elcome to Head 2 Head ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ! On Head 2 Head, we pit at least two musicians together, comparing their performances in some form or fashion.ย  Then, after much deliberation, we deliver a verdict of which performance was the best, or at least, subjectively, which performance moved us more.ย  On the 24th edition of head-to-head (2022), we have an โ€˜apples to orangesโ€™ edition (sort of) with ๐ŸŽ™ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and ๐ŸŽ™ Anthony Hamilton contending for best respective song โ€“ ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Miss Youโ€ versus ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Thought We Were in Love.โ€ย  Worth noting, these two songs do share a connection โ€“ read on to find out how! So, without further ado, let the Head 2 Head commence!

1. Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, โ€œI Miss Youโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes โ€ข ๐Ÿท Epic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1972ย

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes [๐Ÿ“ท: Epic]โ€œ(Ooh) Oh, I / โ€ฆ Oh I / I miss you, baby.โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Miss Youโ€ is one of the preeminent soul classics.ย  ๐ŸŽ™ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes lay claim to this gem from their 1972 album, simply titled, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.ย  One of my favorites by the soul collective, the collective had bigger pop hits, with ๐ŸŽต โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€ leading the charge.ย  Regardless, โ€œI Miss Youโ€ matches their pop juggernauts in quality.

[๐Ÿ“ท: Valentin Tikhonov / Pixabay]Listening to the full-fledged, nearly-nine-minute version of โ€œI Miss Youโ€ is like experiencing heaven on earth.ย  The lush, soulful production by ๐ŸŽ› ๐ŸŽผโœ Kenneth Gamble and ๐ŸŽ› ๐ŸŽผโœ Leon Huff, who also penned the record, helped usher in that beloved Philly sound. To this day, Of course, Pendergrass highlights the yearning, and heartache of the lyrics, backed up by those Blue Notes.ย  โ€œEver since you went away,โ€ he sings, โ€œI ainโ€™t been doing nothing but / (Thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking).โ€ Heโ€™s in his head, in his feelings because heโ€™s heartbroken, so much itโ€™s affected everything, including that โ€œDrinking, drinking, drinkingโ€ฆโ€ย  Basically, Teddy, Harold, and those Notes are trying to cope for this lost love, but it hurts so much: โ€œWithout you, I donโ€™t know what to do with myself, what to do with my time.โ€ Personally, I find its dramatic execution, and those slow, soulful vibes to be one of the most relatable representations of heartbreak through song.ย  Damn that no. 58 peak โ€“ ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Miss Youโ€ ranks among the best of all time!

ย 2. Anthony Hamilton, โ€œI Thought We Were in Loveโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Love is the New Black โ€ข ๐Ÿท My Music Box / BMG Rights Management โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Anthony Hamilton, Love is the New Black [๐Ÿ“ท: My Music Box / BMG Rights Management]โ€œWe were two peas in a pod, not spending much time apart (No, no) โ€ฆAnd out of the blue things started to change / You started acting real strange.โ€ Uh-oh! In 2021, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning, contemporary soul singer/songwriter ๐ŸŽ™ Anthony Hamilton released a brand-new studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Love is the New Black. ย Sadly, it failed to chart on the Billboard 200.ย  Nonetheless, itโ€™s a well-rounded LP that plays true to Hamiltonโ€™s artistry. ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Thought We Were in Loveโ€ marks one of the best moments, inspired by and interpolating a ๐ŸŽ™ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Miss You, Pt. 1โ€.

[๐Ÿ“ท: RODNAE Productions / Pexels]Cleverly, the harmonized backing vocals in โ€œI Thought We Were in Loveโ€ recreate the harmonies of โ€œI Miss You, Pt. 1,โ€ while the melody is inspired and emulates the beloved 70s gem.ย  Itโ€™s most obvious when those celestial, lush backing vocals lift the โ€œOh, Iโ€ but fail to complete the remainder of the lyrics (โ€œโ€ฆmiss you, miss you, miss youโ€).ย  Beyond its inspiration, โ€œI Thought We Were in Loveโ€ is a fabulous throwback joint in its own right.ย  Itโ€™s a reminder of how accomplished Mr. Hamilton has been throughout his career in preserving and recreating soul music. Of course, the plight of love is the modus operandi.

โ€œI thought we were in love, love

I had to leave you alone

I thought we were in love, love

What more can I do? Yeah.โ€

The Verdict ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฟโ€โš–๏ธ

[๐Ÿ“ท: Layers on Pixabay]๐ŸŽ™ Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes or ๐ŸŽ™ Anthony Hamilton? ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Miss Youโ€ or ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Thought We Were in Love?โ€ Hamilton sings marvelously on โ€œI Thought We Were in Loveโ€ โ€“ I felt that man! That said, give me the 1970s soul classic, โ€œI Miss Youโ€ without a doubt. I mean, the late, great and gifted, sex symbol ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals? Thatโ€™s a must!
