Cutting straight to the chase, this particular record was NOT what I was expecting from rising teen alternative singer/songwriter Billie Eilish.  From the onset of “Come out and Play,” it’s clear that listeners are hearing a kinder, gentler Eilish.  This isn’t the same artist that ‘roared’ right out of the gate on the likes of “you should see me in a crown.” If it’s sounding like that’s a negative observation, it’s not in the least. That contrast that served up by Eilish on this moody, restrained, and chilling track actually amplifies the versatility that this ambitious, incredibly gifted, and youthful artist possesses. Her voice is silky smooth, incorporating a truly haunting quality throughout. The intimate nature of the “Come Out and Play” truly makes it incredibly effective.

The superb production work by Finneas O’Connell definitely plays a sizable role, in addition to the vocals and of course, the songwriting.

“Yeah, I know it makes you nervous

But I promise you, it’s worth it

To show ‘em everything you kept inside

Don’t hide, don’t hide

Too shy to say but I hope you stay

Don’t hide away

Come out and play.”

Final Thoughts

“Come Out and Play” is another fine performance and song by Billie Eilish.  She continues to show just how much she has to offer to the alternative/pop game.  Arguably, “Come Out and Play” gets a smidge boring giving its slow pace and deliberate approach, but all in all, Eilish is making a compelling case to be the ‘next big thing.’
