1. Dua Lipa, “Houdini”

🎵 “Houdini” • 🏷 Warner UK • 🗓 2023

Dua Lipa, Houdini [📷: Warner Records UK]🏆 Grammy-winning pop superstar, 🎙 Dua Lipa brings some serious magic 🪄 on her single, 🎵 “Houdini”. She penned the record alongside 🎼 Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle, Kevin Parker (of 🎙 Tame Impala fame), and Tobias Jesso Jr..  Harle and Parker also produced the record, characterized by a sick, danceable groove.  This is where Dua Lipa’s bread 🍞 is buttered 🧈! In addition to the beat, “Houdini” features a colorful palette of sounds – the keys 🎹 and synths rock 🤘 (in a 1980s sort of way, of course 😉).  Beyond the backdrop, she brings the heat vocally.  Her performance is solid, yet non troppo, if you will.  It’s cool how the songwriting incorporates 🪄 Harry Houdini into matters of the heart.  In this case, it’s singledom! The centerpiece, the chorus, arrives early, with Dua Lipa revealing the deck of cards 🃏:

“I come and I go

Tell me all the ways you need me

I’m not here for long

Catch me or I go Houdini

I come and I go

Prove you got the right to please me

Everybody knows

Catch me or I go Houdini.”

Ooh, wee! Lipa tells Apple Music,  “‘Houdini’ embodies the energy of a good night out. This was the first track I wrote about that fun and freeing time of being single.’”  She adds, “Sometimes you just have to pull a Houdini and leave a situation that’s no longer serving you.” Oh, snap 🫰!  The melodies are tuneful in the verses as well, and beyond the chorus the post-chorus is rad too:  “If you’re good enough, you’ll find the way / Maybe you could cause a girl to change her ways / Do you think about it night and day? / Maybe you could be the one to make me stay.” 🎵 “Houdini” = SUREFIRE BOP!

2. Conan Gray, “Killing Me”

🎵 “Killing Me” • 🏷 Republic • 🗓 2023

Conan Gray, Killing Me [📷: Republic]“Now you’re tossin’ a rock 🪨 at my windowpane 🪟 / Said, ‘I don’t wanna talk, just go away’ / But you claw at the locks 🔒 ‘til I let you invade.” Those are some emotionally driven lyrics, 🎙 Conan Gray. Of course, Conan is renowned for honest lyricism, as well as his magnificent voice. Gray dropped his single, 🎵 “Killing Me”, in 2023. He penned it alongside elite, super producers 🎛 Max Martin and Oscar Holter with incredibly positive results.

Thematically, matters of the heart ❤️ dominate “Killing Me.” Conan Gray is in pain – love pain! “I love you bad, that’s the problem occurrin’,” he sings in the first verse, continuing, “Better love I deserve, and I’m hurtin’ / But sadly, I worship every moment we meet.” So relatable! Ultimately, in the chorus, where the tempo picks up, and the kick-@$$ groove kicks in, he makes it clear his lover is killing him, yet, despite this, “I can’t let go of your heart ❤️.” It all comes to head in the bridge, where he asserts, “I wanna die, but you keep me alive /… Fight to survive, oh, love of my life / You’re killing me.” Dramatic! The ear candy is decadent AF on 🎵 “Killing Me”, period. High-flying vocals, tuneful melodies, stellar production, and relatable songwriting make this joint right here a surefire bop.

3. Ari Lennox, “Get Close”

🎵 “Get Close” • 🏷 Dreamville / Interscope • 🗓 2023

Ari Lennox, Get Close [📷: Dreamville / Interscope]“I just want you to call / So we can get congenial.” 🎙️ Ari Lennox seeks closeness to him 😍 on the sensual single, 🎵 “Get Close”.  Lennox penned the record alongside producers 🎛️ DZL and Wu10.  The backdrop matches the intimate, sensual nature of the songwriting, sounding smooth and incredibly soulful.  Sounds that fuel ⛽️ this fire 🔥 include electric piano 🎹, a robust bass line, and an ‘old-school’ drum groove.  Even as “Get Close” hearkens back to the past, it also sound refreshing.  In addition to the songwriting and awesome production, Lennox is the biggest reason for the success of the record.  Her voice is magical – expressive, nuanced, and incredibly sophisticated.  She brings out the best in the tuneful melodies, integrating authenticity and personality.  Furthermore, her ad-libs are on-point, accentuating the closeness even more. 🎵 “Get Close” isn’t game changing per se, but it marks another instance where Lennox preserves the sanctity of R&B, keeping it alive and well.

