1.RΓͺve, β€œTongue”

πŸ’Ώ Saturn Return β€’ 🏷 31 East Inc. / Universal Music Canada, Inc. β€’ πŸ—“ 2023

RΓͺve, Tongue [πŸ“·: 31 East Inc. / Universal Music Canada, Inc.]β€œI’m about to blast off like a spaceship πŸš€ / Come blow my mind like bubblegum.” Ooh wee!  In 2022, Canadian singer/songwriter πŸŽ™ RΓͺve (Briannah Donolo) dropped a surefire, electronic banger of single with 🎡 β€œTongue”. Yup, it’s giving #licky, licky, licky πŸ‘…!  β€œTongue” appears as the eighth track on Donolo’s 2023, debut album, πŸ’Ώ Saturn Return. It features incredibly slick production work by πŸŽ› Carl Ryden that exemplifies the electro-pop music sound and vibe. RΓͺve and Ryden penned β€œTongue” alongside 🎼 ✍ Liam O’Donnell, Kirsten Johnson, and Bryn McCutcheon πŸ’ͺ

β€œTongue” finds RΓͺve characterizes a hottie – specifically, a hot girl – superbly:

β€œShe’s that fine wine type, so pretty that it hurts

The next thing you know, you forget your safe word

She wolf drag me out of the goddamn closet

Knew before I did how bad I want it

Everybody says she a cunning linguist and strictly business.”

Woo! The lyrics are bold and unapologetic. RΓͺve performs confidently and fearlessly.  The chorus is incredibly infectious chorus: β€œI like the taste of your tongue / I like the thing that it does.” And, of course, another compelling moment comes by way of β€œKitty, kitty, kitty cat, kinda wanna piece of that.”  Honesty and transparency are the best policies, right? Right! All told, β€œTongue” is a blast – a horny, naughty, totally rad electro-dance bop.

2. XILLAN, β€œMY BROTHER’S TONGUE IS A GUN”

🎡 β€œMY BROTHER’S TONGUE IS A GUN” β€’ 🏷 XILLAN β€’ πŸ—“ 2023

XILLAN, MY BROTHER'S TONGUE IS A GUN [πŸ“·: XILLAN]On 🎡 β€œMY BROTHER’S TONGUE IS A GUN”, Surinamese, Netherlands-based musician πŸŽ™ XILLAN (Xillan Macrooy) addresses the treatment received by those close to him due to his sexuality.  Instead of letting their judgment get to him, he chooses war. β€œMY BROTHER’S TONGUE IS A GUN” commences with warm piano chords.  There is an enigmatic air – a somber sentiment – established early on. Macrooy sets the tone: β€œEvery time I hold my lover’s hand / For my brother and his mother to see / I choose war / I choose war.” Homosexuality is frowned upon (sometimes persecuted) in many African countries, as well as in various black and brown communities.  Sadly, it draws the ire of many 🀬.  He adds, the titular lyric: β€œEvery time I hold my lover’s hand / My brother’s tongue is a gun / And I choose war / I choose war.”

pride heart burstMy brother’s tongue represents the view of an entire community. The scenario is applicable and relatable to so many that hail from a community of color and understand they’re NOT like everyone else.  β€œMy brother’s mother prays to a god she was given / And she numbs herself with gospel,” he sings, adding, β€œHis father never says a thing / He don’t know how to find the words.” Of course, because of being gay, β€œthe sons [have] fallen.” Even as a fallen son, XILLAN shows resolve and bravery, embracing the war. Why shouldn’t he be able to live his life with the person he loves? Throughout the course of this musical essay, Macrooy is authentic, honest, and vulnerable, truly speaking to an experience shared by so many yet rarely publicized, particularly in music.  He delivers a gorgeous falsetto as well as impressive mid and lower register moments.  He gives us poise, contrasting with incredibly expressive, thrilling highs, fueled by homophobia, judgment, and intolerance.  Can’t neglect to mention those rhythmic drums, which are perfect for the tone poem of this social war not only being fought within XILLAN’s community, but so many communities throughout the world. All told, 🎡 β€œMY BROTHER’S TONGUE IS A GUN” is EPIC to the nth degree, and the music speaks for itself.

