Playlist “17 Songs Associated with the Body” features music courtesy of Björk, Ciara, DNCE, Selena Gomez, Sia and many others.
Let’s jump right into it! The criteria for our latest, greatest playlist, 17 Songs Associated with the Body is as follows:
(1) The songs must feature the word body in their respective song title.
(2) The songs must’ve arrived no earlier than 2013. Why? Just because.
(3) One body song per artist – no duplicates unless the artist happens to be a featured guest.
Other than that, everything else is fair game for this playlist. Among artists appearing on this particular playlist are Björk, Ciara, DNCE, Selena Gomez, and Sia.
1. Doja Cat, “Body Language”
Amala • Kemosabe / RCA • 2018
Writers: Amala Zandile Dlamini, Cameron Bartolini & Rytchi Pronzola « Producer: Richie Beats
Doja Cat clearly wants to play on “Body Language,” a song from her debut album, Amala. For the R&B artist, playing isn’t referring to any child’s games, but rather sex. Filled with innuendo, on the chorus she informs us of her desires.
“‘Cause you’re talkin’ with your body, body
Can we touch up on the topic, topic?”
2. Sam Hunt, “Body Like a Back Road”
Body Like a Back Road– Single • MCA Nashville • 2017
Writers: Josh Osborne, Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally & Zach Crowell « Producer: Zach Crowell
On “Body Like a Back Road”, Sam Hunt blended country music with urban music sensibilities. Some liked it, many panned it. Regardless, he knows his wife, really well, likening her body – specifically her curves – to a backroad.
“The way she fit in them blue jeans, she don’t need no belt
But I can turn them inside out, I don’t need no help
Got hips like honey, so thick and so sweet
It ain’t no curves like hers on them downtown streets.”
He also describes the sex in driving/road-speak as well.
“Body like a back road, drivin’ with my eyes closed
I know every curve like the back of my hand
Doin’ 15 in a 30, I ain’t in no hurry
I’ma take it slow just as fast as I can.”
3. Björk, “Body Memory” (Ft. Arca)
Utopia • One Little Indian • 2017
“Body Memory” is a bit long-winded, running 10 minutes. Nonetheless, it’s among the best songs on Utopia, the 2017 album by Icelandic standout, Björk. Flutes help to amplify the drama and colorful nature of the production and song. Tense strings, angry cat sound effects, choir, and dark soundscapes set the tone for her to paint over. Björk reflects on lots of things, including love, sex, rural life, urban life, legal issues, and the future. It’s complex, yet stunning.
4. Dvsn, “Body Smile”
Morning After • OVO Sound / Warner Bros. • 2017
Writers: D. Daley, D. Tennant, N. Shebib & P. Jefferies « Producers: Nineteen85 & Noah “40” Shebib
Daniel Daley (of dvsn) has makeup sex on his mind on “Body Smile.” Mm Hmm. This is a classic case of ‘she was better than I was, and now I’ve come to that realization.’ For every mishap and his utter lack of maturity – he wasn’t ready y’all – he’s going to “make her whole body smile.”
“Now that you know
You were better than I was ready for, oh
It’s not like before, yeah
Tonight, I’m making up for it all
For every time I let you cry
I will make your whole body smile.”
5. Majid Jordan, “Body Talk”
The Space Between • OVO Sound / Warner Bros. • 2017
Writers: J. Fauntleroy II, J. Ullman, M. Al-Maskati & M. Eriksen « Producers: Jordan Ullman & Stargate
Interestingly, Majid Jordan, another Canadian collective that just happens to be signed to OVO Sound / Warner Bros., had a similar concept to dvsn. Instead of “Body Smile,” this time it’s “Body Talk.” In this case, Majid Al-Maskati essentially wants the words to be silenced, while the body does the talking.
“I just wanna lay you down
I just wanna let you know, baby, we don’t
We don’t need words, let your body talk
Baby don’t speak, let your body talk
So much to say
This is the only way to say it
We don’t need words, let your body talk
Baby, don’t speak, let your body talk.”
6. N.E.R.D, “Deep Down Body Thurst”
NO ONE EVER REALLY DIES • Columbia • 2017
Writer & Producer: Pharrell Williams
“Deep Down Body Thurst” has the difficult task of following “Lemon” on the 2017 N.E.R.D comeback album, NO ONE REALLY DIES. That’s tough, but “Deep Down Body Thurst” is rock-solid on its own. The record successfully mixes urban contemporary, pop, and rock styles. The pop-rock element shines on the driving, rhythmic chorus.
“On, you won’t get away
Even in your fast car
Oh, you won’t get away!
Send your sons to the stars
Oh, you won’t get away! Hey Hey!