4. Mad Tsai, “Boys Beware”

🎵 “boys beware” • 🏷 Mad Tsai • 🗓 2023

Mad Tsai, boys beware [📷: Mad Tsai]“I met a boy from out of town / Oh, he was perfect, and he turned me upside down.” Oh, snap 🫰, 🎙️ Mad Tsai! On 🎵 “boys beware”, the handsome pop standout captivates.  First and foremost, it is with his lovely singing and pure tone.  However, the sexy cover art for “boys beware” doesn’t hurt either.  Hard not to be titillated by Mad Tsai midriff eye candy, right? Still, this is about the music, and we can’t let belly button + undies 🩲 waistband with MAD written on it distract us 😈! The cover art plays directly into the title and theme of the song. Tsai knows exactly what he’s doing, and what these boys do! “Boys beware ‘cause he just toys with your emotion / Makes you feel like you’ve become insane,” he sings in the pre-chorus, adding, “He’ll hug you with a knife behind his back and smile / Surprise you with a little trip to Hell.” Damn! Of course, the centerpiece of this slickly produced (Tsai, 🎛️ Andrew Luce, and Drew Polovick), contemporary pop joint is the chorus, where the bisexual 🏳️‍🌈 pop musician sings:

“That boy might be the worse, but damn he looks fine

He makes the devil wet his bed at nighttime

He makes them fall down to their knees and cry

Don’t say I didn’t warn you when you die.”

Again, oh, snap 🫰, Mad Tsai! Those boys are hella dangerous. The good news is 🎵 “Boys beware” isn’t dangerous – it’s just another cute ☺️, Mad Tsai bop 💪!

5. Ross Lynch & THE DRIVER ERA, “Rumors”

🎵 “Rumors” • 🏷 The Driver Era LLC / TOO • 🗓 2023

Ross Lynch & The Driver Era, Rumors [📷: The Driver Era LLC / TOO]Did you see 🎙 Ross Lynch [shirtless] in the 🎵 “One of Your Girls” music video? 🥵 🥵 🥵! Beyond his looks, the actor/musician is also quite talented. On October 20, 2023, 🎙 Ross Lynch & THE DRIVER ERA unleashed 🎵 “Rumors”.  The result = an alternative, indie-pop bop you didn’t know you needed! Lynch produced “Rumors” alongside 🎛 Rocky, and Morgan Taylor Reid. “Rumors” kicks off in celestial fashion with warm, sustained vocals on the intro.  During the intro, Lynch provides a fabulous preface of the chorus: “‘Cause I’m on your tongue / And it’s just what I want.” What’s on the tongue 👅? Rumors, of course! “Rumors” features sweet melodies throughout and an easy-to-follow form – verse, pre-chorus,  and chorus.  Lynch sings with a beautiful tone. Specifically, his melismatic moments are a vibe. The two sections of the song that stand out the most are the pre-chorus (“…Caught you staring, and I love it, it / Now she’s in my room”), and the chorus which is catchy and easily gets stuck in your head:

“These rumors, these rumors

You’re caught up in rumors

I bet you wish you knew the truth about the things I do…”

Lynch is handsome – there’s no doubt about that.  But, if there was any doubt that the blond artist possessed musical talent, in his late 20s, well, Ross Lynch & THE DRIVER ERA bring the heat on 🎵 “Rumors”.

