Lizzo, HOES | Song Review

Grammy-winner Lizzo taps outlandish St. Louis rapper Sexyy Red for the short, utterly wild rap single, “HOES” from Scary Movie.

And thus begins the Lizzo single, “HOES”, from Scary Movie.  Those sung lyrics from the chorus, the first section heard of the song, set the tone for an unapologetic, ‘take it with a grain of salt’ rap cut. Oh, and it’s not only Lizzo celebrating hoes… Sexyy Red gets into the mix, too. “HOES” was written by Lizzo, Sexyy Red, Hit-Boy, and Theron Thomas. Hit-Boy, Manny Marroquin, and Zach Pereyra produced it.

To reiterate, Lizzo sets the tone on “HOES.” The f-bombs are, dare I say, fucking potent. Following the chorus, Lizzo eats in the first verse. “Without big booty, pretty hoochie mamas like me,” she spits, and continues, “Grabbing nickels, throwing ass on ATVs.” The lyrics aren’t eloquent, but the ass is shaken. In the refrain that follows, she brags about her drip and her figure.  Essentially, in her eyes, she’s the shit.  Sexyy Red keeps the same energy in the second verse. She is true to herself with her own bold, unapologetic bars. Her crown jewel: “Shake that ass, I don’t care if it’s little, if it stink / Booty hole still brown and the pussy still pink.” Lizzo drops the third and final verse, keeping this raunchy: “Jiggle tig-old-bitties ‘cause they finally back in style.” What makes “HOES” special beyond is outlandish lyrics is the backdrop. Set in a minor key, the musical accompaniment/production is dark, malicious-sounding, and rhythmic.  The beat slaps, while the looped synths are, indeed, the shit. “HOES” is ratchet, but if you don’t mind an ass-shaking anthem now and again, this one might tickle your fancy.