Smoke in the garage
Going to your head
‘Cause your intentions are dead
Dead wrong
Deep, deep down body thurst
Wrong
Deep down body thurst
Hey hey, yeah yeah!”
7. Syd, “Body”
Fin • Columbia • 2017
Writers: Nick Green, Rose Marie Tan, Sean Rhoden & Syd « Producer: Melo-X
Take it away
Put on a show
Put on a play.”
Openly gay R&B musician Syd (The Internet) gets into the body action with “Body,” a gem from her solo album, Fin. Like many of the men that grace this list, when it comes to talking body, it has a sexual context. Keeping it authentic, she is rightfully honest about her sexuality, asserting, “Girl I swear, I can hear your body babe.”
8. DNCE, “Body Moves”
DNCE • Republic • 2016
Writers: Albin Nedler, Joe Jonas, Justin Drew Tranter, Kristoffer Fogelmark &
Rami Yacoub « Producers: Albin Nedler, Kristoffer Fogelmark & Rami
“Cake by the Ocean” is considered to be the crowning achievement of DNCE, the full-length debut album by the Joe Jonas-led pop collective. Nonetheless, highlight “Body Moves” has a compelling case. It opens enthusiastically with “ow!” Yeah, it’s corny, but the spirit exhibited is undeniable. The groove has the dancefloor in mind, with its neo-disco qualities. Overall, “Body Moves” is a well-produced record, filled with soulful cues. In addition to superb production work, innuendo– that sexy body talk – serves as the record’s biggest selling point.
“Come and roll with me, we’ll rock them body moves
Me and you (oh, just a little bit)
Body moves (yeah, just a little bit, ow!)
Come on home with me, oh baby, let it loose
Me and you (oh, just a little bit)
Body moves (yeah, just a little bit)
I don’t need it, but you know bad I want it
And your touch has got me haunted, but I like it
Come and roll with me, we’ll rock them body moves
Me and you (oh, just a little bit)
Body moves (yeah, just a little bit).”
9. Dreezy, “Body” (Ft. Jeremih)
No Hard Feelings • Interscope • 2016
Writers: B. Hazzard, Ely Weisfeld, Jeremy Felton, Michael Tucker & Seandrea Sledge « Producer:BloodPop®
Dreezy is tough-minded throughout the course of her overlooked, underrated debut album, No Hard Feelings. That said, she softens her tone on the BloodPop®-produced hit single “Body.” The MC opts for a pop-rap/urban contemporary style. She also brings along a friend for the ride, the oft sensually-driven Jeremih (remember breakout hit “Birthday Sex”?). Jeremih is perfectly suited for “Body,” which clearly embraces sex.
“Yo body on my body baby
I’m about to catch a body in her baby
I love the way you grind on me
Said I’m about to catch a body in here baby.”
10. Demi Lovato, “Body Say”
Body Say – Single • Island / Hollywood • 2016
Writers: Demi Lovato, Nolan Lambroza & Simon Wilcox
On “Body Say,” it’s clear that sexis the M.O. It’s not merely innuendo, but brutal honesty from Demi Lovato. Lovato, like many pop stars, embraces the urban-pop sound. Given the sensual nature of “Body Say,” the sound is perfectly suited. Lovato shows off her lovely set of pipes, shifting between her lower and upper register. By the time the chorus hits (upper register), she’s on fire.
“You can touch me with slow hands
Speed it up, baby, make me sweat
Dreamland, take me there, cause, I want your sex
If my body had a say, I wouldn’t turn away
Touch, make love, taste you
If my body told the truth, baby I would do
Just what I want to.”
11. ScHoolboy Q, “Big Body” (Ft. Tha Dogg Pound)
Blank Face LP • Interscope • 2016
Writers: D. Arnaud, Q. Hanley, R. Brown & T. Okonma « Producer: Tyler, the Creator
“Steppin’ in my big blue Chucks
Groovy Q, they all wanna fuck
Park the Cutlass at the pump
Hit the switches over speed bumps
Knocking six twelves in the trunk
Where the girls with the rump?
All the pretty bitches to the front
All you groupie niggas to the back.”
Tyler, the Creator sits in the production chair for the jazz-infused, G-Funk ScHoolboy Q joint, “Big Body.” The west coast rapper enlists Tha Dogg Pound. In the context of the dark, often arduous Blank Face LP, “Big Body” lightens the mood, but doesn’t go ‘soft’ in the least.
“Swear to dick I shoulda made racks
Nigga, clean, dick in that cat
Got my Jimmy on strap
Like it when your booty get tapped.”
