In the 67th edition of Bangerz N Bopz (2026), we break down “Heather” performed by Conan Gray.
[nx_pullquote]“Walks by / What a sight for sore eyes / Brighter than the blue sky / She’s got you mesmerized while I die.”[/nx_pullquote] What a bummer for Conan Gray! Ugh! What isn’t a bummer is “Heather,” the 10th track from his 2020 debut album, Kid Krow. “Heather” marks one of the best moments from the platinum-certified album. Speaking of Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifications, “Heather” was certified multi-platinum. The multi-platinum status is impressive considering the song failed to reach the top 40 on the pop charts – it settled for number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. Gray composed a gem, produced by Dan Nigro.
On “Heather,” Conan Gray is wrongfully mad at Heather. Why??? The person he likes doesn’t like him (“Only if you knew how much I liked you”) but likes Heather (“But I watch your eyes as she…”), so he dislikes Heather. But should he? “But how could I hate her? She’s such an angel,” he asserts, and continues, “But then again, kinda wish she were dead…” It’s illogical, but very relatable, particularly the chorus:
“Why would you ever kiss me?
I’m not even half as pretty
You gave her your sweater, it’s just polyester
But you like her better
(I wish I were Heather).”
Ultimately, “Heather” is a superb pop song that encompasses unrequited love and jealousy. Gray sings beautifully with incredible authenticity and sincerity.
