18 Light & Dark Songs, In Three Phases features music courtesy of Breaking Benjamin, Camila Cabello, Justin Timberlake, John Legend and MGMT among many others.
The word light has numerous meanings. According to Merriam-Webster, light is âsomething that makes vision possible,â as well as âelectromagnetic radiation of any wavelength that travels in a vacuum with a speed of 299,792,458 meters per second.â With even more definitions, light has a lot going on. Dark is none too shabby itself, defined by good ole Merriam-Webster as âdevoid or partially devoid of light,â or âwholly or partially black.â Again, the meanings go on and on.
Whatâs clear is that light and dark are two contrasting things â total opposites. 18 Light & Dark Songs, In Three Phases features nine light songs and nine dark songs. Keeping things interesting, weâve divided this list into six groups â phases if you will â each comprised of three songs. The groups alternate between a phase of light and phase of dark songs. Among the artists featured on this playlist are Breaking Benjamin, Camila Cabello, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and MGMT.
Light: Phase I
1. Justin Timberlake, âMorning Lightâ
Ft. Alicia Keys
Man of the Woods â˘Â RCA â˘Â 2018
Justin Timberlake gets âfirst bloodâ on light: phase I thanks to the song âMorning Lightâ from his 2018 album, Man of the Woods. In the context of Man of the Woods, âMorning Lightâ is the first of only two collaborations, tapping Alicia Keys. This slick urban contemporary cut has a dash of country and tropical flavor, featuring Chris Stapleton as a co-writer. Although âMorning Lightâ is low-key, itâs definitely alluring.
2. Lorde, âGreen Lightâ
Melodrama ⢠Republic â˘Â 2017
âGreen Lightâ served as an early indication that Kiwi artist Lorde was evolving her sound. As a departure, âGreen Lightâ gave her a fresh start. While Lorde doesnât sound particularly smooth vocally, her raspy, coarse tone is quite appealing. Furthermore, her intensity is a selling point, as she exhibits feistiness from the onset. After delivering the pre-chorus in her lower register, everything comes together on the infectious chorus. Danceable production work and fantastic backing vocals provide the cherry on top.
ââCause honey Iâll come get my things, but I canât let go Iâm waiting for it, that green light, I want it.â
3. Luke Bryan, âLight it Upâ
What Makes You Country â˘Â Capitol Nashville â˘Â 2017
Luke Bryan keeps things short and sweet âLight It Upâ, the promo single from his 2017 album, What Makes You Country. The production work is slick, firmly planted in the new vein of country. The chorus is the crème de la crème â big, intense, and chocked-full of objectophilia. Bryan is infatuated with a lady (normal), but develops a ârelationshipâ with his phone because heâs become obsessed with what his lady is doing (paraphilia). Oh Luke.
Dark: Phase I
1. MGMT, âLittle Dark Ageâ
MGMT â˘Â Columbia â˘Â 2018
âLittle Dark Ageâ initiates with alluring, mysterious synths, which serve as the pre-cursor to a sick, infectious, alt-pop groove. The production is arguably, the best feature of the highlight from the MGMT comeback album, Little Dark Age. Even so, vocally, Andrew VanWyngarden quickly proves he hasnât missed a beat, sounding as tuned-in as ever. Throughout âLittle Dark Ages,â he compellingly delivers the âfrightening,â poetic lyrics. While he never force things, VanWyngarden sounds more assertive compared to the past, which suits the lyrical content and theme.
2. Camila Cabello, âIn the Darkâ
Camila â˘Â Epic â˘Â 2018
The arrival of Camila certainly warmed up the cold winter weather of January 2018. The debut album by 20-year old Cuban pop artist Camila Cabello isnât devoid of flaws but showcases immense potential.  âIn the Dark,â the ninth track from Camila, arrives timely, incorporating more groove, a moderate pace, and an assertive performance. The ad-libs and vocal nuances are particular appealing.
3. Lil Uzi Vert, âDark Queenâ
Luv is Rage 2 â˘Â Atlantic â˘Â 2017
âMama love me so I can do no wrong (do no wrong) / Mama in the trap so this her favorite song (favorite song).â
Lil Uzi Vert is a Grammy-nominated artist â shocking right? To his credit, the rapper had a big year in 2017, led by a number one album, Luv is Rage 2. One of the highlights from Luv is Rage 2is the song âDark Queen.â While the execution of the record is debatable, the theme and message arenât. Lyrics like, âShe donât want me locked up / Momma Iâm gonâ wash upâ stand out, particularly given the reality of the number of incarcerated black men.
Light: Phase II
4. Doja Cat, âMorning Lightâ
Amala ⢠Kemosabe / RCA â˘Â 2018
Rapper and singer DojaCatis already proving herself as a bold, risquĂŠ addition to pop music.  The sensual âMorning Lightâ serves as the seventh track on her debut album, Amala. Also, this is the second âMorning Lightâ of the playlist (Justin Timberlake dropped his own âMorning Lightâ earlier). Like many other songs on the album (âGo to Townâ and âBody Languageâ come to mind), thereâs an element of play involved.
âDonât wanna waste your time Go âhead, live your life I could be yours tonight We will be up âtil the morning.â
5. NF, âGreen Lightsâ
Perception â˘Â Capitol â˘Â 2017
âGreen Lightsâ is among best of the best of NFâs 2017 album, Perception. The production work is excellent. Sure, this is Christian rap, but the hard and malicious sounds make you rethink the definition of the style. NF flexes, exhibiting an superb flow, showcasing the utmost confidence and swagger. The hook is fire.