6. Mary J. Blige, “Still Believe in Love” (Ft. Vado)

🎵 “Still Believe In Love” • 🏷 Beautiful Life Music 📅 2023

Mary J. Blige, Still Believe In Love [📷:Beautiful Life Music]“Well, it’s a whole new day, a whole new wave / Ain’t worried ‘bout nothing.” The 🏆 Grammy-winning Queen of Hip-hop soul, 🎙 Mary J. Blige, embraces positivity on her feel-good single, 🎵 “Still Believe In Love”, featuring Harlem rapper, 🎙 Vado. Vado is the first voice heard on this exuberant single produced by 🎛 DJ Cassidy and Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman.  Helping to fuel ⛽️ the fire 🔥 is a sample –  🎵 “C.O.D. (I’ll Deliver)” courtesy of 🎙 Mtume (1984).  Those old-school, 1980s vibes are fitting for a Queen! Following a fab verse by Vado (“Was times I would F they minds before I pipe ‘em / Make ‘em feel like the love of my life before I psych ‘em), MJB gets to work 💪, bringing the heat vocally at 52 years young 🔥! The melodies are tuneful and often, rhythm.  There’s the hip-hop! “I been thinkin’ of the time I wasted / I been lookin’ in all the wrong places for love.” Despite going through a hard time, she exhibits great optimism regarding L-O-V-E ❤️ ❤️ ❤️, specifically in the chorus, which highlights the titular lyric. Even in the third verse, Blige believes in the possibilities of love, but “demand(s) a guy to treat me like the queen that I be.” WORD!  Vado gets an additional verse… or bridge (?) with his flow remaining potent. All in all, “Still Believe In Love” is a pleasant, well-performed and well-produced contemporary R&B joint.

7. Dixon Dallas, “Something To Feel”

🎵 “Something To Feel” • 🏷 Dixon Dallas • 📅 2023

Dixon Dallas, Something To Feel [📷: Dixon Dallas]“I need a man to lay me down and give me something to feel / Come pull me closer, bend me over, I’m just here for the thrill.” Oh, shiitake mushrooms! F🤬ck it, more like, holy 💩! 🎙️ Dixon Dallas excels at his role of gay cowboy, gay country music, and titillating by singing about gay sex. 🎵 “Something To Feel” is the latest record by the versatile 🎙️ Jake Hill to raise eyebrows among other things 😈.  Sexual themes + a countrified sound = lit-ness 🔥. Although brief, Hill sufficiently arouses us – “No strings attached, I’ll arch my back and let you do what you want.” Amplifying the lustful, sexual experience is a minor key.  Also, adding a bit more of modern touch is a hip-hop beat. Vocally, Hill sounds amazing.  It’s interesting that he characterizes Dallas as being a bottom – little spoon – yet, he performs with this deep, incredibly masculine sound that is idiomatic of country music.  All told, 🎵 “Something To Feel” is incredibly fun.  Maybe it makes heterosexuals feel some type of way about the likes of “Getting hot, you really got me cocked 🐓 and loaded” or  “I like it rough, it ain’t enough until I’m screaming your name,” but as for me, YEE HAW THE F🤬CK ON, GAY COWBOY 🌈 🤠!

8. Megan Thee Stallion, “Cobra”

🎵 “Cobra” • 🏷 Hot Girl Productions LLC • 🗓 2023

Megan Thee Stallion, Cobra [📷: Hot Girl Productions LLC]“I’m killin’ myself when bitches would die to be me.” Now that’s a mic-drop moment, 🎙 Megan Thee Stallion.  Produced by 🎛️ Bankroll Got It, Shawn “Source” Jarrett, and Derrick Milano, her latest single, 🎵 “Cobra” features intense production, which blends hip-hop and some rock cues. The fuel ⛽️ is there for the fire 🔥! As always, Thee Stallion’s flow is agile.  More notable than the flow, however, is what she raps about. Megan opens up about being depressed despite the fact that she’s blessed financially (“How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist”).  In the second verse, she continues to reflect on her pain and depression: “Never thought a bitch like me would ever hit rock bottom.” Also, in the same verse, furthering the pain, she “Pulled up, caught him cheatin’, gettin’ his dick sucked in the same spot I’m sleepin’ / Lord, give me a break, I don’t know how much more of this shit 💩 I can take.” Woo! There’s a lot to take in on the verses, but the chorus embraces that cobra 🐍 mindset: “This pussy depressed, hmm, I’m about to stress him, yeah / Pink nails 💅 ‘round his neck, huh, but this ain’t domestic.” The personal nature of 🎵 “Cobra” helps to make it incredibly successful.  She doesn’t sacrifice her bite or toughness, but she also shows a more vulnerable side – she has feelings and pain, too, celebrity be damned!

