All genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 108th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” performed by Cher.
“I was born in the wagon of a travellin’ show / My mama used to dance for the money they’d throw.” Those lyrics, performed marvelously by actress, singer, and icon Cher (b. 1946), paint a vivid portrait early on in “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.” Cher adds, “Papa would do whatever he could.” Whatever it takes to make ends meet, it seems. “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” is the second track from her 1971 album of the same name (the album was originally titled Chér). The song spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. She was nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. Bob Stone (Robert Stone, 1944 – 2009) composed “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.” Snuff Garrett produced it.
“Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” is a surefire vibe from the get-go. The musical arrangement (Al Capps) and production (Garrett) are awesome! The colorful, rhythmic introduction sets the tone – hypes Cher up before she sings one note! The ear-catching sounds include carnival calliope, piano, mandolin, strings, a robust bass line, and punchy drums. Beyond the instrumental magic, Cher delivers a spirited, nuanced vocal performance. Her tone is stunning. Also stunning: memorable lyrics and tuneful melodies! In the second verse, she “Picked up a boy just south of Mobile…” Uh-oh! She adds, “I was sixteen, he was twenty-one / Rode us to Memphis / And Papa woulda shot him if he knew what he’d done.” 👀 Oh, snap! Later, in the bridge, she admits, “Three months later I’m a gal in trouble / And I haven’t seen him for a while.” Hmm, wonder why! In the third and final verse, the vicious cycle is revealed 👀. But can’t mention this song without its centerpiece, the crème de la crème, the chorus!
“Gypsys, tramps and thieves
We’d hear it from the people of the town
They’d call us gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down.”
“Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” is a fantastic Cher song. Classic, classic, classic! Great vocals, intriguing songwriting, and superb production make it the gem that it is. This one is timeless!