3. Lauren Sanderson, β€œTongue Tied”

πŸ’Ώ Death Of A Fantasy β€’ 🏷 Lauren Sanderson / Rix / AWAL β€’ πŸ“… 2022

Lauren Sanderson, Death Of A Fantasy [πŸ“·: Lauren Sanderson / Rix / AWAL]β€œBut I don’t wanna be your friend / I wanna put you on top.” Woo, the Midwest is in the house! πŸŽ™ Lauren Sanderson, originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, is officially 🎡 β€œTongue Tied,” or so she says on the highlight from her 2022 album, πŸ’Ώ Death Of A Fantasy.  β€œTongue Tied” features a marvelous pop/rock groove.  There are some awesome music cues within the production work (Sanderson, πŸŽ› Pink Slip, inverness, Beauty School Dropout). Sanderson deliver robust, playful low register vocals in the verses – a #WIN, WIN, WIN πŸ’ͺ! Notably, in the second verse, Sanderson performs in an incredibly rhythmic fashion. She is more playful compared to the first. Another β€œTongue Tied” win? A fun pre-chorus! β€œHold me like a cigarette 🚬 / I taste the smoke πŸ’¨ and take a breath / I tell you that I love ❀️ you but I don’t.” Hmm, interesting πŸ€”! Adding to the highlights is the chorus, which easily gets stuck in the head:

β€œTongue tied

The way you hold me by the waistline

I know it’s gonna be a late night

I know you’re gonna make me

Say some things I might regret

Oh.”

Ah, being β€œTongue Tied” never sounded so good!

4. Hozier, β€œButchered Tongue”

πŸ’Ώ Unreal Unearth β€’ 🏷 Rubyworks Ltd. / Columbia β€’ πŸ“… 2023

Hozier, Unreal Unearth [πŸ“·: Columbia]β€œAnd as a young man blessed to pass so many road signs / And have my foreign ear made fresh again on each unlikely sound,” πŸŽ™ Hozier (Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) sings in the chorus of 🎡 β€œButchered Tongue,” the 12th track from his ambitious, third studio album, πŸ’Ώ Unreal Unearth.  The πŸ† Grammy-nominated, Irish singer/songwriter continues singing in the chorus, β€œBut feel at home, hearin’ a music that few still understand / A butchered tongue still singin’ here above the ground.” On the thought-provoking, two-and-a-half-minute record, Hozier explores the loss of culture and loss of languages. It commences with a warm introduction. Even with that warmth, you can’t help but feel a sense of sadness 😒 given the losses that he speaks of: β€œIn some town that just means β€˜home’ to them / With no translator left to sound / A butchered tongue still singin’ here above the ground.” Additionally, he references dark but significant history, Irish Rebellion of 1798, when he sings, β€œThe ears were chopped from young men if the pitch cap didn’t kill them…” Yikes!

5. Billie Marten, β€œTongue”

πŸ’Ώ Drop Cherries β€’ 🏷 Fictions β€’ πŸ“… 2023

Billie Marten, Drop Cherries [πŸ“·: Frictions]β€œI’d trace you with my tongue / I’d do it, so I don’t forget where you come from.” Aww, what a sweet, sweet sentiment, πŸŽ™ Billie Marten. Those simple, yet gooey lyrics hail from 🎡 β€œTongue,” the 11th track from her fourth album, πŸ’Ώ Drop Cherries (2023). Notably, β€œTongue” features lovely, acoustic piano accompaniment.  Marten’s vocals are expressive and radiant. The pacing of the record stands out especially. Billie never gets in a rush – she’s calm, cool, and collected. The strings prove to be a nice addition, signaled by the chorus:

β€œDon’t turn the light off, I want to stare

And I do forgive you for being there

I see you better with your eyes shut

And I’m sure as anything that I can’t see enough.”

β€œTongue,” which Marten describes to Apple Music as possessing β€œthat adolescent feeling of β€˜I really like you actually, and I would like to take you with me,” also possesses a hypnotic quality.  It draws you into its magic.

6. Peter Ngqibs & Kisos, β€œtongue tied”

🎡 β€œtongue tied” β€’ 🏷 Peter Ngqibs β€’ πŸ“… 2023

Peter Ngqibs & Kisos, tongue tied [πŸ“·: Peter Ngqibs]β€œHow do I tell you how I feel? / When the word can’t roll off of my tongue, tongue tied.” πŸŽ™ Peter Ngqibs may be tongue tied adversely but his song, 🎡 β€œTongue Tied” is a bop, a bop – did I mention, it’s a BOP?! The South African πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ born, USA-based πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ, Xhosa singer, songwriter, composer and organist πŸ’ͺ shines – utterly radiates – delivering some of the butteriest smooth vocals you’ll ever hear.  With every note, Ngqibs brings authenticity, heart, and ample passion. An enigmatic intro proves to be incredibly ear catching and sets the tone for β€œTongue Tied.” The production is lush, but also anchored by a fabulous rhythmic groove.  Besides epic lead vocals, the vocal harmonies are amazing as well, amplifying the colorful sound palette – upping the ante.  And of course, there’s a strong assist provided on this tongue-tied vibe, courtesy of another talented musician, πŸŽ™ Kisos 🀩.  Notably, Kisos provides contrast to Ngqibs, bringing some bite and punch, vocally towards the end. Again, for the fourth time, β€œTongue Tied” is a BOP.

