Grace VanderWaal, Just the Beginning © Columbia13-year old Grace VanderWaal drops “So Much More Than This,” a teaser track from her debut album, Just the Beginning (November 3).

Truly, America’s Got TalentGrace VanderWaal, a mere kid, proved that, winning the popular television show.  The thing is, not only did she win a reality competition, she truly possesses talent – she’s got chops.  After releasing a debut EP in 2016, Perfectly Imperfect, she arrives in 2017 with her full-length debut album, Just the Beginning.  In advance of Just the Beginning, she dropped several teaser songs, including “So Much More Than This.”

Like “Moonlight” that precedes it, “So Much More Than This” is short and sweet.  Given her youthful age, brevity is a smart choice. The production work is a bit more pronounced compared to “Moonlight,” but not overblown.  Even with more instrumentation backing her, VanderWaal is never in battle with her backdrop – she’s always in command.  Vocally, she shines, using her youthful, distinct instrument to its maximum potential. On the verses, the production is lighter, particularly when she sings in an undertone.  Even when she’s not belting it out, she’s always the focal point.

Final Thoughts

Like “Moonlight,” there are no glaring cons. “So Much More Than This” gives VanderWaal another catchy, age-appropriate song.  This song, and the direction Grace is going in, seems suitable at this point of her career – the beginning of course.  In regards to artistry and talent, she definitely has more maturity than most teen-pop artists. Vocally, she remains distinct.  “So Much More Than This” isn’t heavy, but once more gives VanderWaal an enjoyable, pleasant, and fun song.
