On “PASSENGER,” a single from his sophomore album, WILDCHILD, Alex Warren delivers a pleasant song that doesn’t move the needle.
“PASSENGER” begins with a brief mysterious sound effect. Soon enough, a strong groove provides stability, and Alex Warren gets to work. The mystery dissipates. He serves up pleasant and respectable vocals. Is his performance the most fun I’ve ever heard? No, but it’s well-rounded, all in all. The melodies are rhythmic throughout, which adds to the intrigue. “Let’s run from it all for the hell of it / Oh, God, put me back in my element,” he sings in the second verse, and continues, “We talk about things we don’t wanna address / I guess I’ll make room for the elephant.” The section to beat is the chorus, marking the catchiest and most memorable moment of the song.
“How do I drive from the passenger side?
I’ve been holding on tight to a telephone line
Living your dream, baby, what about mine?
Tell me I’m yours, wonder what it feels like
What it feels like.”
Notably, the bridge differentiates itself from the verses and the chorus, keeping “PASSENGER” relatively engaging. So, how does “PASSENGER” stack up? Ultimately, it’s ‘good’ without being ‘great.’ Warren sings well, the chorus is catchy, and the lyrics are interesting. Still, in my humble opinion, the song doesn’t move the needle for Alex.
