Serpentwithfeet (Josiah Wise) taps Ty Dolla $ign and Yanga YaYa for a surefire, naughty bop in โDamn Gloves,โ the promo single for his third LP.ย
โUh-huh / Damn gloves.โ ๐ Serpentwithfeet is a talented musician who deserves far more attention.ย He brought the heat on his 2021 sophomore album, ๐ฟ DEACON. ย One of the best and steamiest songs from DEACON was the song ๐ต โWood Boyโ which has nothing to do with trees ๐ณ ๐.ย I mention that song because ๐ Josiah Wise embraces S-E-X once again on ๐ต โDamn Glovesโ, the promo single for his third LP, ๐ฟ GRIP (arrives February 16, 2024). ย Produced alongside ๐๏ธ Nosaj Thing, Mike Irish, and S.Dot, with some cool minimal, but slick, modern cues, Wise taps ๐ Ty Dolla $ign and ๐ Yanga YaYa for the assist ๐ช.
โDamn Glovesโ runs a skinny two-and-a-half minutes in duration.ย That is sufficient! It features an enigmatic sound early-on, making the listener anticipate what is going down + whatโs to come.ย As always, serpentwithfeet catches the ear with his distinct pipes. The unique chorus is the first thing the listener hears post-intro:
โHold you closer, closer than those damn gloves
Kiss you longer, longer than a opera
If we keep on dancinโ we gonโ make love
Hold you closer, closer than those damn gloves.โ
Ooh-wee! Wise goes on to perform the first verse where the sex is pronounced: โI just wanna keep grind-grindinโ on my nigga / Whateverโs on his leg, good God, itโs gettinโ thicker.โ Well, damn ๐ ๐! Sure, Wise is overt, but give him credit for embracing what he desires sexually ๐จโโค๏ธโ๐จ๐ณ๏ธโ๐. Ty Dolla $ign arrives in the second verse. Heโs ALWAYS a vibe given his versatility (โDiamond choker, give me face like poker / How she get in, she fuckinโ the promoterโ). Yanga YaYa, a new age soul artist from South Africa ๐ฟ๐ฆ, adds to the vibe in the bridge, performing in Zulu ๐. All in all, ๐ต โDamn Glovesโ is a fun listen, one that is ear-catching from the onset. Serpentwithfeet is a tremendous talent.ย
