The selections featured in this column highlight musical gems from the 20th century, though there are occasional exceptions. All music genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 66th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on Le Freak” performed by CHIC.

“Ah, freak out / Le freak, c’est chic.”
Woo! And thus begins the ace-in-the-hole by R&B, funk, and disco band extraordinaire, CHIC, Le Freak. “Le Freak” is the second track on their 1978 album, C’est Chic.  It spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  That is a huge deal! In 2024, the ultra-successful single was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.  Who composed this ‘70s juggernaut? The late bassist, Bernard Edwards (1952 – 1996), and guitarist Nile Rodgers (b. 1952) wrote and produced it in all of its freaking glory.

“Le Freak” is an earworm from the first time you hear it. Following the count-off in the intro, the chorus, excerpted earlier, kicks in, in all of its glory.  The music is a surefire vibe.  The rhythmic guitar is funky to the nth degree.  The bass provides a mighty low foundation.  The drum groove (Tony Thompson), with plenty of hi-hat, is groovy, groovy – did I mention it was GROOVE?!  Beyond the core rhythm instruments, keyboards (Rob Sabino) and strings accentuate the color.  The playful string riffs are iconic. Not only does the musical accompaniment cook from every instrumentalist, but the lead vocals, shared by Alfa Anderson (1946 – 2024) and Diva Gray (1952 – 2024), are lit, too.  The melodies are striking. The lyrics encourage getting on the dance floor! “Come on along and have a real good time /… Now we freak, oh what a joy / Just come on down to the 54 / And find a spot out on the floor.” Woo! Beyond the lead vocals of Anderson and Gray, the background vocalists are captivating, most notably Luther Vandross (1951 – 2025). Le Freakis the crème de la crème of the 1970s but also stands tall among all songs – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime record.  No extensive analysis or commentary is necessary as the music speaks for itself.  This song right here is nothing short of sugar, honey, and iced tea.  Timeless!