7. Kisos, β€œBite Your Tongue”

πŸ’Ώ Autophagia (EP) β€’ 🏷 Miller Place β€’ πŸ—“ 2023β€― β€―

Kisos, Autophagia [πŸ“·: Miller Place]Speaking of πŸŽ™ Kisos: β€œIn my world everything’s fine / Don’t understand why you are terrified.” 🀬 β€œAnd those kids at the border line / Ship β€˜em back they’ll be alright / Follow the rules that justify,” the pop singer/songwriter continues singing on 🎡 β€œBite Your Tongue”, a single that appears on his 2023 EP, πŸ’Ώ Autophagia. You should be mad as hell listening and reading the lyrics – that is the intent of the songwriting. Sadly, there are people in the world who have strong, incredibly insensitive opinions about those who are marginalized.β€― Describing his marvelous single, Kisos states it is β€œa heavy, eerie track dragging everyone who is passive and unfeeling in the face of genocide of marginalized peoples.” WOO!

Kisos, Bite Your Tongue [πŸ“·: Miller Place]β€œNow you leave us bleeding β€˜cause you bite your tongue.” The theme is arguably the crowning achievement of β€œBite Your Tongue.” Saying nothing, aka being passive, is not acceptable, and honestly, plays in the role continued marginalization.β€― Deep stuff that not enough artists tackle in all honesty. Of course, beyond the awesome songwriting, the voice, music, and production are all selling points. From the start, β€œBite Your Tongue” is locked-in with the rhythmic guitar accompaniment, a driving force throughout the track.β€― Furthermore, additional music cues and production touches (synths and such) make this socially conscious anthem even better.β€― Vocally, Kisos has a fabulous instrument on his hands. His performance feels authentic with beautiful, expressive vocals that cry foul to these passive folks.β€― Also, the harmonized vocals are worth shouting out.β€― ALSO, what about the tune? There are some great melodic moments, executed by Kisos’ pipes stupendously.β€― All told, he skwirted out a gem – a call to action bop – with 🎡 β€œBite Your Tongue”.

8. Tink, β€œTongue Tied”

πŸ’Ώ Thanks 4 Nothing β€’ 🏷 Winter’s Diary / WD / EMPIRE β€’ πŸ“… 2023

Tink, Thanks 4 Nothing [πŸ“·: Winter’s Diary / WD / EMPIRE]β€œI’m throwin’ this ass back, he catch it like hard ball / Finna get cracked, kitty so fat, gotta come raw dog.” 😳 🫒 😢. It should come as no surprise that 🎧 15 Tantalizing Tongue Songs features lots of tongue-tied songs.  Rapper and singer πŸŽ™ Tink (Trinity Home) adds to the list with – wait for it – 🎡 β€œTongue Tied”! β€œTongue Tied” appears as the 12th track off her 2023 album, πŸ’Ώ Thanks 4 Nothing. β€œTongue Tied” features slick production work by πŸŽ› Hitmaka and Bankroll Got It that is idiomatic of contemporary R&B – dat urban sound.  From the onset, the listener is treated to sexy vibes – an understatement. Of course, Tink serves up unapologetic, S-E-X driven lyrics to match the sexy aesthetic given off by the production.

Bitmoji ImageThe examples of naughtiness are endless from Tink. See Exhibit A:

β€œHe wanna go headfirst, show me a tongue trick

Feelin’ so wet, he pullin’ my tracks

Finna make me cum quick, nigga, don’t pull out

Baby, it’s too fire, fuckin’ me right, this shit so tight.”

