Blackbear shines on his highly anticipated new album, digital druglord.Ā Digital druglord comprises of drugs, money, and sex.Ā
Blackbear ā aka Mat Musto ā is one interesting dude. No, itās not solely because of the numerous tats he has, but because of his musical versatility. Stylistically, his niche is in the urban realm, slated somewhere between rap and R&B.Ā Interestingly, up until this point, his biggest claim to fame happens to be a background role: co-writer of the Justin Bieber hit, āBoyfriend,ā alongside friend and mansionz collaborator, Mike Posner. Ā But this isnāt about Justin Bieber or Mike Posner. Itās about blackbear, who drops his new album, digital druglord.
āHell is where I dreamt of u and woke up aloneā
Blackbear opens digital druglord with a bang. Ā āHell is where I dreamt of u and woke up aloneā begins with a reference to drugs: āMy nose is burning / Too much cocaineā¦/ āCause I just railed down enough lines tonight / To spell your first and last name.ā Drugs may fuel the fire for blackbear, but ultimately, heās depressed because he āDreamt of you / And woke up alone.ā
On āmoodz,ā blackbear is assisted by 24hrs.Ā Lyrically, everything is centered on the fact that he has two moods.Ā Throughout, blackbear illustrates two contrasting things, essentially suggesting he feels both ways at different times.Ā In some respects itās simple and repetitive, but itās hard to avoid being sucked into his mindset.Ā As for 24hrs, he focuses on money, smoking, and sex.
āI Miss the old uā
ā āI Miss the old uā finds blackbear pissed at his girl.Ā Essentially, sheās become shallow in his eyes, hence losing her authenticity.Ā His descriptions are definitely profane, including characterizing her as an āungrateful bitchā and later āfucking cold.ā On the chorus, interestingly, he doesnāt exempt missing himself:
āI miss the old me I miss the way I used to be I miss the old me And now these drugs controllinā me Itās all your fault, baby Still reaching for the Henny.ā
Among the more interesting moments is the second verse, where blackbear cites his girlās shallowness:
āI miss the old you Before you fucked G-Eazy Both the Migos too Started bumping 21 And now just ācause we doā¦ā
āDo re miā
ā āDo re miā has nothing to do with pitch syllables, aka solfege ā at least beyond constructing a hella catchy chorus:
āDo re mi fa so fuckinā done with you, girl So fuckinā done with all the games you play I aināt no tic tac toe Send the X and Oās on another note.ā
Using those pitch syllables only amplifies the catchiness and cleverness of āDo re mi.ā As with āI Miss the old u,ā blackbear isnāt happy with his girl.Ā If he didnāt break up with her previously, ādo re miā is the final straw.Ā Remaining profane, he asserts, āBitch, you crazy.ā
āWish u the bestā continues to connect with the rest of the narrative of digital druglord.Ā At the end of the first verse, blackbear alludes to āI Miss the old u.āĀ On āI Miss the old u,ā he sung:
āAnd I never got a single fuckinā thank you from you Or, āI love you daddy.āā
On āWish u the best,ā at the end of the second verse, he sings:
āYou and your girls drank all my liquor And yāall aināt even say thanks, ho.ā
On the second verse, thereās more depth ā at least contextually speaking.Ā He seems to reflect on what couldāve been, but chooses to focus on money, material things, and excess.
āJuicy sweatsuitsā
ā āJuicy sweatsuitsā continues to find blackbear speaking ill of his exes.Ā Through his eyes, his exes want him back and are clearly trying to make him angry by joining forces.Ā He is unfazed, criticizing their poor choices ā namely cocaine usage ā and ultimately being thankful heās out of the relationship.Ā Juicy J remains true to himself, referencing the Wraith (it was mentioned earlier on digital druglord) and essentially, paralleling his come-up with upgrading his chick.
āYou think you can do better, you just lyinā to yourself Canāt name one n*gga that can never keep up My last chick wasnāt dope enough, I had to re-up.ā
āDoubleā features double meanings, depending upon the instance that the word appears at any given time of the song.Ā On the chorus, blackbear shares the main meaning:
āI could change your whole damn life in a day Why would you wait on a train thatās never coming, girl? I could give you double, baby Why would you wait? Why would you wait on a man thatās never growing up?ā
Basically, he wants her to know he can āTreat you better / Than he can.ā The other uses of the word double include sex (āIāma hit it double, babyā), money (āIāma make it back doubleā), hallucinations (āseeing doubleā), and quantity (āI been drinking doubleā).
āIf I could I would feel nothingā
Once more, on standout ā āIf I could I would feel nothing,ā blackbear is brutally honest.Ā Although he has money, heās still unhappy.Ā Furthermore, even though he plans to hook up, itās nothing more than empty sex ā a one night stand.Ā Throughout this slow, but rhythmic joint, blackbear emphasizes āno feelings, no strings attached, girl.ā
āChateauā is about the superficial as opposed to important, meaningful things or experiences.Ā Consider his visit to the Chateau as an extension of āIf I could I would feel nothing.āĀ There is no transcendence, just shallowness ā the temporariness of āFucking in a California king [bed].ā āMake Daddy Proudā concludes digital druglord, with blackbear acknowledging how fake his ex was in order to attain perks.
āProud of you, proud of you Go āhead girl, make daddy proud of you Spending his money.ā
Final Thoughts
So, can blackbear change your whole damn life in a day? Maybe, just maybe. Digital druglord is an enjoyable effort that weaves elements of drugs, sex, and relationships together.Ā This effort isnāt perfectly assembled, but thereās more to love about digital druglord than to hate.Ā Blackbear has definitely got next.
