Beck continues to captivate with throwback joint “Dear Life,” the third single from his highly-anticipated album, ‘Colors.’

Ah, a new Beck album is on the way.  It’s been three years sense we’ve heard from the Scientologist hipster, who shocked the world by winning the Grammy for album of the year for Morning Phase.  Why it was shocking was (1) because of the competition and (2) because it was generally a more subdued, conservative album from the alternative singer/songwriter.  All indications suggest Colors (October 13) isn’t subdued.  “Dear Life” is the third single from the album, following “Dreams” and “Wow.”

There’s plenty to love about “Dear Life.”  First and foremost is the sound, which has throwback pop/rock sensibilities. Even so, there’s something refreshing about this sound that keeps it from sounding anachronistic. The tone of the piano stands out in particular.  It sounds like Elton John’s piano from the 70s. Not to focus on the piano, but personally being a pianist, it plays a pretty awesome role in the success of “Dear Life.”

Vocally, Beck sounds as potent as ever, giving plenty of energy from the jump. If he showcased restraint on Morning Phase, it’s the total opposite on “Dear Life,” where he’s assertive to the nth degree. Harmonically, the progression keeps things interesting, going beyond the standard tonic, subdominant, and dominant chords. The twist and turns further highlight Beck’s musicianship – but we already knew he was an ‘Original G’ musically. Cons? What cons?

Final Thoughts

Beck is the man.  He didn’t need “Dear Life” to prove that, but the hipster keeps on being hip, even being middle-aged.  There may never be another “Jack Ass,” but Beck continues to keep things interesting.
