In the 33^rd edition of Dazzling Duets (2026), Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye collaborate on “You Are Everything”. Let the dazzle begin!

Marvin  Gaye (1939 – 1984) asserts, with Diana Ross (b. 1944) responding, “You are everything / Ooh, ooh, you are everything.” In 1973, the two Motown icons collaborated on the full-length album, Diana & Marvin. One of the most popular duets from the LP is the opener, “You Are Everything.” “You Are Everything” was NOT an original; The Stylistics originally recorded the Thom Bell (1943 – 2022) and Linda Creed (1948 – 1986) composition. Grammy-winner Joe Simon (1936 – 2021) recorded a unique cover that precedes the Ross/Gaye rendition. But, of course, this one-in-a-lifetime duo made “You Are Everything” special.

“You Are Everything” begins with the intro, excerpted earlier, performed by Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. Notably, the accompaniment during this intro is distinct; it sounds dreamy, lush, and romantic to the nth degree. This section alone separates this rendition from the iterations that precede it. After distinguishing itself, the beloved soul gem takes on its traditional sound; it’s pretty straightforward. Diana Ross performs the first verse, singing calmly and coolly.  She never gets too high but brings authenticity and expressiveness.  Of course, the first verse begins with the unforgettable lyrics, “Today I saw somebody / Who looked just like you / He walked like you do / I thought it was you.” Gaye joins Ross in the chorus, the centerpiece.  He leads the charge initially, with Ross responding briefly, while they sing the majority:

“You are everything (You are everything)

And everything is you

Oh, you are everything

And everything is you

Oh, you are everything

And everything is you.”

Marvin Gaye gets his moment to shine during the second verse, bringing more power to his performance. “Oh, darling, I just can’t go on / Living life as I do,” he sings, and continues, “Comparing each girl with you / Knowing they just won’t do.”  From there, the two conclude the song powerfully on several iterations of the chorus. Gaye brings the grittier ad-libs, while Ross sounds angelic with her refined vocal riffs.  Ultimately, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye make a formidable duo, particularly on “You Are Everything.” Listeners are blessed with great vocals and synergy, and superb production that exemplifies the 1970s soul sound.
