2. Jake Bugg, On My One

[Island]

Metascore: 60

After compiling 12 critical reviews (as of June 23), Jake Bugg’s third album On My One averaged out to a Metascore of 60, just like Meghan Trainor.  Like Trainor, some enjoyed the album, with Q Magazine, Clash Music, and Uncut in particularly awarding On My One above average marks.  Still, not everybody was aboard.

The Guardian (3 stars/60) asserts, “sometimes the resulting tracks are just cringeworthy,” specifically referencing Bugg’s hip-hop track, “Ain’t No Rhyme.” AllMusic, who gave On My One two-and-half stars (50), claims “the whole thing adds up to a bit of a mess…” Pitchfork sticks a knife in the British singer/songwriter, proclaiming “On My One is precisely the kind of mistake that pop stars make when they think they’re smarter than the system.” Ouch!

At The Musical Hype, Bugg’s latest album received three stars and we acknowledged that not everything worked.
