1. Ghost, “Bite of Passage”

💿 IMPERA 🏷 Loma Vista • 🗓 2022

Ghost, IMPERA [📷: Loma Vista]To quote Hans Christian Anderson, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Sigh, that’s so true! In the case of the 🎙 Ghost song, 🎵 “Bite of Passage,” there are no words.  Basically, those words can’t fail because they’re none – it’s an instrumental track.  Furthermore, “Bite of Passage,” the penultimate record from 💿 IMPERA, runs a mere 30 seconds in length.  It’s a fabulous half-minute from the 🏆 Grammy-winning Swedish band.

Bitmoji ImageSo, what’s the significance of “Bite of Passage” within IMPERA? Well… it’s the final of three instrumental cuts that preface a notable full-length record.  In this case, “Bite” precedes the last, lengthiest, and one of the best songs of the album, 🎵 “Respite on the Spitafields.” Musically, the sounds that grace the ears are enigmatic and set in a minor key.  Even though it’s dark and unsettling to a degree, “Bite of Passage” is beautiful.  Truly, where words fail, music speaks.

2. Avril Lavigne, “Bite Me”

💿 Love Sux • 🏷 DTA / Elektra • 📅 2022

Avril Lavigne, Love Sux [📷: DTA / Elektra]After moving away from punk-pop for a spell, 37-year-old 🎙 Avril Lavigne returns to form on her seventh studio album, 💿 Love Sux (2022). Love Sux her seventh studio album, isn’t necessarily a ‘tour de force,’ but it is consistent, enjoyable, and respectable from start to finish.  One of the 🏆 Grammy-nominated Canadian musician’s best moments from Love Sux is the biting single, 🎵 “Bite Me.”

Bitmoji Image“Eh-oh, you should’ve known better, better to fuck with someone like me / Eh-oh, forever and ever you’re gonna wish I was your wifey.” On “Bite Me,” Avril Lavigne doesn’t miss a beat.  It commences with her beloved (or polarizing) whiny vocals. Like the two tracks that precede it on Love Sux, it’s assertive, melodic, and clearly, a throwback to the aughts – ah, those were the days! Most of all, “Bite Me” is incredibly catchy, including the perfectly placed f-bomb.  “Eh-oh, and we’ll be together never, so baby, you can bite me.” OH SNAP!

3. Ho99o9, “BITE MY FACE” (Ft. Corey Taylor)

💿 SKIN 🏷 DTA / Elektra • 📅 2022

“She said my knife too sharp / She said my clothes too dark / She said I fuck like a dog / She wants to rip me apart.” Holy fucking moly, 🎙 Ho99o9 (pronounced Horror, FYI)! Maybe, since 🎙 Yeti Bones asserts his girl says he “fuck like a dog” on 🎵 “BITE MY FACE,” I should say, woof, woof! “BITE MY FACE” is something else – you just have to hear this left of center rock record for yourself.  Ho99o9 enlists 🎙 Corey Taylor for the assist on this highlight from their 2022 album, 💿 SKIN.

IntenseThis biting record was penned by Yeti Bones, 🎙 🎼✍ theOGM (more on him in a moment), Taylor, and 🎼✍ 🎛 Travis Barker.  Barker also produces this intense, loud, and raw joint.  With Yeti Bones setting the one on the intro, he continues to bring mad energy to the first verse (“Visions of hate, I’m on my knees on a dirty floor / I’m begging you to bleed”). Of course, Corey Taylor keeps the intensity, well, intense on the hook as only he can!

“Take a bite, taste the sin

Bad Azithromycin

You got it, oh fuck, you got it.”

TheOGM gets into the action on the second verse, mentioning “Sex off the grid / Record it from my phone,” as well as a “Knife in my boot.” Um, okay… sure.  Again, the biting “BITE MY FACE” is a song you just must hear for yourself.

4. Doja Cat, “Won’t Bite” (Ft. Smino)

💿 Hot Pink 🏷 Kemosabe / RCA • 📅 2019

Doja Cat, Hot Pink [📷: Kemosabe / RCA]“Long ass money with a short fuse / I’m 5’3”, but I’ll make that nigga 4’2”.” Oh my! On 🎵 “Won’t Bite,” 🏆 Grammy-nominated pop artist 🎙 Doja Cat blends pop, hip-hop, and reggae.  Incredibly versatile, it’s easy to characterize Doja under the pop umbrella even though she’s adept in multiple styles.  Assisting her on this ‘biting’ joint from 💿 Hot Pink (2019) is rapper 🎙 Smino (“Keep a ghetto freak, but she lightin’ sage).

fire sunglassesThe centerpiece of “Won’t Bite” is the chorus. Shocked? Didn’t think so! The chorus is drenched in the sound of the tropics, to an exaggerated degree. Sure, it’s tongue-in-cheek but also, catchy as albeit.