12. Sia, “Move Your Body”
This is Acting • RCA • 2016
Writers: Greg Kurstin & Sia Furler « Producer: Greg Kurstin
Sia delivers a spirited, guilty pleasure on the up-tempo “Move Your Body.” “Move Your Body” hails from her 2016 album, This is Acting. While calling the record transcendent would be a major overstatement, “Move Your Body” is among the most fun records from the album. The electrifying energy is the biggest selling point of this body-driven number.
“Your body’s poetry, speak to me
Won’t you let me be your rhythm tonight?
(Move your body, move your body)
I wanna be your muse, use my music
And let me be your rhythm tonight
(Move your body, move your body).”
13. Lloyd, “Heavenly Body” (Ft. Rick Ross)
True– EP • Young Goldie Music / EMPIRE • 2016
On “Heavenly Body,” chiseled R&B singer Lloyd brings Rick Ross along for the ride. The sound of the record embraces hip-hip cues and sensibilities. The busy production doesn’t inhibit Lloyd’s distinct vocals, which remain on-point. The title says of the song says it all. The modus operandi is clearly sex. Fortunately, Lloyd, excels at singing about it.
“I almost died last night (almost died last night)
When you took off your clothes
My heart just stopped (my heart)
Your heavenly body
And when we start off, won’t stop
It’s like I live in you, girl you’re so soft
Your heavenly body.”
14. Selena Gomez, “Body Heat”
Revival • Interscope • 2015
Writers: Antonina Armato, Chauncey Hollis, Julia Michaels, Justin Drew Tranter, Selena Gomez & T. Price « Producers: Hitboy & Rock Mafia
“I’m going in, I’m ready to surrender
Like a diamond, I need a little pressure
So, press me down till I scream
If you’re the flame, I’m kerosene
I’m burning up, baby.”
Throughout the course of her 2015 album, Revival, Selena Gomez keeps the innuendo ripe. Among the sexually-tinged numbers where “Hands to Myself,” “Good for You,” and the record at hand, “Body Heat.” Without a doubt, she has sex on her mind, confirmed on the chorus.
“All I need is your body heat right next to me
Burning up burning up, so give it up give it up.”
15. Wale, “The Body” (Ft. Jeremih)
The Album About Nothing • Atlantic • 2015
Writers: Cartier Grand, Jeremih Felton, Kenneth Coby, Olubowale Akintimehin & Robert Kelly « Producers: Soundz
Interestingly, in the context of The Album About Nothing, “The Body” follows “The Matrimony,” a rap song with more substance and profundity than most. Wale isn’t quite as profound on “The Body,” a bonus cut. This is blatantly obvious when guest Jeremih drops lines like, “You remind me of my Jeep, I wanna ride it.”
“She like when I drive it, I like it in park
Pull that thing over you likely to sore
I got her floating like riding on stars
So I keep it GPS, see where this going
Nothing will stop it, I slide in no prob
Ch-ch-chop it, my swipe your parts
Sex is her weapon, my snake in her garden
So know when I’m not here the viper is on.”
16. Tove Lo, “Talking Body”
Queen of the Clouds • Universal Music • 2014
Writers: Jakob Jerlström, Ludvig Söderberg & Tove Lo « Producers: Shellback & The Struts
The feeling of your skin locked in my head
Smoke, smoke me broke
I don’t care, I’m down for what you want.”
‘Unapologetic’ might as well be the middle name of Swedish pop artist Tove Lo. Before she was singing about “Disco Tits” on her 2017 album Blue Lips, she was “Talking Body” on her 2014 debut album, Queen of the Clouds. Apparently, her dude is built.
“Now if we’re talking body
You got a perfect one
So, put it on me
Swear it won’t take long
If you love me right
We fuck for life
On and on and on.”
17. Ciara, “Body Party”
Ciara • Epic • 2013
Writers: Carlton Mahone, Ciara Harris, Jasper Cameron, Michael L Williams II, Nayvadius Future Cash, Pierre Ramon Slaughter & Rodney Terry «
Producer: Ciara Harris, Mike WiLL Made-It & Nayvadius Future Cash
“My body is your party baby.” Who wouldn’t want to be part of a “Body Party” with the gorgeous Ciara? Unfortunately, only one person is invited to this sexual occasion, as she memorably states, “…Nobody’s invited but you, baby.” “Body Party” is the subtlest sex track, but Ciara does manage to make sexual escapades pseudo-classy as opposed to downright explicit. Up and down career aside, “Body Party ranks among her best.
“You can’t keep your hands off me
Touch me right there, rock my body
I can’t keep my hands off you
Your body is my party
I’m doing this little dance for you
You got me so excited
Now it’s just me and you
Your body’s my part, let’s get it started, oh.”
