a stream running

Free trav’ling

On the wings of love.”

She eats up the key change. After reaching the new key, she returns to a place of poise, while still showing incredible vocal command and presence. Some of her ad-libs and melodic tweaks feel exactly right to make “On the Wings of Love” her song. Ultimately, “On The Wings of Love”, in the hands of Regine Velasquez, is a special, noteworthy musical listening experience. She does an outstanding job with this beloved ‘80s pop/R&B ballad.

Ah, we’ve arrived at the deliberation! To Deliberate is “to think about or discuss issues and decisions carefully.” With that definition courtesy of my go-to, Merriam-Webster, briefly break down these two distinct performances with some notes!

1. Jeffrey Osborne, “On The Wings of Love”

2. Regine Velasquez, “On The Wings of Love”

  • The songwriting (with Peter Schless) is superb; love-centric and built upon chivalry.
  • The melodies are tuneful in all sections of the song, particularly the divine, high-flying chorus.
  • The late, great George Duke did a fine job producing the track. Besides the R&B/pop instrumentation, the strings shine, amplifying the elegance and signaling romance.
  • “On The Wings of Love” in the hands of Mr. Osborne speaks for itself, no extensive analysis necessary.
  • Regine Velasquez reintroduced “On The Wings of Love” to a new generation. Her cover arrived in 1999, 17 years after the original.
  • Like Jeffrey Osborne, “On The Wings of Love” seems like the perfect song for her; she sings it incredibly well.
  • Velasquez’s versions did not chart in the U.S. However, the nearly 39 million plays on Spotify are impressive.
  • Velasquez’s take is set in a different key, which perfectly suits her voice. Later in the song, she eats up the key modulation.

Verdict

After much deliberation, yo boi, The Musical Hype, has reached a verdict. In the case… I mean, in the Face Off between Jeffrey Osborne and Regine Velasquez, Jeffrey Osborne comes out on top! What was the difference? Osborne co-wrote and performed the romantic, chivalrous hit, which reached the top 40. As previously stated, his voice feels perfect for this song. Velasquez also does an outstanding job, but with fewer accolades than Osborne. Honestly, you should have both renditions of this class in your listening rotation. You cannot go wrong with either! And with that said, stay tuned for the next Face Off!