“Closer to me, baby, I won’t bite

You look so tasty, but I won’t bite, really

I’m such a good kitty, don’t put up fights

But if you trick me, baby, it gon’ get sticky

I might (Might just), bite (I might just) …”

“Won’t Bite” was produced by 🎛 Kurtis McKenzie and 🎛 Yeti Beats.  They put in work, NO CAP!

5. ICE NINE KILLS, “Love Bites” (Ft. Chelsea Talmadge)

💿 The Silver Scream🏷 Fearless • 📅 2018

Ice Nine Kills, The Silver Scream [📷: Fearless]“I’m counting on beauty to kill off the beast.” Woo! 🎙 ICE NINE KILLS are a V-I-B-E.  I first got into 🎙 Spencer Charnas and company compiling various compendiums on The Musical Hype. Numerous songs from their 2018 album, 💿 The Silver Scream, have appeared on an assortment of lists.  Once more, on this biting compilation, I seek out INK, assisted by 🎙 Chelsea Talmadge on the dramatic, high-flying 🎵 “Love Bites,” the 12th track from The Silver Scream.  Part of the cinematic inspiration is the 1981 horror film, 🎦 An American Werewolf in London.

Bitmoji Image“Love Bites” commences enigmatically – fitting for an album that’s incredibly cinematic.  Besides the intriguing instrumental intro, Spencer Charnas endorses the dark themes on his intro:

“I’m tearing London limb from limb

It’s tearing me apart, but it’s us or them

So, howl at the moon, oh how can it be?

The softer the skin the sharper the teeth

Yeah!”

My, oh my! The lyrics continue to be steeped in darkness and horror, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  Charnas sings beautiful (hellish or not), serving up an intriguing first verse and an even more marvelous chorus. In the second verse, Chelsea Talmadge joins Charnas, adding more ‘bite’ (“You bit off more than you could chew / But you taste too good to be true”). ICE NINE KILLS rocks 🤘!

6. Troye Sivan, “BITE”

💿 Blue Neighbourhood • 🏷 Capitol • 📅 2015

Troye Sivan, Blue Neighbourhood [📷: Capitol]“Don’t you wanna see a man up close? / A phoenix in the fire.” 🎙 Troye Sivan delivered a gem with his debut album, 💿 Blue Neighbourhood. Blue Neighbourhood masterfully captures his experiences as a gay male coping with being different.  One of the most distinguished records is 🎵 “BITE,” which literally has a bite about it, sounding suspect. According to an interview with Pop Buzz, Sivan stated, “‘BITE’ is about my first time in a gay club.” He goes on to describe the chaotic atmosphere, asserting he “wanted to capture the chaos”: “[I was] taken aback by the sticky floor, the shirtless men, and everything else.”

Bitmoji ImageLyrically, “BITE” grows progressively sketchier.

“The rapture in the dark puts me at ease

The blind eye of the storm

Let’s go for a walk down Easy street

Where you can be reborn.”

“BITE” is a statement about losing virginity regarding a life experience. For Sivan, it marks a rite of passage in his life as a gay man –part of his sexual awakening. It parallels several first experiences.

7. Chris Brown, “Bite My Tongue”

💿 Heartbreak on a Full Moon🏷 RCA • 📅 2017

Chris Brown, Heartbreak on a Full Moon [📷: RCA]“It’s getting hard to bite my tongue / Making me feel so dumb / Can’t explain it, feel so numb…” There’s a little bit of everything on 💿 Heartbreak on a Full Moon, the 45-track (57 in an absurd expanded 💿 Cuffing Season 12 Days of Christmas edition) album released by 🎙 Chris Brown in 2017 😏.  Safe to say, when this gargantuan effort arrived, there was way too much material. Furthermore, too much Chris Brown to digest in one setting 💯!

Bitmoji ImageHonestly, the ‘biting’ 37th track, 🎵 “Bite My Tongue,” ‘falls by the wayside’ on this exhaustive project. The three-minute record features seven songwriters (including Brown), and is produced by 🎛 Daecolm Holland, 🎛 Moon Willis, and 🎛 Floyd “A1” Bentley. So, what’s the premise of the record? Basically, the 🏆 Grammy-winning R&B artist asserts he won’t bite his tongue because he wants to profess his love for her.  Fair enough – we’ll leave it at that!

“Girl, I’m not tryna kiss and run

I shoot it off like a gun

Bang, bang, I would kill for you, I live for the thrill of you

And I’ma not tryna do you wrong.”