Damn! At another point, Tink asserts, β€œBaby, I’m lit, finna ride that dick like a brand-new Corvette.” Vroom, vroom 🏎️ 😈! The chorus is simple, but, unsurprisingly, captures the sentiment perfectly: β€œTongue tied, T-t-tongue tied.” Word, like WOO! Oh, and for good measure, just a little more unapologetic vibes from Tink: β€œLook, baby, I’m ridin’ no automobile / Play in my sheets, you been uptight / Tonight let’s unwind.” Clearly, that D is potent – NO 🚫 CAP 🧒

9. Red Hot Chili Peppers, β€œTippa My Tongue”

πŸ’Ώ Return of the Dream Canteen β€’ 🏷 Warner β€’ πŸ“… 2022

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Return of the Dream Canteen [πŸ“·: Warner]β€œWe’ve only just begun / Funky monks are on the run / Gonna get you with the tip of my tongue.” Um, sure! 🎡 β€œTippa My Tongue” appears as the opener from πŸ’Ώ Return of the Dream Canteen, the second πŸŽ™ Red Hot Chili Peppers album of 2023. This four-minute-and-twenty second cut is, um, very, very interesting. As is often the case with a RHCP joint, the bass line (🎸 Flea) is incredibly active, which is ALWAYS a win. Furthermore, the drums (πŸ₯ Chad Smith) are rad too.  The funk rock vibe continues to shine for the πŸ† Grammy-winning rock collective.  Perhaps most eyebrow raising are the unique lyrics and the performance (sing-rapping, if you will) by front man πŸŽ™ Anthony Kiedis – always a treat isn’t he? Following the silly, playful lyrics at the onset, and I quote, β€œYa, ya-ya-ya, ya-ya-ya, ya-ya-ya, ya,” Kiedis goes on to assert, β€œWell I’m an animal, something like a cannibal / I’m very flammable and partially programmable.” Hmm πŸ€”β€¦ K.  There’s also another interesting lyric, by way of β€œThe sexy art of condiments / And now I know you by your scent / Let it bleed we both get bent / Need a minute to prepare / Sonny’s side was always Cher.” 😢 All told, β€œTippa My Tongue” is definitely a quirky track, like β€œYa, ya-ya-ya, ya-ya-ya, ya-ya-ya, ya…”

10. Party Pupils & MAX, β€œBite My Tongue”

πŸ’Ώ Neon from Now On β€’ 🏷 Colour Vision / Dim Mak β€’ πŸ“… 2020β€―

Folks, prepare to groove hard! When πŸŽ™ Party Pupils and πŸŽ™ MAX 😍 are in the house, there’s no way you won’t move your body.β€― On 🎡 β€œBite My Tongue,” a$$ is kicked and names are taken. This head-nodding gem graces the 2020 project, πŸ’Ώ Neon from Now On.β€―The biggest selling points of β€œBite My Tongue” are the production, the vocals, and of course, the catchy, infectious chorus.β€― The backdrop is incredibly colorful – sleek to the nth degree.β€― This is perfect fuel for MAX’s fire, who has a silky smooth, nuanced instrument, with one of the ripest falsettos you’ll ever hear.β€― Topping things off is that hooky chorus, excerpted above, and continuing as follows: β€œNo need to complicate something good / Won’t bite my tongue until I’m holdin’ you.”  Prior to that, the pre-chorus is sweet too, setting up undeniable, indisputable pop goodness.β€―β€―

πŸ’Ώ Studying Abroad: Extended Stay β€’ 🏷 UMG Recordings, Inc. β€’ πŸ“… 2020

Masego, Studying Abroad: Extended Stay [πŸ“·: EQT Recordings / Capitol]β€œYou know I-I-I could talk my way into sacred places / I no try-y-y, just blame my snake it is the son of Satan.” Snake, huh? Wonder if Jamaican musician πŸŽ™ Masego is referencing the same animal that slithers and honestly, scares the bejeebers out of me? Or could it be his *cough* he’s referencing on 🎡 β€œSilver Tongue Devil” from his 2020 album, πŸ’Ώ Studying Abroad: Extended Stay 🀭 🀫?β€― Hmm πŸ€”, well, he does later say, β€œI put a child on you” 😏. Regardless, β€œSilver Tongue Devil” is pleasing to the ears. Jamaican dancehall artistπŸŽ™ Shenseea collaborates alongside Masego.β€―

β€―

β€œSilver Tongue Devil” has the chill, international flavor going for it.β€― The groove is sensational.β€― Even with his β€˜snake’ issues – β€œSilver tongue devil / She call me cocky man / I say my head level” – Masego delivers easy-going and relaxed vocals. Every time he plays the saxophone, it’s a total vibe.β€― God, I love those harmonized sax moments! Shenseea complements superbly on the second verse (β€œI will have you wantin’ it more / Lock down di devil inna hole”), further enforcing the sounds of the island, specifically, the dialect, and pleasure. After all, β€œMasego bring flames to me soul.” Woo!

