gnash, imagine if [Photo Credits: :): / Atlantic]Alternative artist Garret Nash, better known as gnash, returns with his second, ‘imaginative’ single of 2018, “Imagine If.”

Gnash had a huge ‘come-up’ in 2016, thanks to the release of the single, “I hate u, I love u” (featuring Olivia O’Brien).  What made the record so big?  Likely, it was the unique, hipster vibe compelled with singing about the ups and downs of love.  Since then, the versatile, 25-year old musician has released several new singles, though none have had the same impact.  Nonetheless, Garrett Nash continues to grind, following up “the broken hearts club” – his first single of 2018 – with “imagine if.”

There’s plenty to rave about on “Imagine if.”  Gnash may have an understated approach, but he (1) has an alluring and appealing voice and (2) has some mad swagger.  As chill as this bro is, he exhibits plenty of personality on “imagine if.”  His versality shines through, as he sings as well as drops some melodic bars.  Like “I hate u, I love u,” he gets a bit salty asserting, “Imagine if I had the power to control the voices in my head / And I could tell them all to shut the fuck up.” Ah, For Under Consent of the King.  Naturally, he imagines lots of things as he reminisces back to relationship that didn’t work out at least partially thanks to him.  At the end of the chorus, he sings:

“Aye-oh, aye-oh, aye, okay

Lost our love in the mess we made

Aye-oh, aye-oh, aye, okay

If tomorrow was yesterday.”

Final Thoughts

Beyond the plight of love fueling his fire, the production plays a sizable role as well.  Not only does gnash handle the boards on this enjoyable joint, so do Digital Farm Animals.  Fueled by soulful piano with some synths and sick drum programming thrown in, it’s easy to see why “Imagine If” ends up being so successful.