8. Poppy, “Bite Your Teeth”

💿 I DISAGREE 🏷 Sumerian • 📅 2020

Poppy, I Disagree [📷: Sumerian]“Bite your own teeth, bite your own teeth / Don’t cry, just bite your own teeth.” Woo! 🎙 Poppy makes a bold statement with the colorful 🎵 “Bite Your Teeth”.  “Bite Your Teeth” arrives as the eighth track from her 2020 album, 💿 I DISAGREE.  Stylistically, the record is primarily metal/alternative metal.  She wrote this sub-three-minute record with 🎼✍ 🎛 Zakk Cervini, 🎼✍ 🎛 Chris Greatti, and 🎼✍ Titanic Sinclair (Cervini and Greatti also produce).

Bitmoji Image“Bite Your Teeth” commences with incredibly heavy production; it’s intense to the nth degree. Those guitars roar while mammoth drums pummel. The record is also defined by its driving rhythm and metric shifts.  Poppy is aggressive vocally but also delivers a sense of poise despite the intensity.  One of the most unexpected moments of the song is the bridge, which contrasts the heaviness that dominates most of the track. Post-bridge, “Bite Your Teeth” is wild, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! RAWR!!!

9. Party Pupils & MAX, “Bite My Tongue”

💿 Neon from Now On 🏷 Colour Vision / Dim Mak • 📅 2020

Party Pupils, Neon from Now On [📷: Colour Vision / Dim Mak]“Give myself away with every word / Won’t bite my tongue, I’ll spell it out for you.” Yeah! Spell that shit out, man! Folks, prepare to groove hard! When 🎙 Party Pupils and 🎙 MAX 😍 are in the house, there’s no way you won’t move your body.  On 🎵 “Bite My Tongue,” a$$ is kicked and names are taken. This head-nodding gem graces the 2020 project, 💿 Neon from Now On.

Bitmoji ImageThe biggest selling points of “Bite My Tongue” are the production, the vocals, and of course, the catchy, infectious chorus.  The backdrop is incredibly colorful – sleek to the nth degree.  This is perfect fuel for MAX’s fire, who has a silky smooth, nuanced instrument, with one of the ripest falsettos you’ll ever hear.  Topping things off is that hooky chorus, excerpted above, and continuing as follows: “No need to complicate something good / Won’t bite my tongue until I’m holdin’ you.”  Prior to that, the pre-chorus is sweet too, setting up undeniable, indisputable pop goodness.

10. Missy Elliott, “Beat Biters”

💿 Da Real World 🏷 Elektra • 📅 1998

Missy Elliott, Da Real World [📷: Elektra]“She’s a… uh, uh…bitch!” That old-school 🎙 Missy Elliott slaps something fierce y’all! 🎵 “Beat Biters” appears on the iconic, 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper’s 1999 album, 💿 Da Real World.  It’s the first full-length track following an intro.  Famously, Elliott is supported by a fellow icon, 🎛 Timbaland, who produces, giving the record its distinct sound (beat, synths). Even north of two decades since its release, “Beat Biters” and Da Real World sounds timeless.

“Dang, I’m very scary

Burn a whole club down like I was Carrie

Give a boy French kiss, he wanna marry

See y’all jealous tricks, y’all cannot stand me.”

fire sunglassesBesides the kick-assery of the backdrop (Timbo putting in dat wurk!), Missy Elliott is loaded and locked in.  Her flow is chocked-full of attitude and ample personality.  I love the way that she changes vocal her inflections.  Furthermore, the rhymes are the sugar honey iced tea – WOO! The generation that didn’t grow up with Missy Misdemeanor Elliott truly missed out!

“Get rowdy (Say what?)
Let me hear y’all loudly (Aha!)
Keep my high niggas ‘round me (Ooh!)
Let me see y’all work it and work it till y’all can’t stand up.”

11. Queen, “Another One Bites the Dust”

💿 The Game • 🏷 Hollywood • 📅 1980

Queen, The Game [📷: Hollywood]“Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this? / Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? / Out of the doorway, the bullets rip / To the sound of the beat, yeah.” YEAH!!! One of the best BITE songs of all time was a no. 1 hit.  That’s right! 🎙 Queen spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 with 🎵 “Another One Bites the Dust”.  The beloved gem appears as the third track on the 1980 album, 💿 The Game.  The other big-time song from The Game is 🎵 “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by the way, another no. 1 hit for the 🎙 Freddie Mercury-led collective.

classic

What makes “Another One Bites the Dust” the sugar honey iced tea? It’s the groove, first and foremost! Those drums (🎙 Roger Taylor)! The robust bass line (🎙 John Deacon)! The guitar (Deacon and of course, 🎙 Brian May)!  The music is as infectious as the lyrics.   Notably, John Deacon wrote this song. Freddie Mercury, among the most entertaining and skilled frontmen of all time, does a superb job of bringing Deacon’s lyrics to life.  The crowning achievement, of course, is the chorus, in all its infectiousness!

“Another one bites the dust

Another one bites the dust

And another one gone, and another one gone

Another one bites the dust

Hey, I’m gonna get you, too

Another one bites the dust.”