9. Alec Benjamin, “Different Kind of Beautiful”

🎵 “Different Kind of Beautiful” • 🏷 Elektra Entertainment • 🗓 2023

Alec Benjamin, Different Kind of Beautiful [📷: Elektra Entertainment]“You’re a different kind of beautiful, the kind that makes me scared / The kind that makes me turn around and act like I’m not there.” Pop singer/songwriter 🎙 Alec Benjamin is back with some fire 🔥 on 🎵 “Different Kind of Beautiful”. “Different Kind of Beautiful” has a different sound compared to other AB songs.  He penned it alongside 🎼 🎛 StarGate – Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen – who also produces the track. The resulting record is a BOP!

“I try to speak, but I can’t find the words

Knees gettin’ weak and my speech gettin’ slurred

Hands feelin’ heavy, and vision is blurred.”

As always, Benjamin impresses from a vocal perspective.  His instrument is beautiful, distinct, and boyish, in the most charming way possible. He rides the production, with its sophisticated sound, stupendously. The StarGate backdrop hearkens back to the past (it’s the plucked sounds) while simultaneously embracing the 2020s. Alec nails the rhythmic melodic lines, singing with incredible agility.  Of course, the crowning achievement – the crème de la crème – is the catchy, tuneful chorus. Excerpted above, it continues as follows: “The kind that takes my breath away and leaves me without air / Maybe I’m delusional, you’re just that kind of beautiful.” All told, Alec reminds us why he’s the sugar honey iced tea on 🎵 “Different Kind of Beautiful”.

10. Charli XCX & Sam Smith, “In The City”

🎵 “In The City” • 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2023

Charli XCX & Sam Smith, In The City [📷: Atlantic]“In the city, in the dark / In the city, in the dark.” 🎙 Charli XCX and  🏆 Academy and Grammy Award winner 🎙 Sam Smith join forces for the summery, dance-/ electro-pop banger, 🎵 “In The City”.  A relatively brief, exuberant record, Charli co-produces alongside a star-studded team:  🎛 A. G. Cook, George Daniel, ILYA, and Omer Fedi. The production plays a key role in the success of “In The City.” The thudding beat is infectious.  Furthermore, those keys 🎹 and synth are energetic and vibrant.  Charli provides the vocals to match, dominating the first half of the song: the first verse, refrain, pre-chorus, chorus, and the drop 💧. The chorus is catchy AF: “I never thought I would find it / But I found what I was lookin’ for / I found it in the…” Besides the chorus, the repetitive lyrics appearing during the drop stick too. Smith sounds fantastic when they enter the mix in the second verse. Furthermore, their upper tenor complements Charli when they sing together.  The blend on the second refrain, pre-chorus, and final chorus is everything.  Charli concludes this fun gem with the outro where she informs us, “I found it in the dark.” Word.  All told, 🎵 “In The City” is a blast!

11. Jung Kook, “Standing Next to You”

💿 GOLDEN 🏷 BIGHIT MUSIC • 🗓 2023

Jung Kook, Golden [📷: BIGHIT MUSIC]Arguably, 🎵 “Seven” is the song to beat on 💿 GOLDEN, the debut album by the handsome and talented, K-Pop artist, 🎙Jung Kook. As damn good as “Seven” is, 🎵 “Standing Next to You” is damn good too! 🎛 Watt and Cirkut give Jung Kook a badass backdrop to sing over 💪.  The sound is refreshing, blending both old and new ideas seamlessly. You want to put your disco 🪩 finger given the danceable, electrifying groove 🕺.  Furthermore, you’re in awe of the picturesque backdrop with it prominent bass 🎸 and brilliant horns 🎺.  Vocally, Jung Kook brings the heat, as he does consistently throughout GOLDEN.  The songwriting also bodes in his favor.  The melodies are rhythmic and incredibly tuneful, with the chorus being the crème de la crème:

“Standing next to you

Standing in the fire next to you, oh

You know it’s deeper than the rain

It’s deeper than the pain

When it’s deep like DNA

Somethin’ they can’t take away, ay

Take-take-take-take-take-take off.”