    12. Louis Tomlinson, β€œSilver Tongues”

    πŸ’Ώ Faith in the Future β€’ 🏷 78 Productions Limited / BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited β€’ πŸ“… 2022

Louis Tomlinson, Faith in the Future [πŸ“·: 78 Productions Limited / BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited]πŸŽ™ Louis Tomlinson, the handsome, former πŸŽ™ One Direction hunk that he is, possesses πŸ’Ώ Faith in the Future. WOO! That faith, of course, arrived in 2022.  And amid that faith, on track 11, Mr. Tomlinson speaks in 🎡 β€œSilver Tongues” – can I get an amen πŸ™Œ?  Anyways, Tomlinson brings expressive, nuanced vocals to the table.  This comes as no surprise, given the fact he always possessed a sweetness to his pipes. Adding to the charm is the firm presence of his British πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ accent πŸ’ͺ

Of course, a tuneful melody, particularly during the centerpiece, the chorus, goes a long way.

β€œYou know, it’s time like these

    We’re so much happier

    Nights like these

    We’ll remember those stupid jokes

    Only we know

You know, when I’m with you

    I’m so much happier

    Nights like these

We’ll remember those songs we wrote

    Only we know

You smile at me and say, β€˜It’s time to go’

But I don’t feel like goin’ home.”

Interestingly, β€œSilver Tongues” appears to be a ballad initially. This characterization, however, changes soon enough. It transforms into this driving pop/rock song with ample energy.  There are some marvelous music cues such as the hard-hitting drums, prominence of piano 🎹, guitars 🎸, and a wall of sound. Given the fab backdrop, there are some nice instrumental moments between sections of the song.  During the bridge, there is contrast to previous sections, yet it isn’t too different – balance, if you will. All told, β€œSilver Tongues” bears strong songwriting by Tomlinson, 🎼 ✍ David Sneddon, Joseph Cross (who also πŸŽ› produces), and Theo Hutchcraft. Faith in the Future, INDEED!

    13. Hozier, β€œMoment’s Silence (Common Tongue)”

    β€œLike a heathen clung to homilyβ€―β€―

Let the reason come to the common tongue of your lovin’ meβ€―β€―

    It’s a silent night upon rosaryβ€―

Let the reason come in the common tongue of you lovin’ me.”

Hozier incorporates religious references, many of which are critical of some of the church’s viewpoints, particularly regarding sex.β€― You might say, Hozier doesn’t keep quiet!β€―

He possesses a gorgeous tone and a compelling falsetto, particularly in the pre-chorus section.β€― A surprising change of pace occurs in the chorus, where he begins singing in his lower register, in somewhat tongue πŸ‘… in cheek fashion 😝.β€―Ultimately, the chorus is part of the song that’s the crowning achievement.β€―β€―β€― β€―

Nonetheless, this πŸŽ™ Juicy J / πŸŽ™ DJ Paul produced joint is a blast to listen to.  It’s the active beat, dark synths, and of course, that simple but utterly infectious hook performed by Juicy J.

Juicy J follows up with the first verse, dropping an aggressive flow with sexed-up lyrics (β€œNever would I wear that sweater / Knowing she’d be chewing pecker”).  Chewing pecker, huh? Wow πŸ†! DJ Paul performs the second verse, matching Juicy J’s energy, asserting, β€œI’m all about them freaky hoes / That like to suck.” 🍌 WOO! That’s all fine and good, but former Three 6 Mafia member, the late great πŸŽ™ Gangsta Boo, is as unapologetic as the boys in the third verse. fire sunglassesShe goes all the way in, starting at the top as she spits, β€œI be fuckin this nigga / Straight corrupting this nigga / Pussy wet as a river / You need a boat for me, nigga.” Holy sheee-it… more like, holy fuccck! Anyways, πŸŽ™ Crunchy Black goes hard in the fourth verse (β€œOldy, freaky, hood rat type of ho / Nigga don’t you know all hoes go / Go easy / Fuckin’ cum easy”), the late πŸŽ™ Lord Infamous segues (β€œSkinny dick, she’ll stretch it / Pussy stayin’ wet, and she loves when niggas wreck it”), and the late πŸŽ™ Koopsta Knicca finishes things off, focused on all kinds of bitches (β€œSaddity bitches / Pretty bitches, freaky bitches /Them petty sneaky bitches”). It may have fallen short commercially but 🎡 β€œTongue Ring” will always be a surefire rap banger from Three 6 Mafia.