âAll I see is green lights All I see is green lights All I spit is real life Bet you donât know what thatâs like.â
6. John Legend, âDarkness and Lightâ
Ft. Brittany Howard
Darkness and Light â˘Â Columbia ⢠2016
John Legend made an awesome return in 2016 with his album Darkness and Light. The album was underrated unfortunately but filled with stellar songs nonetheless (âI Know Betterâ, âLove Me Nowâ, and âPenthouse Floorâ are the best of the best). On energetic, thrilling retro-soul/rock title track, Legend taps Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard for the assist. Man, what chemistry does the pair have, sigh. All in all, the results are impressive, successfully contrasting Legendâs past work and strengthening an already strong catalogue.
Dark: Phase II
4. Breaking Benjamin, âThe Dark of Youâ
Ember ⢠Hollywood â˘Â 2018
âThe Dark of Youâ is the sixth song on Ember, the sixth studio album by rock band Breaking Benjamin. Though âThe Dark of Youâ is an intense record, itâs also a beautiful one. A slower number, frontman Benjamin Burnley sings with incredible expression, particularly on the catchy, dramatic chorus. Notably, heâs backed by Derek Hough (Dancing with the Stars) on this most dark cut.
âFade away to the wicked world we left And I become the dark of you Say a prayer for the wounded heart within As I become the dark of you.â
5. The National, âDark Side of the Gymâ
Sleep Well Beast â˘Â 4AD ⢠2017
âDark Side of the Gymâ serves as the penultimate record from The Nationalâs Grammy-winning 2017 album, Sleep Well Beast. The song excels at love, serving as a companion piece and natural follow-up to a previous song, âCarin at the Liquor Storeâ. While âDark Side of the Gymâ is straightforward for the most part, frontman Matt Berninger has some fun lyrically.
âI have dreams of anonymous castrati
Singing to us from the trees.â
6. Imagine Dragons, âDancing in the Darkâ
Evolve â˘Â Interscope â˘Â 2017
âDancing in the Darkâ serves as the closer for Evolve, the Grammy-nominated âpopâ album by Grammy-winning band, Imagine Dragons (Best Rock Performance, âRadioactiveâ). âDancing in the Darkâ is a more restrained ballad that utilizes a nice palette of sounds. There are ample vocal effects, making âDancingâ gimmicky. Nonetheless, the core of where Imagine Dragons desire to take its music is easily perceptible.
Light: Phase III
7. Marvin Sapp, âLight the Wayâ
Close â˘Â Provident â˘Â 2017
âLight the Wayâ has the arduous task of following the dynamic title track and crowning achievement of Close. It doesnât supersede it by any means, but smartly embraces groove and energy, which goes a long way. While Pastor Marvin Sapp could have successfully closed with the moving âCloseâ, the record at hand is slick, funky, enjoyable and ultimately, well-performed and well-rounded.
8.Big Sean, âLightâ
I Decided. â˘Â Def Jam â˘Â 2017
On âLight,â Big Sean segues from âIntro,â the tone-setter for his 2017 I Decided. Notably, Big Sean gets an assist from R&B singer Jeremih. Featuring a couple of prudently selected samples, he has an excellent backdrop to paint his positive rhymes upon. âLightâ is as bright as the title suggests, with the rapper in full-on shine mode. After all, âA loaded mind is more dangerous than a loaded weapon.â
9. Linkin Park, âOne More Lightâ
One More Light â˘Â Warner Bros. â˘Â 2017
Following the tragic death of Chester Bennington, Linkin Parkâs 2017 album One More Light grew more chilling, and in some respects, more meaningful. Even prior to Benningtonâs suicide however, the title track came off as morbid. Thereâs no angst, as thereâs little throughout the album, but âOne More Lightâ is by far the saddest song from the album. The record is reflective, with sound messaging, even though it lacks sufficient development.
Dark: Phase III
7. Devin Dawson, âDark Horseâ
Dark Horse ⢠Warner Music Nashville â˘Â 2018
âNo, I ainât no white knight / Iâm a little more / Dark horse.â âDark Horseâ serves as the title track and concluding number from Dark Horse, the 2018 debut album from California country musician Devin Dawson. What stands out about âDark Horseâ is the honesty of the songwriting and openness of Dawson himself. Just as the aforementioned lyrics and title suggest, Dawson sees himself as a dark horse.
âNo, I donât go to church, can't quote a bible verse I couldnât sing a song but that donât mean that I donât talk to Jesus Girls say I push them off, that I canât open up But I ainât afraid of love, when I say it I just want to mean it.â
8. Grace VanderWaal, âDarkness Keeps Chasing Meâ
Just the Beginning â˘Â Columbia â˘Â 2017
Grace VanderWaal was 13 years old when her debut album, Just the Beginning, was released (2017). Among the gems of the album are âMoonlightâ, âSick of Being Toldâ and âSo Much More Than Thisâ. Just the Beginning concludes with âDarkness Keeps Chasing Me.â Somewhat restrained initially, the record and Grace herself percolate, growing more overt and dramatic. The strings are a gorgeous production feature.
âEvery now and then The darkness tries to chase me And my legs are getting tired of running Oh, please donât Please donât let it get to me Oh, I donât wanna give up that easily But the darkness keeps chasing me.â
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers, âDark Necessitiesâ
The Getaway â˘Â Warner Bros. â˘Â 2016
âDark Necessitiesâ is the best song from Red Hot Chili Peppersâ 2016 album The Getaway. From a first listen, the magic of the record is clear, finding RHCP on autopilot. The funk is real, led by Fleaâs masterful bass playing. Additionally, a sick groove anchors âDark Necessitiesâ down, not to mention the use of piano. Frontman Anthony Kiedis is at his best.
âYou donât know my mind You donât know my kind Dark necessities are part of my design.â