12. Omar Rudberg, “Off My Mind”

🎵Off My Mind” • 🏷 Record Company TEN • 🗓 2023

Omar Rudberg, Off My Mind [📷: Record Company TEN]“No, I can’t seem to get you off my mind.” It doesn’t take serious decoding to understand what Venezuelan 🇻🇪, Swedish 🇸🇪  singer/actor 🎙 Omar Rudberg is getting at in the chorus of 🎵 “Off My Mind”. Rudberg collaborates with Swedish 🇸🇪 duo 🎙 Jubël 🎙 Sebastian Atas and 🎙 Victor Sjöström on “Off My Mind.” Rudberg, Atas, and Sjöström penned “Off My Mind” alongside 🎼 David Lindgren Zacharias and Viktor Broberg. Jubël also serves as the producer. The cards 🃏 are revealed early on. In the first verse, Rudberg sings, “I’m in the mood for a long, long night.” Hmm, wonder what that means? 😈 Furthermore, he adds, “Body so fine, can I get that one last ride?” Damn! Similarly, in the second verse, the innuendo is pronounced, even if the line is technically never crossed.  Still, with lyrics like, “Baby, lock the door,” or “Let’s do it one more time,” it’s clear what’s going down. Oh, and for good measure, Rudberg busts out the Spanish in the bridge. Besides the hot 🥵 lyrics, Omar sings beautifully (and sexily), while the Spanish-tinged pop production is 🔥.  🎵 “Off My Mind” equates to an enjoyable, tuneful, and sexy pop earworm 💯.

13. Carlos Guevara, “Don’t Make Me Sad”

🎵 “Don’t Make Me Sad” • 🏷 Casa DeGuevara • 🗓 2023

Carlos Guevara, Don’t Make Me Sad [📷: Casa DeGuevara]“Fuck me in the backseat, fuck me in the backseat, fuck me in the backseat.” 😳 🎙 Carlos Guevara is naughty from the start on his NSFW single, 🎵 “Don’t Make Me Sad”.  Written by Guevara alongside 🎼 Sizzy Rocket, and Matias Mora, the sex is electric and also, rough.  What’s interesting is that Guevara presents himself submissively, yet, he’s aggressive in asserting his submissiveness 🤷🏾‍♂️ 😈.  Fittingly, the record features seedy sounding production (Mora produces, with additional production by 🎛 Cary Singer). It’s the synths for me that give this record it’s sus-ness – in a positive way, of course.  Guevara gives us wild vocals, specifically in the verses. He is much more melodic in the chorus, also naughty, but infectiously so 😈. The big takeaway of  “Don’t Make Me Sad” is Carlos is freaky AF! He’s a bad boy, who’s unapologetic.  His freakiness proves to be our listening pleasure. Slay boy, slay!

14. Jxckson, “Save Yourself”

🎵 “Save Yourself” • 🏷 Jxckson Music • 🗓 2023

Jxckson, Save Yourself [📷: Jxckson Music]“Forget about them, save yourself.” WORD! Selfish statement, but one perfect for a dark, minor key pop record 🤘! Marvelous, lush strings 🎻 (violin samples) at the beginning help make 🎵 “Save Yourself”, a bop from Austin, Texas pop artist, 🎙️ Jxckson, ear-catching. It’s not just the strings, of course. The production (🎛️ Boy Sim) is utterly stupendous with its colorful palette 🎨: the groove, the keys 🎹, the synths 🤩.  Jxckson describes this record as experimental and in-your-face bass driven 😎. Sound is crucial, but it is Jxckson that shines brightest with his playful brand of vocals.  Every time he sings, it’s as if he teases and toys with the listener. Less melodic at times, the spoken, chanted vocals have a haunting 👻, indulgent, and intimate in quality, which plays into the theme and overall vibe. Jxckson’s attitude makes “Save Yourself” most intriguing.  “This song was inspired by experiences of unreciprocated support I’ve experienced in my personal life and the music industry,” he asserts. That seems to explain  the potty-mouthed-ness which raises eyebrows and the intensity 😈.  Jxckson drops several bombs 💣 – like, “FUCK IT!” 🤬 🤬 🤬  On 🎵 “Save Yourself”, Jxckson, once again, proves himself to be a captivating artist that more people need to be listening to.

