Ah, you know what time it is! It’s 3 to 5 BOPS time – WOO! On 3 to 5 BOPS, it’s all about brevity and sweetness… for the most part! There’s a theme/topic, 3, 4, or 5 songs, and a blurb – two paragraphs or less.  3 to 5 BOPS, hence, is a mini playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the 8th edition of 3 to 5 BOPS (2023), we select songs that are associated with BOOTY in some form or fashion. The BOPS arrive courtesy of 🎙 Bruno Mars, 🎙 Chlöe, 🎙 Queen, 🎙 Saucy Santana, and 🎙 serpentwithfeet.  Okay, let’s get into it!

1. Saucy Santana, “Booty” (Ft. Latto)

🎵 “Booty” • 🏷 RCA • 🗓 2022

Saucy Santana, “Booty” (Ft. Latto) [📷: RCA]Question: “Who else got a ass like this? / Who else throw it back like this?” Well, apparently it’s the colorful, sassy, openly gay rapper, 🎙 Saucy Santana.  On the short but potent single 🎵 “Booty”, he links up with fellow rapper 🎙 Latto for an infectious, bootylicious anthem. The prominent sample used on “Booty” probably sounds familiar.  That’s because 🎵 “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)” by 🎙 The Chi-Lites was notably sampled by 🎙 Beyoncé in her breakthrough solo hit, 🎵 “Crazy in Love”.  🎛 Johnny Goldstein produces this banger – good stuff! The Chi-Lites fuel both Saucy and Latto’s respective performances.  In the cause of Mr. Santana, there’s no doubt his ‘role’ as he highlights that his “Ass so fat but it still match the legs,” and, “Make him pass out when he hit it.” Woo! Confident AF, he later asserts in the bridge, “Booty make him cook, booty make him do the dishes (Uh-huh) / Booty-booty, make him wanna turn me to his Mrs/missus.” Day-um! Latto is ‘saucy’ too, kicking off the second verse touting her “flat tummy,” and adding, “One of ninety-nine reason bitches hate me.” Of course, it’s not the tummy these men ‘came for’ but rather the booty: “Girl, he love it here, I’ma shake it like dice (Shake it) /Wrapped around my finger, eatin’ booty from the bite (Ooh).” Well, one thing’s for sure – there’s no shortage of 🎵 “Booty”, and you can never have too many booty songs, right? Right!

2. Serpentwithfeet, “Wood Boy”

💿 DEACON • 🏷 Secretly Canadian • 📅 2021

serpentwithfeet, DEACON [📷: Secretly Canadian]Fair warning, we’re keeping things gay with 🎵 “Wood Boy”, a highlight from 💿 DEACON,  the sophomore album from alternative R&B artist 🎙 serpentwithfeet (Josiah Wise).  This incredibly sensual record represents one of the biggest discussion pieces of DEACON. Remaining true to who he is, serpentwithfeet describes the pleasure of gay sex, specifically bottoming. Serpentwithfeet lets us know what he likes and how he likes it.  More people should be honest about sex and sexuality, right? Anyways, there’s no escaping sexual roles (“Damn, I like him inside me”) or size (“He’s stacking that wood / Just like he should / Got my wood, wood boy”).  That’s grown-folk, adult conversation, but ultimately, it’s tastefully done.

3. Bruno Mars, “Chunky”

💿 24K Magic 🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2016

Bruno Mars, 24K Magic [📷: Atlantic]“She got to shake her little something / Ooh, throwin’ that thing from left, right, side to side.” Hmm, wonder what ‘thing’ 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 Bruno Mars is referencing on 🎵 “Chunky”? Honestly, it requires little imagination.  The man is talking about ASSets – da B-U-T-T! Sure, in the first verse of this 💿 24K Magic, he wants his women to be independent where financial matters are concerned, but that’s not the fun of “Chunky!”

“If you ain’t here to party, take your ass back home.” Hmm, the use of ass sounds intentional there Bruno! In the chorus, the chunkiness comes in full-figured – robust to the nth degree! “Chunky / Looking for them girls with the big ol’ hoops / That drop it down in daisy dukes / Yeah, I am the one, so I’m trying to recruit.” Wow! Carefree, the modus operandi is sex, period.  If you need further evidence, see verse two: “‘Cause once we get goin’, we rollin’ / We’ll cha-cha ‘til the morning.” Also, Bruno gives us a kick-ass (couldn’t resist) booty reference in the bridge: “Ooh, squeeze all of that into my coupe.” Ooh-wee, child! Get it Bruno! This 2016 groovy joint still slaps well into the 2020s!

4. Chlöe, “Have Mercy”

🎵 “Have Mercy” • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2021

Chloe, "Have Mercy" [📷: Columbia]“All this ass up in my jeans (work, work it, work it) / You can’t get up in between.” WOO! 🎙 Chlöe (Chloe Bailey) stepped out on her own on the brief, suggestive 🎵 “Have Mercy”. On “Have Mercy,” Bailey transitions and matures into an adult musician.  She puts aside ‘childish things.’ “Have Mercy” is readymade for the club.  It’s edgy but not too edgy.  In the chorus, excerpted above, she serves up ample swagger. Confident AF, she continues, “You tryna get a piece of me / I can teach you a couple of things (Lord, have mercy, work).” Beyond the chorus, she teases a nameless boy, proclaiming at the end of both verses, “You can’t get this thickness out of your mind.” Woo! Furthermore, in the more aggressive second verse, she asserts, “Body language like speaking Spanglish / I’ll educate ya how to do this shit.” Damn! Aiding the sexed-up theme and lyrics is slick, modern production work, courtesy of Bailey, 🎛 Murda Beatz, BoogzDaBeast, FnZ, and Joseph L’Étranger.

5. Queen, “Fat Bottomed Girls”

💿 Jazz • 🏷 Hollywood • 📅 1978

Queen, Jazz [📷: Hollywood]“Fat bottomed girls / You make the rocking world go around.” Um, sure, 🎙 Freddie Mercury – if you say so! 🎙 Queen came out fierce with 🎵 “Fat Bottomed Girls”, a standout from their 1978 album,  💿 Jazz. The second track, which was paired with 🎵 “Bicycle Race” as a single (“Get on your bikes and ride!”), peaked at no. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Honestly, “Fat Bottomed Girls” deserved even more commercial success, but nobody denies the awesome of this gem performed by a bisexual musician. Mercury did not write this voluptuous booty song.  Those honors go to guitarist 🎙 Brian May. Despite its heterosexual title, and Mercury’s bisexuality, May asserted in an interview, it’s not so much a heterosexual song as you might think. Fair enough.

A fat bottom is key, as the title suggests. In the first verse, Mercury sings of a coming of age, sexual experience: “Left alone with big fat Fanny / She was such a naughty nanny / Hey, big woman / You made a bad boy out of me.” Interpret it how you will.  Keeping it ‘classy,’ Mercury asserts in the second verse, “I’ve seen every blue-eyed / Floozy on the way, hey.” Say what, Freddie?!  Interestingly, in the third verse, Mercury speaks of “Stiffness in my bones” despite the fact that there “Ain’t no beauty queens / In this locality, I tell you / Oh, but I still get my pleasure /…Hey, big woman, you gonna make / A big man of me.” Can you say, sexual innuendo overload? Regardless, 🎵 “Fat Bottomed Girls” kicks some serious… ass [*inserts unavailable donkey emoji here to complete the pun or lack thereof]!