15. Jon B., “Waiting On You” (Ft. Tank)

🎵 “Waiting On You” • 🏷 Jon B. • 🗓 2023

Jon B., Waiting On You [📷: Jon B.]It’s been a couple of years since 🎙 Jon B. (Jonathan Buck) released a new single. Prior to 🎵 “Waiting On You”, the last time the 🏆 Grammy-nominated artist dropped a single was in 2019. Assisted by 🎙 Tank, “Waiting On You” is a fantastic comeback by Buck. “Waiting On You” runs north of four minutes in duration, and it’s worth every second! Jon wrote the record with Tank, with both artists producing alongside 🎛 Brady Watt.  The production features a colorful palette 🎨 of sounds that’s idiomatic of grown folks, adult contemporary R&B.  This record is throwback, yet, it’s also refreshing.  Jon serves up a smooth brand of vocals that are also incredibly sexy.  Thematically, the song is about SEX 😈. Even so, the men make it do tastefully.  The centerpiece is the catchy, memorable chorus: “Always on top for me / Your love is / Always on top for me / Your love / You got me waiting on you (Got me waiting on you) / Got me waiting on you.” WOO! Tank complements Jon B. superbly upon his arrival, also providing a welcome contrast with his deeper vocals.  When they sing together, well, frankly, “it’s on like Donkey Kong 🎮.”  No new territory is explored on 🎵 “Waiting On You”, but, again, it’s so flipping great to hear Jon B. back!

16. Mike Taveira, “1982 Virago”

🎵 “1982 Virago” •🗓 2023

Mike Taveira, 1982 Virago [📷: Mike Taveira]🎙️ Mike Taveira is one handsome fella 😍.  Of course, there’s much more to the pansexual 🏳️🌈 musician than those dashing good looks – he’s quite talented.  On 🎵 “1982 Virago”, Taveira wows with his musicianship.  On this brief number, he sufficiently brings the heat 🥵. “1982 Virago” was written alongside 🎼 Carly Paige and produced by 🎛️ Hubby. “You said baby let’s take a ride / Now I’ve got you locked in between my thighs…” Ooh-wee, Mike 😮💨 😮💨 😮💨! For some context, a Virago is a Yamaha motorcycle 🏍️.  While the Virago gets love, intact with a colorful, fresh, electronic pop backdrop, Taveira is less concerned with that bike 🏍️ and more concerned with matters of the heart ❤️.  Of course, the best love songs – falling in or out of love or breaking up – embrace the figurative and metaphorical. Ultimately, Mr. Taveira concocts another surefire winner.  His voice is on-point, the production slick, driven by its rhythmic lines, and the songwriting entertaining and tuneful 💪.

17. Cooper Bloom, Two Cowboys (Story of the Night)

🎵Two Cowboys (Story of the Night)” • 🏷 Cooper Bloom Music • 🗓 2023

Cooper Bloom, Two Cowboys (Story of the Night) [📷: Cooper Bloom]“In the deep heart of the south / There were lovers on the run / Searching for a place to stay / Where they could set their love ablaze.” Why on earth would lovers need to be on the run? Well, given the location (the South is a conservative place 😏) and the fact that these lovers are the same sex 🌈, the discrimination, judgment, and, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation means their love is in jeopardy. On 🎵 “Two Cowboys (Story of the Night)”, Toronto, western-flavored pop artist 🎙 Cooper Bloom highlights the fact that love is love. It’s worth fighting for, even in the midst of tremendous adversity and intolerance from others.

“The story of the night two cowboys 🤠 🤠 light their love on fire / And watched the darkness of the world turn to light.” Indeed, indeed, Cooper.  He continues singing in the thoughtfully penned, tuneful chorus, “They prayed 🙏 to a god to keep them safe / While they took on the open waters / They knew the man upstairs didn’t give a care / Who they love, love, love.” Marvelous! Bloom, who penned this gem, delivers a compelling tale that isn’t merely applicable to cowboys.  The cowboys could be anyone who fell in love who simply want to live their lives sans persecution.  Set in a minor key, with some epic country-flavored, western cues fit for cowboys, “Two Cowboys” is superbly produced (🎛 Jesse Shirts).  Besides his sensational pen, Bloom delivers a strong vocal performance. I ❤️ his tone and the robustness of his instrument.  He executes the tuneful melodies flawlessly.  Furthermore, just listening, you can tell that Bloom, a proud member of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️🌈 community, is passionate about what he sings; incredibly authentic.  🎵 “Two Cowboys (Story of the Night)” is a home run, PERIOD.
